GERMANIC HISTORY: SUMMARIZATION AND IMAGERY, MAKING ACADEMIC TEXTS APPROACHABLE
No full textWhen studying historical events, it is important to have the context to deepen understanding. One way to do this is through imagery, allowing readers to visualize what they read in the text. This is especially important when geographical knowledge is lacking or important territorial shifts are mentioned. To address the topic of visual aids accompanying text, we chose five time periods that were historically significant to the Germanic region and the world, past or present. We chose the 30 Years’ War, German Zollverein, German Unification, World War I, and World War II. We gathered sources for each time period, summarized them, and found and edited relevant visuals. We then looked at other works of a similar nature that used the same software and used that information to help us decide on our design choices for our web application and summaries. We then describe the technologies used to create our application, mainly ArcGIS and W3 Spaces. These allowed us to create article-style summaries and a web application allowing others to see them. Then we describe some of the web application and summaries’ features, and our justifications for implementing them. This encompasses the pages we created for the application, buttons, and menus. We then address the limitations of our work, future work, how we expect the work to be used, and some use cases. Things such as limitations of ArcGIS, summary translations, and more regional history are discussed. Examples of how different people would use the application are then discussed
GENDER BIAS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY: A STUDY OF FAVORITISM AND IMPLICIT BIAS
No full textThis thesis investigates gender-based favoritism in the music industry and its impact on social and occupational recognition. The study utilizes a stereotype content model to analyze value designations between genders, and the Favoritism Survey to assess gender preferences in musical artist ranking. Results show no significant association between favoritism for male artists and implicit bias, but suggest that men may be more likely to rank female artists lower than male artists. These findings suggest a measurable effect of gender norms and stereotypes on music industry perceptions, particularly for in-group members. Future research should investigate the limitations of the measures used and be conducted on more diverse samples
Jane Austen’s Emma A Comprehensive Guide to Teaching and Community Building
No full textIntended to be used mainly as a guide for educators, “Jane Austen’s Emma: A Comprehensive Guide to Teaching and Community Building” addresses the major aspects of Emma in order to provide readers with a stronger historical background and literary understanding of the text. The portfolio is arranged into three sections which are sandwiched between introductory and concluding sections. This formatting is intended to encourage readers to read only what they believe will be helpful for their own research. Inside, readers will find lesson plans, edited and unedited recorded club meetings, visual materials, interviews with educators, short academic essays, and notes on relevant scholarly articles and books. Through the gathering of these materials, a solid foundation for teaching Austen’s Emma can be achieved for even the least acquainted reader. From first-person experience creating and leading The Emma Club and second-person perspectives from industry professionals, it was concluded that the best ways to teach Emma center around community and require a well-paced approach that relates the text to the readers’ own society
COMMON CARP AND KOI COLORATION: FROM CULTURAL AND SCIENTIFIC PERSPECTIVES
No full textKoi fish (Cyprinus carpio L.) are a highly sought-after variant of the common carp, renowned for their unique and bold colorations. This thesis examines the significance of koi and common carp coloration from both cultural and scientific perspectives. From a cultural standpoint, the rich history and mythology surrounding the common carp in East Asia is explored through the discussion of art and literature. From a scientific standpoint, a detailed explanation of the underpinnings of coloration and pigmentation is provided by the analysis of optics, chromatophores, and pigments. Finally, this thesis proposes an experiment that combines these perspectives by studying coloration in Asagi koi through the manipulation of melanophores via magnetic fields and metal-ions to affect the blue coloration. Overall, this thesis provides a nuanced understanding of koi and common carp coloration through the holistic dissection of this multifaceted subject
Gothic Fiction and the Sister Arts: Uses of Poetry and Drawing in The Monk, Romance of the Forest, and Jane Eyre
No full textIn this thesis, I wished to research the ways in which early British Gothic literature interacts with and utilizes alternate mediums in their texts. Throughout my piece, I discuss the following works: Matthew Lewis’s The Monk, Ann Radcliffe’s Romance of the Forest, and Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre. In my first chapter, I discuss the use of intersections of poetry in the works of Matthew Lewis and Ann Radcliffe, and argue that the two represent the dichotomy of attitudes towards the Gothic and its interaction with sister arts, in that one is utilizing the poetry for the sake of developing plot structures, while the other is utilizing the pieces for developing character interaction. However, both instances further draw on the strength of the medium to adjust the pacing to force readers to slow down and acknowledge these choices. In my second chapter, I discuss the consistent reference to visual arts in Jane Eyre, and the ways Charlotte Brontë uses Jane’s art to serve as a means to manipulate pacing to heighten tension as well as points of development in line with the bildungsroman genre
CHINESE DIASPORA IN THE CARIBBEAN: A STUDY OF IMMIGRATION
No full textThis paper examines the economic, social, and cultural ties that Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago have with China, as well as how these connections have shifted over time as different waves of Chinese immigrants came to the Caribbean. This paper also analyzes China’s developments and geopolitical aspirations in the Caribbean. The paper analyzes the sociocultural history of the three nations and highlights significant events that influenced Trinidad and Tobago\u27s and Jamaica\u27s social and economic hierarchies. Although other ethnic groups that traveled to the islands from the nineteenth century to the present are only briefly mentioned, this research extensively emphasizes the relationships between Chinese indentured immigrants and previously enslaved Africans. The paper concludes that the relationship between these countries began in a complex way but since the start of the Belt and Road Initiative and the establishment of official relationships in the twentieth century, interaction has increased exponentially, benefitting Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago, and China in different ways

No full textThis thesis will provide an in-depth exploration of Hu Bo’s An Elephant Sitting Still (2018) and Edward Yang’s A Brighter Summer Day (1991) as two identified examples of effective depictions of disillusioned young people and attempts to encapsulate a portrait of a time through filmmaking. Through the examination of these two works, I will discuss what about them establishes a life-like portrayal of both disillusioned young people and a given period in ways that transcend the confines of a region and identity. I will also examine what qualities, techniques, intentions and youth characters of these two works allow them to engage with an international audience using motion pictures as the chosen art form. I will also expand on the socio-historical relevance of these works in both the past and in the contemporary. Lastly, I will use this exploration of these projects to argue the power of film as a medium in its attempt to capture moments of reality and facilitate portrayals of universal human experiences across socio-cultural boundaries
ADHD and the Neural Correlates of Emotion Perception: An fNIRS Embodiment Study
No full textAttention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition of executive dysfunction. Research has increasingly identified social impairment in some ADHD people, although the underlying cause is not clear. Socioemotional processing is mediated most directly by the perception of emotional cues from others, most notably recognizing and processing facial cues. Several studies suggest that patients with ADHD show deficits in interoceptive awareness or are less aware of their internal bodily states in addition to deficits in emotional self-awareness. Emotion perception and emotional self-awareness are empirically linked by empathy and social mirroring; these phenomena rely on embodied cognition, the use of one’s body states to represent concepts and feelings. Evidence suggests that one’s facial expression provides feedback relevant to interpreting observed emotional expressions and internal emotional experiences. The connection between facial feedback and interoceptive awareness raises the possibility that the link between embodied state and emotional perception may be disrupted in some people with ADHD. Here, I probed the relationship between facial feedback and emotional perception in people with and without significant ADHD symptomatology. Further, I used functional near-infrared spectroscopy to examine lateral frontal activation in related behavioral conditions to examine the connection between emotional perception and executive function. Subjects performed behavioral tasks in two distinct phases. In the first phase, conditions 1-3, each subject was tasked with identifying emoticon faces with various valences, including happy, sad, and neutral. In the second phase, conditions 4–7, subjects were tasked with identifying emoticon faces with the valences of happy or sad while undergoing facial manipulation to cause them to unwittingly make a happy or sad face themselves in both congruent (happy-happy and sad-sad) and incongruent (happy-sad and sad-happy) conditions. Regarding frontal activation, there were no group differences between ADHD (N = 13) and Non-ADHD (N = 8) groups, related to embodiment or congruence. While the results of this study did not show the hypothesized behavioral differences in emotional processing between ADHD and control subjects, multiple repeated measures ANOVA demonstrated strong evidence of valence( p \u3c .001***) predicting response time, regardless of congruence or ADHD status. Exploratory analyses revealed a significant increase in neural activity when embodiment was incongruent during the condition of happy vs sad in the ADHD group, but not in the Control group; but no significant difference between groups was found under the same conditions when embodiment was congruent. Suggesting that on some level the effect of facial manipulation in incongruent conditions enhanced frontal neural activity in ADHD participants, possibly due to increased cognitive costs involved with the embodied unconscious complexity. ADHD may elicit deficits in the interoception of intrinsic emotional awareness and externalizing behavioral responses; understanding the brain mechanisms that cause significant differences in how emotion interacts with cognition and the role of individual differences in mediating these interactions is crucial to developing new treatments for ADHD
“YOU’LL GO TO HELL FOR WHAT YOUR DIRTY MIND IS THINKING”: THOUGHT-ACTION FUSION WITHIN OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE DISORDER AND CHRISTIAN RELIGIOSITY
No full textThought-action fusion, specifically moral thought-action fusion, is a cognitive distortion identified within the literature on obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) that involves the evaluation of immoral, obsessional thoughts as equivalent to immoral actions. This construct, along with obsessive compulsive cognition, generally, has been evidenced to be related to Christian religiosity, as certain Christian precepts emphasize moral purity of thought. As OCD symptomatology has also been associated with depression, the current study sought to investigate how religious individuals might differ from those with OCD when it comes to thought-action fusion, and how these groups might be differently affected by this distortion when it comes to depressive symptoms. A survey assessing religiosity, obsessive beliefs, thought-action fusion, and depression was distributed online to different Reddit groups pertaining to OCD and Christianity. Results showed that religiosity did exacerbate thought-action fusion symptoms in those with OCD, while those of high religiosity showed a significantly greater presence of moral thought-action fusion than groups of lower religiosity, though they also showed a lower degree of depression. These results imply that Christian religiosity and OCD have an additive effect when it comes to the presence of thought-action fusion, and tentatively supports that those of high religiosity may be differently affected by thought-action fusion when compared to those with obsessive compulsive disorder
