The Influence of al-Makkī on al-Ghazālī

    Get PDF
This article focuses on the influence that Abū Tālib al-Makkī had on the thoughts of al Ghazālī, and particularly on his writings on mysticism. This is explained in terms of the traditions of Muslim scholars who have usually unhesitatingly drawn upon the ideas of other Muslim scholars, as well as from sources outside Islam to expound and explain the teachings of Islam. Al-Ghazālī who has written extensively on Islamic law, philosophy, logic, kalām, ethics and mysticism, has delved deeply into the thoughts of al-Makkī and has elaborated and built upon his ideas, to the extent that at places he seems to have reproduced al-Makkī in verbatim

Values, the Economy and Metaeconomics in the 2000 US Presidential Election: A Historical Perspective (1896-1996)

Conventional wisdom holds that the outcomes of U. S. Presidential elections are positively related to the state of the American economy. The eight years of the Clinton-Gore administration (1992-2000) witnessed sustained growth and employment with price stability. Given the conventional wisdom, Gore should have won with ease; but he did not. This phenomenon raises two fundamental questions: (1) Either the conventional wisdom is a myth; or (2) For a good percentage of voters, the economy was not the deciding factor in 2000. A quick review of U.S presidential elections over the last one hundred years (1896-1996) reveals that the conventional wisdom is not a myth. A detailed analysis of the Presidential election 2000 shows that for a good percentage of voters the main issue was not the economy, rather moral values and metaeconomics

    Interrogative Utterances in Surah Al-Baqarah

    Get PDF
The Qur’an is singularly distinctive in its style compared to any human composition. Human eloquence, with its remarkable history in the composition of poetry, has failed to compose even a single verse like that of the Qur'an. The Qur'anic composition is a living challenge for human beings to imitate its miraculous style. This inimitable aspect of the Qur'an, among other things, proves that it was revealed by Allah (SWT) to Prophet Muhammad (SAAS). In addition, the miracle of its linguistic composition was a means to declare the faith based on monotheism and the introduction of a new order and a theo-centric guidance that was meant to unite humanity. Adopting the monotheistic faith gave rise to a new community, the Muslim ummah that was able to bridge the differences between human beings in culture, race, colour and geographical boundaries. Consequently, the unique style of the Qur’an deserves a careful study. The present study investigates the use of interrogative utterances in surah al-Baqarah and their contribution to the Qur'an's rhetorical style. Hopefully, the results of this study will be useful in later investigations of other parts of the Qur' an..
