Puerto Rico’s Grand Wyndham Hotel Río Mar, the Methods They Use to Protect Leatherback Sea Turtle Nests, and My Own Findings on these Nests

    No full text
For a very long time, leatherback sea turtles have been harmed in many ways by ecological damage caused by humans, especially their nests. Despite this, it is also humans who have been trying their best to undo these wrongs by working to protect the environment around the areas they have constructed. This thesis serves as a reflection that will provide information on what leatherback sea turtles are and the many things that are harming them worldwide, as well as the information that the hotels of Puerto Rico have collected to help further the study surrounding the many effects that people have on leatherback sea turtle populations in the island. Previous research has shown that the main problem that hotels bring when it comes to turtles is tourism, bringing in garbage and waste to the beaches. Other problems include the disruption of nests and the overcrowding of the beaches, which leaves the areas in a large amount of environmental disarray. Findings on this thesis consist of photographs that give a bigger picture of what sort of points of interest were found in the beach areas, as well as maps to give a bigger idea of the surrounding location. What these maps, graphs, and pictures indicate is that while there are still many turtles that nest in these areas, there are also a number of hazards still around that disrupt the leatherback turtle spawn from reaching the ocean. This reflection is not meant to criticize the hotels as a business, since the hotel visited for this study has taken many steps to protect the ecosystem around it, but is instead meant to evaluate what sort of actions have been taken by the Hotel Wyndham can do to provide a better ecosystem for leatherback turtle nests. This can also be used to give other hotels a better perspective on how they interact with the environment and why protecting it matters

A Life in Documents: A Case Study in Building Information Literacy Skills through the Processing and Creation of a Finding Aid for the Helen Fagin Archive Collection at the Jane Bancroft Cook Library

This thesis covers the work done during the Dr. Helen Fagin Archival Internship Project while reflecting on the interaction of the project with information literacy skills, and how it can serve as an exercise in building said skills. The internship itself focuses on the processing of the personal collection donated to the Jane Bancroft Library by Dr. Fagin, with the primary goals being to complete the physical processing of the collection, thereby appraising, arranging, and preserving the collection, and endeavoring to work its amplification, raising awareness of and accessibility to the collection. A synthesis of these two objectives is embodied in the finding aid. The finding aid is crucial to both aspects, as it serves as an organizational, locative, and contextualizing document. In order to successfully create a finding aid, the collection must first be appraised and arranged; an organizational skeleton needs to be constructed. Then the collection needs to be physically processed in order for the finding aid to accurately reflect the locations of the materials. After this is completed, the finding aid can serve as a map and registry for the collection, increasing accessibility by lowering the effort barrier to efficiently find and use relevant materials. The amount and scope of work done on the project is truly reflective of the importance of the collection as a cultural and historical resource, as well as one for the application of information skill building techniques

SwellSeeker: a modern, cloud native, and lightweight surf reporting application

    No full text
Surfing is a more popular sport and pastime now than ever before, digital reports of wave and ocean conditions known as surf reports are utilized by millions every year. With the popularity of these applications amongst the global surfing community and recent trends in modern web development surrounding cloud native and serverless applications, this thesis is meant to explore the cross-section between technology and surfing and the attempt to build an inexpensive and accessible surf reporting web app named SwellSeeker. The application utilized many modern cloud services provided by Amazon Web Services (AWS), as well as several low cost API’s to source the marine and weather data needed to make the reports. The paper describes the visual and system design of the application, as well as the logic and reason behind many of the choices technology, architecture, and design that shaped the project. As well as an analysis of several modern surf reporting applications, what they provide and what they are lacking. The thesis is also meant to explore many of these popular cloud services and how their implementation and design diverge from more traditional methods utilized by software engineers. SwellSeeker is a means to show how great an effect technology in its ever evolving state can affect and benefit our personal lives and hobbies.
