WHENSITDUE: A CALENDAR MOBILE APPLICATION THAT ASSISTS STUDENTS WITH TIME MANAGEMENT
In order to help students better succeed in college, I created the calendar app called Whensitdue. The app uses Firebase Authentication and Firestore for the backend and Angular with Ionic as framework for the frontend user interface. My goal is to have a mobile application that a student can program with their individual schedule. The app sends timely reminders to students in order to help them remember due dates. In addition to the calendar, the app features links to NCF resources a student might use for their assignments, pop-up reminders, and a detailed view of the scheduled event. With more time, the app could be user tested for effectiveness
DISCOVERING THE MYSTERIOUS OCEAN: A NEW APPROACH TO IGNITING CHILDREN’S INTEREST IN MARINE SCIENCES
This thesis presents the development of a series of interactive musical books designed to ignite children\u27s interest in marine sciences. The project addresses the lack of ocean literacy and school curricula in children’s books by integrating ocean principles and the New College of Florida Marine Biology curriculum with art and hands-on activities. The books target kindergarten and early elementary-aged children as the importance of early exposure to scientific concepts and children\u27s innate scientific inquiry are discussed. Current challenges in science education are examined, highlighting the possible tools that should be utilized to enhance students’ engagement, interest, and excitement towards marine sciences. The thesis proposes that science should be presented as tangible with fun, practical experiences to potentially mitigate negative attitudes towards STEM subjects and captivate young scientists to make a positive change in the world. For this thesis, the first book\u27s design, which focuses on marine optics, is detailed, including its interactive elements and curriculum alignment. Practical applications and testing of the first books at New England Science and Sailing are described, along with the positive outcomes and improvements. Future work involves developing additional books in the series, planning for distribution and accessibility, and creating supplementary hands-on materials
