Think, Reflect, Refine: Shaping the Modern Lawyer

    No full text
Modern law students are entering the profession during an era when our society is fraught with many atrocities. These societal challenges come at a time when students are increasingly engaged in more social advocacy. Modern law students are also coming into legal training with skills and resources different from those of generations in the past. Additionally, almost daily, our newsfeeds are littered with headlines about the benefits, challenges, and fears of integrating generative artificial intelligence (“AI”) into our world. The legal system is not immune to this conversation. There have been discussions about how generative AI, such as ChatGPT, will impact courtrooms, client interactions, and law school classrooms. In light of these new changes, staying knowledgeable about emerging technology is and will continue to be a hallmark for new attorneys. Given the increased complexity of our social landscape, emerging technologies, and the strengths and weaknesses of modern law students, now - more than ever - it is paramount for legal education to ensure it is helping law students build and retain social, humanistic, and critical thinking skills as it shapes the modern lawyer

Immigrants are some of the most marginalized members of society. Immigrant youth, in particular, endure additional stresses due to their dual status as children and immigrants. Many fled their home country from persecution or entered the U.S. without a parent or legal guardian. By May 2024, over 120 million individuals were “forcibly displaced worldwide as a result of persecution, conflict, violence or human rights violations.” In 2022, over 152,000 unaccompanied immigrant youths crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. The United States faces several challenges in supporting these immigrant youths, and it currently fails to meet those challenges. ... This note details how the U.S. immigration system works and some available forms of immigration relief for children. This note also addresses the challenges they face due to the dangers of the immigration process, including violence, exploitation, abuse, discrimination, a lack of support in schools, and familial pressures. Lastly, this note makes recommendations for more comprehensive support

In a thirteenth-floor courtroom in downtown Dallas, Jackie Juarez took the witness stand to testify about years of mistreatment under the system that raised her. Now eighteen years old, she stood a little over four and a half feet tall, with dark curls that fell atop a long, cream-colored cardigan. She pulled By Patrick Michels the microphone close as she spoke. At eleven years old, she had been placed in the state’s custody, for reasons that remain confidential. She was removed from a group home after reporting inappropriate text messages from a male staffer—he remained employed at the facility, while Juarez was accused of causing trouble—only to be shuffled among hotels and churches and even forced to sleep in office buildings. She was what the state calls a “child without placement,” or CWOP—a cold acronym used by bureaucrats to refer to the perilous limbo on the margins of the foster care system
