Towards Collaborative and Intelligent Learning Environments Based on Eye Tracking Data and Learning Analytics: A Survey
No full textThe current pandemic has significantly impacted educational practices, modifying many aspects of how and when we learn. In particular, remote learning and the use of digital platforms have greatly increased in importance. Online teaching and e-learning provide many benefits for information retention and schedule flexibility in our on-demand world while breaking down barriers caused by geographic location, physical facilities, transportation issues, or physical impediments. However, educators and researchers have noticed that students face a learning and performance decline as a result of this sudden shift to online teaching and e-learning from classrooms around the world. In this paper, we focus on reviewing eye-tracking techniques and systems, data collection and management methods, datasets, and multi-modal learning data analytics for promoting pervasive and proactive learning in educational environments. We then describe and discuss the crucial challenges and open issues of current learning environments and data learning methods. The review and discussion show the potential of transforming traditional ways of teaching and learning in the classroom, and the feasibility of adaptively driving learning processes using eye-tracking, data science, multimodal learning analytics, and artificial intelligence. These findings call for further attention and research on collaborative and intelligent learning systems, plug-and-play devices and software modules, data science, and learning analytics methods for promoting the evolution of face-to-face learning and e-learning environments and enhancing student collaboration, engagement, and success

No full textThis is a video recording of an oral history interview with Gaylon Maddox. It was conducted January 31, 2020. The interviewer is Louise Skinner. The videographer is Sandy Bond.
This interview focuses on Gaylon Maddox\u27s memories of growing up in Delta County, Texas and his career as a registered nurse.
Madox was born to Tommie Calvin and Clarice Pendergrass Maddox on September 25, 1955. His early memories include watching the Christmas parade from Adair’s Grocery on the Cooper Square, going to the Enloe Baptist Church and attending Cooper schools. He recalls the name of friends, teachers, and community members and his memories of them.
After highschool, Maddox attended the Paris Junior College in order to become a registered nurse. He furthered his education at UT-Arlington with bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Maddox worked as a RN for forty-three years.
In addition to a career as a nurse, Maddox is also a musician. He became interested in playing the piano at a young age and has played for the Sunlight Quartet and the Stamps Quartet.https://lair.etamu.edu/scua-oral-history-all/1047/thumbnail.jp

The interview focuses on Marion Miller’s memories of growing up in Delta County, Texas, his career as a pharmacist and the history of the pharmaceutical business.
Marion Miller was born to Manton and Malverne Baker Miller on January 15, 1941. Miller began working at his father’s pharmacy, Miller’s Pharmacy, as a young boy. He and his siblings helped deliver orders and serve Saturday night crowds who came to visit the soda fountain. Miller shares his memories of Mabel Wheat, a milkshake maker who worked at the pharmacy for sixty years. He also recalls a visit from Duane Allen of the Oak Ridge Boys.
In 1969 he married Ann Ray Miller. He attended pharmacy school at the University of Texas where he graduated in 1974. In 1984, Miller bought the pharmacy from his father. He operated Miller’s pharmacy until 2007. Throughout the interview, Miller discusses the history of pharmaceuticals, including changes in drug regulations, insurance, and commercial manufacturing of drugs.https://lair.etamu.edu/scua-oral-history-all/1065/thumbnail.jp
Rumen and Serum Metabolomes in Response to Endophyte-Infected Tall Fescue Seed and Isoflavone Supplementation in Beef Steers
No full textFescue toxicosis impacts beef cattle production via reductions in weight gain and muscle development. Isoflavone supplementation has displayed potential for mitigating these e ects. The objective of the current study was to evaluate isoflavone supplementation with fescue seed consumption on rumen and serum metabolomes. Angus steers (n = 36) were allocated randomly in a 2 2factorial arrangement of treatments including endophyte-infected (E+) or endophyte-free (E ) tall fescue seed, with (P+) or without (P ) isoflavones. Steers were provided a basal diet with fescue seed for 21 days, while isoflavones were orally administered daily. Following the trial, blood and rumen fluid were collected for metabolite analysis. Metabolites were extracted and then analyzed by UPLC-MS.The MAVEN program was implemented t oidentify metabolites for MetaboAnalyst 4.0 and SAS 9.4 statistical analysis. Seven differentially abundant metabolites were identified in serum by isoflavone treatment, and eleven metabolites in the rumen due to seed type (p \u3c 0.05). Pathways a ected by treatments were related to amino acid and nucleic acid metabolism in both rumen fluid and serum (p \u3c 0.05). Therefore, metabolism was altered by fescue seed in the rumen; however, isoflavones altered metabolism systemically to potentially mitigate detrimental e ects of seed and improve animal performance
Interrelationship Between Homeless and Non-Homeless Veterans: Predicting Housing Needs and Support
No full textVeterans are twice as likely as other Americans to become chronically homeless (U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, 2015). When leaving for the military, most individuals departing have a place they call home. Upon the soldier’s return, that place once considered home and a safe place may no longer exist. When most veterans return home, they have to find position not only within the family structure, but also in society. This transition to and from home as a safe place is a contributing factor in veteran homelessness. Minimal research has been conducted or piloted to examine the factors in transitions between multiple war eras. This research sought to do three things: explore the factors from various eras that may have contributed to veteran homelessness, create prediction tools that may help prevent or decrease homelessness, and provide cultural competency and educational tools for clinicians and community organizations that serve the veteran population along with their family members
Hegemony, Terror, Death and Disappearances: U.S. Foreign Policy in Argentina, 1976-1981
No full textThis thesis will present a diplomatic and political history of the United States\u27 engagement with the Argentinean junta between the Coup of 1976 and 1981. It demonstrates how Operation Condor revealed strife and competition between U.S. agencies such as the Central Intelligence Agency and the State Department highlighting shifts in foreign policy during the Carter Administration. Additionally, this strife reveals that the State Department and CIA were forced to contend with a government which often ignored U.S. requests and became a liability. In order to accomplish this task, the thesis will utilize recently declassified State Department documents, CIA reports and memos, as well as documents retrieved by American agents or provided by allied governments such as Argentinean communications with other Condor participants. The documents presented in the thesis were recently declassified in 2017 and 2019, and as a result, have not yet been used in academic articles and narratives of the Cold War. Additionally, reports from human rights organizations, legal documents, and other governmental records will be utilized to collaborate trends in political violence noted in the recently declassified documentation presented in the thesis. While previous narratives have outlined various aspects of Operation Condor, this thesis seeks to use previously classified documents to present conflicting patterns in U.S. foreign policy during the Carter Administration and the impact of events in Argentina on the Carter Administration\u27 s strategies. This resulted in the creation of an apparatus that the United States\u27 government could not control, creating a system of state-sponsored terrorism which became a liability to U.S. security interests.Keywords: Argentina, CIA, Junta, Coup, Foreign Policy, United States, Operation Condor, State-Sponsored Terrorism, Disappearance
Rural School Counselor Professional Learning Community: Perceptions and Perceived Impact on Professional Identity
No full textThis study addressed the lack of professional development and networking opportunities targeted towards school counselors in rural school districts. To address this problem, this study explored the perceptions and lived experiences of professional school counselors, in rural settings, and their participation in a professional learning community (PLC). To gather data, interviews were conducted with practicing and retired members of a rural school counselor PLC. Data were gathered via semi-structured interviews and were recorded and open coded to discover common themes. Ten rural school counselors were included in this study. Findings indicated that participation in a PLC for rural school counselors had considerable influences on the participants’ professional knowledge and growth and a positive impact on the school counseling program. Identification of these themes was useful for understanding a means to increase advocacy for professional development and networking opportunities for school counselors within rural districts. How Sole Rural Elementary Principals Use Distributed Leadership Practices to Build Capacity of Teacher Leaders: An Interpretive Qualitative Study
No full textThe purpose of this interpretive qualitative study was to explore how sole rural elementary principals use distributed leadership practices to identify and develop teacher leaders to benefit students in Northeast Texas schools. The researcher collected interview data to explore and analyze codes and categories to identify emergent trends or patterns. Six themes, with sub-themes, emerged from the data as a result of the analysis process. These themes are the need for teacher leaders by sole rural principals, the use of distributed leadership practices by sole rural principals, characteristics of teacher leaders determined by sole rural principals and by teacher leaders, techniques for capacity building of teacher leaders by sole rural principals, and potential barriers that reduce or impeded opportunities to distribute leadership tasks. The findings and implications for practice from this study can aid sole principals as they identify and develop teacher leaders to help with instructional activities in rural elementary schools. Recommendations include conducting a cross-sectional, quantitative survey design study to determine a definition for what a rural elementary school requires in a teacher leader and to conduct the original study face-to-face with more rural elementary principals and teacher leaders to determine if the same themes and findings would be similar to this study, or if the numbers and the procedures in the new study would make a significant difference. Principals’ Perceptions of a District-Developed Grow-Your-Own Principal Preparation Program: A Q Methodology Study
No full textPlanning for principal succession has become necessary for school districts to improve and sustain student academic success. As a result, some school districts prepare for principal succession by building capacity through acquired experiences and increased leadership competency in potential principal candidates using the “grow your own” philosophy through principal preparation academies. The purpose of this research is to contribute to the body of literature on district-developed grow-your-own principal preparation programs. The researcher designed this Q methodology study to examine the effectiveness of one suburban North Texas school district’s Grow Your Own Principal Preparation Institute in the area of increased competence through the five Texas Principal Standards: (1) instructional leadership, (2) human capital, (3) executive leadership, (4) school culture, and (5) strategic operations. Q methodology encompasses qualitative techniques to investigate principal perceptions by gathering concourse statements, composing a Q sample, and using quantitative techniques to allow the researcher to subjectivity. Between Discord and Progress: Suffrage Periodicals and the Woman’s Rights Movement, 1869-1890
No full textThe late 1800s marked a period of great social and political upheaval for the United States, and within this context, the Woman’s Rights Movement emerged as women began campaigning for increased social and political rights. Aided by technological advancements and emerging New Woman ideals, the moment in history proved ripe for their historical campaign. This project will argue that, despite conflicts among leadership, the suffrage periodicals sustained the Woman’s Rights Movement during their period of discord by continually evolving public consciousness and forming a new, collective identity among supporters. I will examine how three particular periodicals, the Woman’s Journal, the Woman’s Tribune, and the Woman’s Standard focused on education, legal reform, and racial tensions, respectively, to progress the precarious movement. Though divergent in individual ideals and editorial practices, suffrage periodicals loosened entrenched gender norms and paved the way towards national progress despite constant disagreement
