Stigma in Police Officers with PTSD Receiving Mental Health Services
Stigma is a mark of disgrace that can worsen someone\u27s mental health problems, and delay recovery or impede them from receiving help and treatment. Stigma is often caused by a lack of knowledge that leads to discrimination and /or unintentional avoidance of a particular person. There are many people who have Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and also experience stigma because others assume the individual is either violent or dangerous. In law enforcement, PTSD tends to manifest overtime from witnessing severe or tragic events on the job. Officers also deal with the stigma associated with accepting their diagnosis and taking that next step for treatment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate public stigma for law enforcement officers who experience PTSD while on the force. The participants that volunteered to participate in this study completed the following measure: TEQ, LOF, PTSD Knowledge Scale, and PTSD Symptoms Scale. Once the participants completed these measures, they were randomly assigned to a vignette that was either a police officer with PTSD or stress then completed AQ-27 and Beliefs about risk for violence, substance misuse, and mental disorder. Once participants finished this data we collected the data and ran linear regression analyses toiv assess predictions of public stigma within the domains of empathy, familiarity, PTSD knowledge, and PTSD symptoms. The results showed that Black and Latinx reported higher public stigma for police with PTSD than whites. This was also the case with Black and Latinx participants when looking at coercion, blame, help and avoidance. The results between gender did not show any significant effect for gender. Finally, empathy, familiarity with police officers, and PTSD knowledge was also looked at. Empathy results showed individuals has lower stigma while familiarity did not predict that. PTSD was also not a predictor to reduce stigma. This could have due to low PTSD knowledge within the sample as well as having known of a police officer with PTSD
A Nation at Stake: A Case Study to Explore How Principals Use the Virginia Department of Education’s Evaluation Framework to Build Teacher Capacity Within K-12 Virginia Public Schools
This study explored how principals use evaluation frameworks to build teacher capacities in Virginia Public K-12 schools in order to decrease teacher turnover rates. The researcher’s choice of methodology to complete this study was a qualitative case study. The qualitative case study is suitable for addressing the immediate phenomena of the national teacher shortage. The researcher completed the process of the study by collecting data through interviews to collect qualitative information to study a phenomena. Seventeen participant educators partook in the study. Each interview consisted of fifty-four questions (Appendix A) that were conducted in virtual communication platform. The finding of the results were revealed at the conclusion of the study. It was anticipated that the research findings would contribute greatly to the dialogue of principal and teacher relationships and perceptions as they pertain to said relationships influencing the rate of teacher retention
Early Network Attack Identification
Early attack identification is critical to secure the network exposed to various cyber-attack risks in modern times. Anomaly detection is also an important task, but devising a relevant strategy against the malicious event may be limited due to lacking attack information. For early attack identification, the main challenges are (1) imbalanced class data, (2) limited availability network datasets for early identification, and (3) determining variables to improve performance. To deal with these challenges, this research will explore early-identification of attacks with the following two angles: (1) Deep learning models including ANN, RNN; (2) Data augmentation for balanced data. Based on the analysis of the result of the experiments, this study will develop a deep learning model for early attack identification for validation purposes
Voices from the Alternative Campus: Students Speak
The purpose of this qualitative ethnographic study was to hear the voices of students in a local district alternative education placement (DAEP) school and to use their impressions to increase student success in that program. I also provided background information and examined the setting, circumstances, and culture in which the participants were involved. I collected data that consisted of teacher reflection journals, student and teacher observations, student focus groups, as well as small group and individual interviews with 6 students in the program. The findings showed that students perceived the classroom as a challenging place to learn. Students discussed their choices and the outcomes of their behaviors that caused them to be placed in the DAEP program and their impressions of their teachers’ interactions with them. The study added to the research by providing a triangulation of three components—student voices, staff member observation, and teacher–researcher interactions—of the daily lives of DAEP students. Keywords: district educational alternative campu
The Impact of Religiosity, Ethnicity, and Age on the Parenting Styles of Females in an Intercultural Marriage
The purpose of this dissertation was to provide counselors with awareness and knowledge about the impact of religiosity, ethnicity, and age on the parenting styles of women in an intercultural marriage. The researcher conducted a multiple regression analysis on the impact of religiosity, ethnicity, and age of women in an intercultural marriage. The study utilized 115 women and indicated no statistical significance between the variables. Keywords: parenting styles, women in intercultural marriages, religion, spiritualit
The Effect of Race and Crime Type on Eyewitness Identification
Many wrongful convictions are based on mistaken eyewitness identifications. This thesis featured the effect that crime and race stereotypes have on eyewitness identification. Research suggests that “memory of a perpetrator’s appearance will be affected by the type of crime that occurred” (Eberhardt, Dasgupta, & Banaszynski, 2003). The goal of this study was to further examine who eyewitnesses identify as a perpetrator based on the type of crime as well as the perpetrator’s race. Across several experimental blocks, participants read a vignette describing a stereotypically “Black,” “White,” or Neutral crime, and there was either a Black or White face on the screen under the vignette. After a brief distractor task in each block, a lineup was presented that either contained the target face that was with the vignette shown in the same block(i.e., target-present lineup), or a filler “innocent suspect” (i.e., target-absent lineup). All members of the lineup shared all demographic characteristics with the target or filler, including race. The participants were asked to select the target from a lineup or reject it if it did not contain the target, and then provide their confidence in their response. Results showed that after reading a neutral and Black vignette participants identified and chose Black targets at a significantly higher rate compared to White targets. Additional results partially supported my hypothesis that Black targets would be chosen more when there is an activation of a Black stereotype. The interaction was marginal and it was driven by Neutral and Black vignettes boosting choosing rate for Black targets, whereas the White vignette eliminated this bias. Black suspects had a higher rate of misidentification in target absent lineups compared to White suspects, and participants were more confident in choosing Black targets. The results of the current study apply to eyewitness identification and are particularly relevant for the criminal justice system, which evaluates the reliability of eyewitness identification
