Digital Transformation – The Hype and Conceptual Changes

    No full text
Digital transformation (DT) is attracting increased attention; many papers and special issues focus on various aspects of DT. Still, DT often serves solely as a repackaging of previously existing ideas. Our paper argues that the term is over-hyped and has been used to rebrand various fields to attract management attention. However, this alone cannot explain the reasons for such an immense rise in the popularity of the concept. To understand the underlying motives for current DT adoration, our paper aims to identify conceptual changes that have happened in the last decade. These changes have to be considered if companies want to strategically approach DT and use the hype to acquire the needed ‘organizational energy’ to implement the changes

Mindfulness is becoming an increasingly important component for employees in organisations, especially leaders. This article presents the qualities and effects of mindfulness in employees/leaders and argues for the need to systematically develop this quality in employees. In an empirical study, it is shown that leaders who possess the virtue of mindfulness, in addition to all their virtues, are perceived to have greater talent in organisations

Construction 4.0 – Digital Transformation of One of the Oldest Industries

    No full text
In the early 2010s, the German industry started their reform and revival under the keyword Industrie Vier Punkt Null . The European Union’s strategies adopted most of the ideas and member states followed. The European construction industry too stared to explore how to benefit from it. In this review paper, we explain the ideas behind Industry 4.0. We present aspects of Industry 4.0: what it means for the customer, business and industry as a whole. Based on that framework we analysed the potentials of Industry 4.0 in the construction industry and where – due to some specifics of the industry – construction is actually ahead in adopting the Industry 4.0 concepts

In Search of a Framework for User-Oriented Data-Driven Development of Information Systems

    No full text
Although iterative and continuous improvements are common in the design and development of contemporary information systems, some interesting research directions are arising from general trends towards user-oriented data-driven approaches. Since this is a relatively active research area, the paper aims to provide a brief overview of the main concepts and research directions and to define the setup and the context for the proposed user-oriented data-driven information systems development framework. Experts from the field of information systems are interviewed and their feedback is used to evaluate different aspects of the proposed framework

Online flash deals have emerged as one of the most popular distribution channels for hotel deals among tourists, but the literature does not yet provide a unified view of their actual usability and underlying characteristics. To gain insight into the characteristics and usage patterns of flash deals by hotels in the Mediterranean region, this study combined data from selected flash deals providers with current theories in marketing, tourism, and data analytics to identify some patterns in the use of flash deals by hotels. In the study, we show that the use of flash deals varies across hotels and suggest that flash deals are more demand-driven than supply-driven as a distribution channel for selling hotel services. The study also shows that hotels in Slovenia are reluctant to use Flash Deals

Among the measures that could reduce the pressure of aging on the sustainability of public finances is increasing women\u27s participation in the labor market. Men earn more than women in the labor market, while at the same time women perform more services in the form of unpaid household work than men. The article analyzes the differences in women\u27s and men\u27s contributions to the life-cycle surplus, i.e., the positive difference between their income and consumption. Based on the results for 14 EU countries, we find that increasing women\u27s labor force participation is an effective measure only in those countries where the gender income gap remains large even after including unpaid domestic work (e.g., the United Kingdom and Germany). On the other hand, this type of measure is less desirable in Lithuania and Slovenia, where women create more than men when unpaid work is included

Tourism is an activity that typically has an impact on the environment and its sustainable development. The starting point for this article is the findings recently published in Nature Climate Change on the effectiveness of ecolabels in changing people\u27s behaviour toward environmental friendliness. We explore whether these findings also apply in the context of tourism. Do labels that remind us to be environmentally friendly really make us change our behaviour? The results of our research show that this is not the case. The warning is simply too strong an incentive in the context of tourism. Vacations are the complete opposite of everyday life. Vacations are about pleasure and enjoyment, not about responsible behaviour for the good of humanity. Therefore, the legitimacy of generalising research findings in the context of everyday life in the context of tourism must be examined very carefully and effective mechanisms must be sought

The Influence of Socio-Demographic Characteristics on Environmental Concern and Ecologically Conscious Consumer Behaviour among Macedonian Consumers

Western Balkan countries face a decisive moment in the development of their economies, societies and the environment. According to the European Environment Agency, household consumption patterns in these countries have changed rapidly in the recent years and are of key interest due to the fact that unsustainable patterns of consumption are an important cause of environmental problems. The main purpose of this paper is to add to the body of knowledge on environmental consumer profiling, especially in the context of post-transition economies. We present the results of a survey on 323 Macedonian consumers, relating their attitudes and consumption patterns to socio-demographic characteristics

Corporate governance is a hot topic in transition economies. The purpose of this paper is to highlight some of the differences in corporate governance between the two countries and, based on the strengths and weaknesses identified, to suggest best practices that can improve the status quo. The method of analysis is a comparative case study of corporate governance. The paper draws attention to the importance of the strategic role of the board of directors and a more active role of creditors in influencing the adoption of good governance practices through the debt control function. Based on the case study, we conclude that the quality of reporting and the independence of internal audit and supervisory board committees are crucial for good governance practices, otherwise the dependence of the supervisory board on management reporting is too high

Kdo je kdo v slovenskih zdravstvenih javnih zavodih: analiza principalov in agentov

    No full text
This paper analyses an essential part of corporate governance in Slovenian public health care institutions, namely the definition of principals and contractors and their relationship to each other. The aim is to find out (a) who is the principal and who is the agent in these facilities, and (b) to what extent the activities of agents and principals are coordinated to match the operating environment of these facilities and the effectiveness of corporate governance in these facilities. The initial thesis is that the roles of principals and agents in Slovenian public health facilities are undefined and uncoordinated, which may lead to corporate governance failures in these facilities. The results presented are preliminary and are intended to serve as a basis for further research in this area
