Secondary Principal Leadership and the Impact on Engaging Hands-On Learning Strategies
The purpose of this narrative inquiry study was to understand how secondary campus principals build capacity in teachers to actively engage students in the processes of meaningful learning. Secondary campus principals should continuously work with teachers in a team setting in order to implement best practices (DuFour & Marzano, 2011). In recent years, “researchers in educational leadership have called for a new sustainable model for the future” and one must rethink how engagement aligns for student success (Murray & Clark, 2013, p. 291). Hands-on learning can be instrumental in increasing student engagement, which, in turn, builds student capacity (Li, Hallinger, & Ko, 2016). According to Adams, Olsen, and Ware (2017), students who do not feel challenged often become bored in the educational setting, directly contradicting the purpose of an education, which is to provide elements of inspiration that create lifelong learners. Hands-on learning strategies present in many different forms in the classroom (Arlestig & Tornsen, 2014; Batagiannis, 2011). In this narrative qualitative study, the researcher questioned and better defined how secondary principals view themselves as instructional leaders and in what capacity this perception relates to engagement throughout the school year
Survival and Dispersal of California Valley Quail Translocated to Texas
Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) populations in northeast Texas have been declining for \u3e50 years. As a result, quail hunter numbers have also declined. For remedy, landowners have historically released captive-reared bobwhites or wild translocated bobwhites with little to no success. Recently, California valley quail (Callipepla californica) have been translocated from Idaho to Texas. This is the first documented translocation of wild valley quail to Texas. The goal of this study was to evaluate survival, dispersal, and roost preferences of the translocated quail. There were 248 quail translocated in 2019 and 500 in 2020. At 6 weeks post release there was a maximum survival of 63% for VHF transmitters in 2019, 38.8% for VHF in 2020, and 58.9% for digital tags in 2020. Survival was greater in birds with digital tags (0.001 \u3c P \u3c 0.01). The median dispersal distance for birds with VHF transmitters was 633.5 m in 2019, 246.6 m in 2020, and 310.4 m for 2020 birds with digital tags. Dispersal was greater in 2019 than 2020 (P \u3c 0.001). Minimum convex polygon (MCP) area medians for VHF transmitters were 4.3 ha in 2019 and 3.1 ha in 2020. Digital tags had a median MCP of 16.1 ha. A total of 27 roost sites were documented, the majority of which were in young stands of oak trees. It is recommended that future studies use grazing, prescribed burns, or discing to increase usable habitat for translocated quail. Future studies should also consider translocations to different areas of Texas that better resemble conditions that were present in Idaho where the translocated quail originated
Deregulated Survival Pathways Confer Erythropoietin-Independent Survival and Proliferation in Erythroleukemia Progenitor Cells
Abnormal erythropoietin (Epo) signaling in erythroid precursor cells is a characteristic of Acute Erythroid Leukemia (AEL). AEL is defined by the uncontrolled proliferation of maturation-arrested erythroid precursor cells. Since Epo signaling controls normal erythropoiesis, we hypothesize that dysregulated survival pathways confer Epo-independent survival and proliferation in erythroleukemia progenitor cells. To test this hypothesis, we developed two Epo-independent cell lines, UT-7/CI1 and UT-7/CI2 from the Epo-dependent erythroid progenitor cell line UT-7/Epo. Unlike parental UT-7/Epo cells, UT-7/CI1 and UT-7/CI2 cells survived in the absence and presence of Epo. In colony forming cell assay, UT-7/CI1 and UT-7/CI2 cells formed colonies resembling Colony Forming Unit-Erythroid (CFU-E), which are immature erythroid colonies normally dependent of Epo for survival. Furthermore, heme content was similar among UT-7/Epo, UT-7/CI1, and UT-7/CI2 cells. Epo was not detected in the culture media of UT-7/CI1 and UT-7/CI2 cells at 24, 48, and 72 hours, indicating they do not produce Epo as a means of autocrine signaling. Since UT-7/CI1 and UT-7/CI2 cells do not depend on Epo for survival, the signaling pathways of the signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT) and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MEK) family, which are typically involved in Epo signaling, were investigated. Western blotting demonstrated an increase in STAT3 phosphorylation in UT-7/CI2 cells as well as an increase in p44/42 and p38 phosphorylation in UT-7/CI1 cells. The Janus Kinase (JAK) inhibitor Ruxolitinib induced apoptosis and Caspase3 cleavage in UT-7/Epo and UT-7/CI2 cells, but not UT-7/CI1 cells. However, The MEK1/2 inhibitor U0126 induced apoptosis and Caspase3 cleavage in UT-7/CI1 cells. Overall, the results from this study indicate that UT-7/CI1 cells are dependent on abnormal MEK1/2 signaling for Epo-independent survival whereas UT-7/CI2 cells are dependent on abnormal JAK signaling

This interview focuses on Richard Huie\u27s memories of local businesses in Delta County, Texas and his term as mayor of Cooper, Texas.
Richard Huie was born to Gordon and Ida Gunter Huie in 1946. He shares his memories of downtown Cooper, Texas and the local businesses in the area. He also recalls his memories of the first Black owned businesses in the area.
Huie served as mayor of Cooper for eight consecutive years starting in 1985. He shared the city\u27s accomplishments during that time, including the construction of Cooper Lake and Big Creek Lake, the demolition of dilapidated buildings, and the construction of a new water treatment plant. Factors Within the Experiential Growth Group Contributing to Cacrep-Students\u27 Perceived Importance of Group Work and Perceived Confidence in Group Skills
The purpose of this study was to explore factors within Experiential Growth Groups (EGG) in the group counseling course that influence counselors-in-training (CIT) perceptions on the importance of group counseling and CIT confidence in delivering group work skills. The study examined three factors within EGG: pre-group skills training, participation level, and perception of the group leader as measured by the Group Psychotherapy Intervention Rating Scale (GPIRS). A sample of 61 CIT were recruited via emailed invitations to counseling programs accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP, 2016). Participants answered a survey with demographic questions, the GPIRS, and Core Group Work Skills Inventory–Importance and Confidence (CGWSI-IC). The researcher utilized the CGWSI-IC to examine criterion variables and conducted a multiple regression analysis for each, importance and confidence. The results revealed that neither multiple v regression analyses found a statistically significant result and this was likely the result of a type II error. Values-Based Conflict Inventory: Development & Validation
Counselors and clients alike have values that guide their daily decision-making. When counselors’ values differ from their clients, they may experience internal conflict or dissonance. This conflict can interfere with the therapeutic relationship thereby reducing positive outcomes. To this point, there are no instruments that measure this experience. In this study, the Values-Based Conflict Inventory was created and content validity established using a mixed-methods approach with subject matter experts (N = 5). A pilot study (N = 21) was conducted wherein participants took the Values-Based Conflict Inventory. Descriptive statistics were then analyzed
The Relationship of instructional Technology to Minority Student Successful Course Completion at a Regional University in the Rural Southwest
This study was designed to examine whether instructional technology use in the face-toface classroom supported minority student course completion in higher education. The use of instructional technology in the classroom by faculty and students can provide enhanced instruction to support increased critical thinking and a student-centered learning environment for minority students in higher education. The group identified as minority students for this study included Native Americans, African Americans, and Latino/Hispanic. An Investigation to Determine the Relationship Between Reading Achievement and Physical Fitness
This quantitative, correlational study utilized a non-experimental design in order to determine the relationship between physical fitness and academic achievement for 208 fourth and fifth grade students. FitnessGram® and ISIP data were provided to the researcher and analyzed in order to determine the relationship, if any, between tested components of FitnessGram® (one-mile run which measures aerobic capacity, body mass index (BMI) which measures body composition, push-up which measures upper body strength and endurance, curlup which measures abdominal strength and endurance, trunk lift which measures back strength and flexibility, and back-saver sit and reach (BSSR) which measures hamstring flexibility) and components of ISIP (overall reading, word analysis, text fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension) for fourth grade students, fifth grade students, and any gender-specific relationships among each grade level. Data were input into the statistical software program, Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Data were analyzed using both descriptive statistics and a Pearson’s r correlation. Correlation matrices were produced in order to determine relationships among reading components from ISIP data and fitness components from v FitnessGram®. Fourth grade data for both genders showed significant relationships between aerobic capacity as assessed by the one-mile run and the overall reading scores (r=-.236, p\u3c.05), word analysis (r=-.207, p\u3c.05), and vocabulary (r=-.210, p\u3c.05), between body composition as assessed by Body Mass Index (BMI) and word analysis (r=-.253, p\u3c.05), and between hamstring flexibility assessed by the back-saver sit and reach left and right and vocabulary (r=-.210, p\u3c.05). For fourth grade boys, significant relationships were found between overall reading score and aerobic capacity as measured by the one-mile run (r=-.294, p\u3c.05), between text fluency as measured by the fluency component of ISIP and aerobic capacity as measured by the one-mile run (r=-.311, p\u3c.05), between word analysis and BMI (r=-.298, p\u3c.05), and between vocabulary and both aerobic capacity as measured by the one-mile run (r=-.305, p\u3c.05) and the back-saver-sit and reach (r=-.288, p\u3c.05). No significant relationships were found for girls in the fourth grade. Fifth grade data for both genders showed only one significant relationship between abdominal strength and endurance as tested by the curl-up and comprehension (r=-.233, p\u3c.05) at p\u3c0.05 level. For fifth grade girls, there was a relationship between vocabulary knowledge as tested by the vocabulary component of ISIP and abdominal strength and endurance as measured by the push-up (r=-.286, p\u3c.05), and a relationship between comprehension as measured by the comprehension component of ISIP and abdominal strength and endurance as measured by the curl-up (r=-.385, p\u3c.01). No other significant relationships were found for fifth grade. The findings from this study have significant implications for physical fitness, academic achievement, and benefits for the whole child within educational policies
Autonomous Vehicle Communication in V2X Network with LoRa Protocol
In the Vehicle-to-Vehicle or Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2X), the communication stability is one of important concerns to improve safety of automatic vehicle. The weakness of Wi-Fi is short range and Long Term Evolution (LTE) is possible to lose connection or uncover in certain area. In this research, we proposed to take advantage of Long-Range (LoRa) protocol and Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) and focusing on gateway selection in order to improve the overall communication performance in the V2X system and data transmission [1]. The performance of communication can be enhanced by wide cover signals of LoRa and improved by our developed mechanism, YORA, for gateway selection and elimination in the LoRaWAN server. By obtaining the segmentation images from the map through trained deep learning model and then weighting the segmentation, connection possibility between vehicles and gateways can be calculated. In the research, we developed a 93% accuracy model to generate the map segments. Meanwhile, transmission latency between vehicles and infrastructures also can be reduced by minimizing the messages\u27 payload content. As a result, we can utilize the resources better by using minimum number of LoRa gateways and maintaining highly possible stable connection
