Creative Engagement of Modern Social Science Scholarship: A Significant Component of the Islamization of Knowledge Effort
Two main currents are clearly discernible in the Islamization of Knowledge literature regarding social science scholarship and its potential for use as a possible source of knowledge in the Islamization scheme. On the one hand, we have those who would rather see the social sciences marginalized, if not completely avoided, being-to them-the defective products of manmade, secularized knowledge. On the other hand, we have those who would call for a full utilization of the social sciences in the Islamization of Knowledge effort. Although the latter do understand the shortcomings of social science theories and methodologies, and are aware of the biased ontological and epistemological assumptions upon which they are built, they would still see that there is a lot to be gained utilizing this type of scholarship. The paper describes and analyzes the-arguments normally presented by the proponents of these seemingly disparate views. The consequences (and the perils) of adopting any "pure" version of these positions are discussed. An attempt is made to forge a genuine middle ground among them. This is followed by a detailed analysis of the process of utilization of the social sciences, as an integral part of the Islamization of Knowledge effort

Inculcation of Values across the School Curriculum: Development and Validation of Teachers' Orientation Scale
Teacher orientation to the inculcation of values across school curriculum-a function of the teacher knowledge and attitudes-has been conceptualised as his or her (1) identification with the goals of the curriculum, and (2) conformity with the predetermined instructional behaviours. Based on this framework, the study explored the construct of teacher orientation to the inculcation of values across school subjects. More specifically, the study examined the likelihood of two underlying dimensions explaining the presence of variability in teacher orientation and the reliability of the dimensions. Using a 15-item instrument developed earlier for a descriptive inquiry, the present study measured and analysed responses from 103 secondary school teachers from two randomly selected schools. To arrive at the conclusions, the study applied principal component analysis and Cronbach's alpha procedures. The results suggested that teacher orientation to value inculcation is a multidimensional construct. The more reliable dimensions of Teacher Orientation were found to be goal identification, conformity to planning tasks, and conformity to delivery tasks. The results add new information to, and may serve as a guide for future research

The Need to Revive Islamic Philosophy
This paper argues that the contemporary attempts at reviving Islamic civilization will remain incomplete until a simultaneous effort is made to revive Islamic philosophy. This paper identifies the characteristics of Islamic philosophy and underscores its significance to Islamic intellectual renaissance. Islamic philosophy has a unique dimension-it encompasses science and spirituality along with reason and logic. Arguing that perhaps the decline of philosophy was an important element in the decline of Islamic civilization, the paper contends that Muslim efforts at negotiating modernity or appropriating science will not be successful without the support of a rejuvenated Islamic philosophical tradition
A Methodological Analysis of Articles Published in Malaysian Journals of Education
The purpose of the study was to survey the research techniques reported in articles published in Malaysian educational journals, and to identify the standards that are deemed acceptable by these journals for assessing the adequacy of empirical research methods used in the articles. The study also explored differences between Malaysian journals and two prominent international journals in education with respect to the standards they adhered to when documenting methodological variables. To attain these objectives, all articles published between 1991 and 1997 in selected Malaysian journals were content-analyzed and compared to those published in the highly respected international journals from 1995 onwards. For each article, variables pertinent to research design and methods, sources of data, data collection procedure, and statistical analysis were coded using a structured checklist. Results were consistent with those of other studies in that: (i) there were a substantial number of studies using qualitative techniques, and more studies were qualitative than quantitative in nature, (ii) the most commonly used inferential techniques in the Malaysian journals were the ANOVA-based procedures, and (iii) the standards for documenting methodological adequacy deemed acceptable by the Malaysian journals did not exactly reflect the state of the art
Theological Conflicts in Early Islamic Era: The Execution of Ghaylan ibn Muslim al- Dimashqi al-Qadarī
The Ghaylān ibn Muslim al-Dimashqī al-Qadarī incident represented a growing trend towards politicizing theological disputes during the early Islamic history. The belief that man is absolutely free and possesses the ability to act on his own is the central idea of his thought. Although he received the whole concept from his predecessors, he advanced the idea to new heights to such an extent that the credit of establishing and advancing the Qadariyyah School is given to him. When applied to the then political reality of the Umayyad domination, the notion of absolute human free will would have had grave implications. The relations between Ghaylān and the ruling political elite were unhealthy. Ghaylān, despite repeated warnings, refused to relinquish his beliefs or to remain quiet and hence paid dearly with his life
