A Comparison of Chinese Relations with Argentina and Peru
China has rapidly and tremendously expanded its engagement in the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) region in the 21st century, and many scholars have developed distinct literature to explain this phenomenon. In this research, dependency theory was utilized to examine and identify the nature of Chinese relations with Argentina and Peru. After conducting an empirical test, the researcher concluded that both Argentina and Peru have developed center-periphery dependent relationships with China in spite of their different population structures, resource endowments, economical scales and structures, and economic policies. Furthermore, this dependent relationship has generated both positive and negative impacts on Argentina and Peru, which implies that LAC nations should maximize the benefits of their relations with China and avoid risks, such as social inequity and environmental issues in Peru and weakening institutions in Argentina
Predicting Financial Recession using Machine Learning
Financial decision plays an important role in the society and therefore, a crash in the market or a major economic recession can lead to social anxiety. Many statistical models have been developed to forecast the financial recession but there is always human input required which leads to human judgement and can eventually lead to wrong results. More recently, machine learning algorithms are built to predict the crisis of asset classes like currency and stocks. In this study, we take these models to one step further and try to predict the financial recession using machine learning classification algorithms for next six-months period. To ensure financial stability in the economy, policy makers using this model can intervene and adjust the monetary policy. Moreover, asset managers / investors can adjust their portfolio by increasing allocation in less risky assets (like cash and government bonds) and decreasing allocation in more risky assets (like stocks) if the crisis is imminent
The Impact of Two Interventions on the Physics Identities and Figured Worlds of High School Physics Students
Over the years, women have been increasingly earning bachelor’s degrees to the point that around 55% of bachelor’s degrees in all fields are awarded to women. However, in certain STEM fields like physics and engineering, the number of bachelor’s degrees awarded to women sharply drops to around 20%, without ever breaching 25% in the past thirty-five years. Due to the consistent underrepresentation of women in physics-related fields, the STEP UP project seeks to reverse this course through the use of research-based interventions in high school.This project uses the data from a study conducted in Fall 2018 where high school physics teachers were given two interventions for use in the classroom: Careers in Physics and Women in Physics, which involve activities designed to educate students on the topics in question. After the interventions, the teachers send the materials back to the STEP UP program, including surveys and essays completed by the students. We sought to use the survey and essay results from both interventions to perform analysis, looking for the answers to the following questions: how the Women in Physics lesson affects figured worlds, how specific career interests affect physics identities, and if prior career interests predict identity shifts. The analysis utilized descriptive statistics, regressions, and constant comparison for that purpose. With the answers to these questions, we looked to understand what makes the interventions effective, who is more impacted, and where improvements can be made in order to assist in the goal of increasing the representation of women in physics. The study determined the interventions are effective at both shifting figured worlds and increasing physics identity. In particular, the Women in Physics intervention is more effective for women than men, while there is no statistically significant difference between genders for physics identity, but the medical career was determined to have a positive correlation with greater identity shift. Overall, some improvements can be made to the surveys and retrieval of materials in order to increase sample size to make the study more representative of the student population
Exploring Bilingual School Counselor Burnout in Rural Districts: A Phenomenological Study
The purpose of the current study was to explore the lived experiences of bilingual school counselor burnout in rural districts within the United States. Research questions guiding this phenomenological analysis includes: What are the lived experiences of Bilingual School Counselors struggling with burnout? Two sub-questions are, How do bilingual school counselors manage stress and burnout due to workplace demands? How does performing non-counseling duties impact the role of Bilingual School Counselors?Participants included state certified school counselors, who currently provide bilingual services, in predominantly Spanish-speaking populated school districts in rural or suburban (other central city) areas with limited administrative support or professional training. Variables indicated previously through literature as contributing to burnout included: higher case management, increased non-counseling duties, and proximity to counselor depersonalization. Implications for additional training and development of the bilingual school counselor for future research are provided. Establishing a foundational program and training, including self-care and supportive regional sources, at the graduate level can be used to support the burnout and insecurity experienced. Further investigation of the needs of school counselors interested in the bilingual track is necessary to further support these findings

Rachel Rollings Memorial Garden Plaque

Rachel\u27s Garden is dedicated in loving memory of Rachel Erin Rollings, a student at Texas A&M University-Commerce who was killed in an automobile accident on August 6, 2006. Rachel, aged 22, was a member of the Sigma Zeta Chapter of the Chi Omega Fraternity, where she served as New Member Educator and was a Resident Assistant for the house. Rachel was a lifeguard at the Ja-Lu Municipal Swimming Pool in Greenville and the Morris Recreation Center. The memorial is also in memory of Britney Lipsey, who was killed as a result of the same automobile accident. Britney, aged 20, was head lifeguard at the Ja-Lu Municipal Swimming Pool in Greenville and gave swimming lessons at the Morris Recreation Center. The bronze sculpture of a lioness leading and teaching her cubs is in honor of Rachel\u27s goal to become a teacher. Solvent Effect to the Uniformity of Surfactant-Free Salmon-DNA Thin Films
Fabrication of surfactant-modified DNA thin films with high uniformity, specifically DNA–CTMA, has been well considered via drop-casting and spin-coating techniques. However, the fabrication of thin films with pure DNA has not been sufficiently studied. We characterize the uniformity of thin films from aqueous salmon DNA solutions mixed with ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, and acetone. Measurements of thickness and macroscopic uniformity are made via a focused-beam ellipsometer. We discuss important parameters for optimum uniformity and note what the effects of solvent modifications are. We find that methanol- and ethanol-added solutions provide optimal fabrication methods, which more consistently produce high degrees of uniformity with film thickness ranging from 20 to 200 nm adjusted by DNA concentration and the physical parameters of spin-coating methods
Neutron stars in f(R,Lm) gravity with realistic equations of state: joint-constrains with GW170817, massive pulsars, and the PSR J0030+0451 mass-radius from NICER data
In this work, we investigate neutron stars (NS) in f(R,Lm) theory of gravity for the case f(R,Lm) = R +Lm +σRLm, where R is the Ricci scalar and Lm the Lagrangian matter density. In the termσRLm,σ represents the coupling between the gravitational and particles fields. For the first time the hydrostatic equilibrium equations in the theory are solved considering realistic equations of state and NS masses and radii obtained are subject to joint constrains from massivepulsars,thegravitationalwaveeventGW170817and from the PSR J0030+0451 mass-radius from NASA’s Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) data. We show that in this theory of gravity, the mass-radius results can accommodate massive pulsars, while the general theory of relativity can hardly do it. The theory also can explain the observed NS within the radius region constrained by the GW170817 and PSR J0030+0451 observations for masses around 1.4 M
