RECLAIMING HER BODY: AN ANALYSIS OF HASIDIC EDUCATION ON MODESTY REGULATIONS AND A WOMAN’S ABILITY TO CONFORM AUTONOMOUSLY
Historically modesty practices oppress women’s sexual autonomy. This thesis focuses on Hasidic women’s access to education regarding modesty regulations. Education on the reasoning behind modesty regulations is essential for women’s ability to conform autonomously. By analyzing the education Hasidic women receive and their emotional responses to that education, an understanding of the motivations behind conforming can be gained. Women should be granted the freedom to either conform or not conform to modesty practices, but in order for them to do that there must be an increase in transparency regarding their education on modesty regulations. Critical thinking and a strong self-concept are necessary for women to be able to conform to religious communities that have a set of required norms. By increasing education on modesty regulations and promoting the development of critical thinking skills and a strong self-concept, Hasidic women can choose whether or not they wish to conform to modesty regulations set by their community
IN THE MISERY BUSINESS: FEMALE SERIAL KILLERS AS SEEN IN U.S POPULAR MEDIA
This thesis identifies stereotypes and gender issues that are all-encompassing in serial killers, more specifically female serial killers in the United States. The subsequent representation in the media through connections between psychology, criminology, and popular culture show how many female criminals and serial killers have been changed to fit the narrative of the professionals in said fields. Using the theories of Cesare Lombroso and Sigmund Freud as time markers for the period that they were written in. Using articles from feminist journals, psychological journals, and historical journals based around criminology, along with film reviews and basic background information, this thesis shows how popular culture, alongside psychology and criminology, have victimized and infantilized female serial killers by changing their stories and not providing the truth to the viewers. The timeline of this thesis starts in 1835 with Cesare Lombroso, moving forward to Freud, and ending in the early 2000s with the case of Aileen Carol Wuornos. Directors that deal with criminal-based films should always provide the truth to the viewer out of respect for the victims and their families and out of respect for the viewer themselves
[S]NIFFING [O]UT [S]PECIES: DETECTION DOGS IN CONSERVATION WORK
Biodiversity has faced severe declines since the industrial revolution, with nearly 68% of monitored species actively declining worldwide. Among methods for conservation research, Conservation Detection Dogs (CDDs) have grown in popularity since the first program began implementing them for scat detection in the 1990s. CDDs have been utilized for work including the detection of live animals, biological remnants, carcasses, plants, pathogens, poachers, and poached contraband, among a variety of applications. Their usage has assisted in the management of introduced species, monitoring of endangered species, and prevention of wildlife crime. I evaluated a set of case studies within 3 categories: introduced and pest species, endangered species, and wildlife protection, reviewed 9 CDD programs, and created illustrations in order to contribute to public awareness of CDDs and display the primary species within each study. Based on this work, I have found that CDDs make a viable method of species tracking, often operating with higher efficiency than other methods (camera traps, visual surveys, hair snares, etc). Despite higher costs, which can be mitigated through community science, CDDs serve incredibly well as a means of continued research and addressing the impacts of biodiversity loss globally
LATINX FIRST-GENERATION STUDENTS IN LOS ANGELES AND THE FIGHT FOR FOUR YEAR COLLEGE ATTAINMENT
This study explores barriers and support systems first generation Latinx students in Los Angeles face in their pursuit of higher education. Under the context of a multilayered model of college enrollment, this research study will focus on a single layer where aspects of firstgeneration students’ experiences such as self-efficacy along with knowledge about financial aid and college applications can help us understand their enrollment outcome. The data for this research will be contingent on 50-minute interviews with participants that meet the criteria. Academic preparation and achievement, financial resources, knowledge and information about college, and family support appear to be key indicators of college enrollment for prospective and non-prospective first-generation students in the study. The decisions students make have real life outcomes in being able to enroll at a four year and therefore having access to social and economic mobilization

PEDIATRIC HEAVY METAL TOXICITY: A SYSTEMATIC REVIEW OF THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN IN-UTERO EXPOSURE TO HEAVY METALS AND BEHAVIORAL/NEUROLOGICAL PROBLEMS IN THE AFFECTED CHILDREN
The rates of children diagnosed with developmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have exponentially increased over the last 20 years, which has placed a heavy burden on both caregivers and psychiatrists. The neurobiology of these disorders has been increasingly well studied, but the root causes of these disorders remain poorly understood by the neuroscience/psychiatric community. Most neuroscientists suggest a combination of genetic and environmental factors are to blame, but the question remains: why are these disorders becoming so prevalent in our society, now more than ever before? One proposed genetic-environmental factor is heavy metal toxicity. Heavy metals get into the body in numerous ways and stay there for months to years unless removed. The people who are most affected by these neurotoxins are fetuses growing in the mother’s womb. If the mother is actively plagued by heavy metal toxicity, then the mother can pass that down through the placenta and into a developing fetus’ brain, causing all sorts of changes to the brain’s connectivity patterns which can contribute to developmental and psychiatric disorders once they are born like ASD and ADHD. In this systematic review, 22 unique studies were compiled and examined to examine potential associations between heavy metal toxicity and developmental disorders by looking for a difference in heavy metal exposure between children with these disorders and control subjects. This review includes studies that measure different types of heavy metals and different sample types. All 22 of these studies found a positive correlation between certain heavy metals like mercury and lead and the development of ASD or ADHD or both
TEACHING STATISTICS THROUGH MOBILE APPLICATIONS
This thesis presents the processes and results of a student’s research and the introductory statistics educational videos that were produced as a result. The goal of this thesis was to better understand the usage of third-party media in different classrooms teaching styles, and to create functional videos to assist entry-level students in learning new statistics concepts. Research was done prior to recording, and shed light on the reality that while unnecessary in the classroom, alternative apps or media provide a novelty to the class, enhancing the learning experience for all levels of students. With a background in video production, the introductory videos are further explained in detail to be clean, personable, and relatable in material to undergraduate students. Students require short and digestible teaching methods, which has been a primary mechanism of the introductory videos uploaded onto the “Art of Stat Student” Youtube channel
Distance Learning’s Effect on Language Learning Anxiety
Distance learning recently became a hot topic in education because of the coronavirus pandemic and has now become a mainstay of education including foreign language study. This thesis will study how distance learning affects language learning anxiety with a focus on students of Mandarin language. The data within this study was acquired through a combination of an original direct survey to college level students of Mandarin, and from previous research done by recognized professionals in the field. The effects of distance learning on Mandarin studies will be explored on two levels: Interaction and Evaluation. The interaction section presents a variety of anxieties that arise from the shift in the dynamics of how students interact with their peers and their educators in a distance learning environment. The Evaluation chapter examines the positive and negative anxieties that arise from the use of technology for assessments and evaluations of Mandarin students’ performance in an online world. Distance learning affects language learning anxiety both positively and negatively in interaction and evaluation, because of both technological and psychological effects on language learning environments and communities
EFFECTS OF MULTICOLLINEARITY IN VARIABLE SELECTION ALGORITHMS
Variable selection algorithms are used to find the predictor variables that have a correlation with the response variable. Having a correlation among predictor variables is not desired, as it poses issues in separating their respective effects on the response. This phenomenon, called ”multi-collinearity”, generally implies a strong linear inter-relationship between predictors. In this thesis, we compare variable selection algorithms - Stepwise, LASSO, and Sparse Principal Component Regression - and their performance of picking the right set of predictors under various levels of multi-collinearity. We perform simulations with randomly generated datasets according to various parameters controlling the severity of multi-collinearity, the proportion of relevant predictors, and the signal to noise ratio in the response variable. We also try all algorithms using a real dataset and report the differences in their behaviors, as well as their overall performance. We also talk about methods to perform computationally demanding simulations in R and provide methods to make them faster
GENDER EQUITY AND MARINE CONSERVATION IN CORAL REEF SOCIO- ECOLOGICAL SYSTEMS: An Investigation on the Implications of Coral Reef and Marine Degradation and Gender Inequity in the Solomon Islands
Coastal communities are socio-ecological systems that often rely on coral reefs and marine ecosystems for resident livelihoods and economic services, and often these ecosystems shape various cultural attributes of communities (Lau & Ruano-Chamorro 2021). The current threatened, stressed ecological condition of coral reefs and coastal degradation threatens these socio-ecological systems, which consequently may cause inflated gender inequities (Lau & Ruano-Chamorro 2021). Social and ecological changes are inequitably distributed between men and women, where men have a higher adaptive capacity than women do in regards to system shocks (de la Torre-Castro et al. 2017; Lau et al. 2021; Cohen et al. 2016). When approaching issues of gender inequity and social exclusion exacerbated by coral reef and marine degradation in coastal communities, the trend in current literature reflects the importance of pursuing a gender transformative approach (GTA) which utilizes policies and programs to change inequitable gender norms and relations to advance gender equality (Barclay et al. 2021; Lawless et. al 2015). In this thesis, I analyze current research on the intersection of gender, coral reef degradation, and conservation and apply available analysis tools to critique intervention initiatives, using the Solomon Islands as a case study. While some policies, programs, and livelihood initiatives attempt to incorporate gender considerations and livelihood sex-disaggregated data, more deliberation at the institutional, community, and family level is necessary to ensure effective implementation so that current gender inequities are not reinforced
