TAMPA BAY TWITTER ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYTICS DASHBOARD
This paper presents a web-based Twitter analytics dashboard developed to aggregate and visually display public discourse on environmental issues in Tampa Bay, emphasizing events like red tides caused by Karenia brevis. The dashboard collects over 63,000 tweets from 30,000 accounts between 2018-2022, offering an extensive overview of public conversations and sentiments. Employing a three-tiered labeling process, we categorized user accounts into academia, government, media, tourism, and the general public. This categorization facilitates an organized presentation of Twitter activities and trends. Our use of Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms achieved a 94% accuracy rate in classifying these accounts, enhancing the dashboard\u27s capability to present data-driven insights. The dashboard serves as a powerful tool for policymakers, resource managers, and the general public, providing easy access to comprehensive statistics and trends in public discourse related to environmental events. This project demonstrates the potential of leveraging social media data for enhancing public awareness and engagement in environmental conservation efforts, aligning with the objectives of Tampa Bay\u27s Comprehensive Conservation and Management Plan
MARINE PROTECTED AREAS: A COMPARISON OF THE NATIONAL MARINE SANCTUARIES ACT AND THE ANTIQUITIES ACT THROUGH AN INTERDISCIPLINARY LENS
Marine ecosystems are under threat by anthropogenic stressors such as pollution, increased endangerment of biodiversity, and exploitation of natural resources. Through the creation of the National Marine Sanctuaries Act (1972) and the Antiquities Act (1906), numerous marine protected areas (MPAs) have been established for long-term protection of these crucial habitats. This thesis examines both forms of legislation through the use of two case studies alongside the approach of comparing the cases through a conservation versus preservation framework. The case studies helped determine different patterns and trends that resulted from each respective legislation which was then used to defend which environmental policy route may be more beneficial given specific circumstances, regarding marine zone location, size, and relation to stakeholders
SEEING EYE TO EYE: UNDERSTANDING PUBLIC ATTITUDES TOWARD THE SCIENCES
In 2020, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic ripped apart American society in irreparable ways across every aspect of life in the United States. However, this event was not unique, science has often sailed the waves of controversy throughout human history much like the controversy during the pandemic. For American society to continue to progress and advance, the majority of the public must be trusting of the scientific community. In the current study, I explored new attributes that could be related to trust in science. Specifically, I studied personality factors, a person\u27s forgiveness and intellectual humility, in the context of trust in science. A survey consisting of 70 questions was completed by 91 adults who had lived in the United States during the COVID-19 pandemic. Political orientation and religiosity were the only two variables that were found to be correlated with trust in science, suggesting either that personality factors are less likely to influence trust in science than other variables or that I did not have enough variability in my sample. Because forgiveness and intellectual humility both require openness to changes in findings and conclusions, as commonly occur in science, I propose that work with a more varied sample be conducted in future studies to investigate these attributes in relation to trust in science
The King Penguin: Growth in Writing
This thesis is composed of two sections: a collection of original short stories and poetry titled The King Penguin and a subsequent reflection on the creation of these works. The project as a whole serves as a space for an aspiring writer to execute an original literary idea and learn from the experience. The King Penguin attempts to de-automate the reading process by deviating from the traditional left-to-right structure of text, using multimedia components as a way to encourage the reader to engage with the works actively. The reflection focuses primarily on the intentions behind certain decisions made throughout the collection, with the goal of considering the creative process and growing as a writer
Chaotic Dynamics in Double Pendulums
Despite its deterministic nature, chaos arises in many systems, including double pendulums. In this paper, we will provide the background information on differential equations along with foundational tools needed to detect chaos, such as the local stability analysis of steady states, time series, phase planes, and Lyapunov exponents. Armed with these tools, we will run numerical simulations, exploring the angular displacements for both single and double pendulums, and show why single pendulums are not considered chaotic. For double pendulums, we will estimate Lyapunov exponents for a given energy level to determine when chaos occurs
What Makes This Thesis Philosophy? Exploring Examples of Systematic Discrimination at Multiple Levels of Philosophical Discourse
Philosophy, as a field, has historically struggled to include women at every level. This is problematic; as a field, philosophy must include women in order to be more applicable to more people. I look at two types of discrimination that I think are responsible for the low numbers of women in the field, being discrimination based solely on gender and discrimination based on ideas. Discrimination based on gender can be defined quite simply as discrimination experienced solely on the lines of gender, whereas discrimination based on ideas can either focus on markers of identity, leading to people with those identities being ostracized based solely on that identity, or on the basis of the ideas themselves. I draw parallels between discrimination based on ideas in philosophy during the Red Scare and in modern feminist philosophy. Both types of discrimination are observable issues with corresponding data backing up their presence in the field, and I engage with multiple theories surrounding these topics to attempt to find any possible ways forward for women in philosophy
EFFECTS OF AMERICAN COLONIALISM ON THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS
In this Thesis I will discuss the Environmental and Cultural Effects of the colonization by the United States on the Hawaiian Islands. By reviewing large industries such as the Military and Tourism industries, I examine the rules and laws set in place since the “discovery” of the Hawaiian Islands in 1778 that led to a change in the culture and lifestyle of Hawai’i. Actions such as land privatization led to massive areas of land to be developed for both military and tourism purposes which led to massive development of infrastructure and in turn, a loss of biodiversity and native life. I will end by examining some of the activist pursuits that exist in Hawai’i today to combat the colonization by the United States
IT’S ALL JUST A BUNCH OF HOCUS POCUS: REACTIONS TO ARTIFACTS FROM ONE’S OWN OR ANOTHER RELIGION
Religiosity can manifest in many ways. This thesis makes a distinction between two different ways of being religious: securely or insecurely. Are these two manifestations related to how people respond to religious artifacts of their own or another religion? Are they related to the personality traits of agreeableness, openness, and narcissism? This thesis addressed these questions by exposing Wiccans and Catholics to a religious artifact and an accompanying story about either its Wiccan or Catholic origins. Participants then completed questions about their response to the artifact, religious security, and openness, agreeableness, and narcissism. The results show that both Wiccans and Catholics reacted significantly differently to the different stories. Moreover, religious security correlated in both expected and unexpected ways with reactions to the artifacts/stories, personality traits, and with religious identification. NEW COLLEGE DOLPHINS: AUTOMATED WHISTLE EXTRACTION
Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) have been the subject of long-term research in Sarasota Bay since 1970, and are extremely vocal animals. A network of passive listening stations in the bay create potential for passive acoustic monitoring of the dolphin community, specifically with individually distinctive whistle types (signature whistles). Attempts to find whistles in large datasets have necessitated huge amounts of time to manually verify detections. An automated whistle detection method was built and tested with Kaleidoscope Pro, an acoustic analysis software. Recordings were used from two stations in Sarasota Bay: Palma Sola Bay (2018) and New College (2022). Three classifiers were tested with a subset of the New College station data, and evaluated for their hit, miss, and false alarm rates. The most accurate (an adapted classifier from the Palma Sola Bay station) was chosen for a complete analysis of the 2022 New College dataset. When the classifier was applied to the full dataset, the highest frequency of detected whistles were found in winter and spring, and in the afternoons
