    Reading Achievement of Third-grade English Learners and Low-Socioeconomic Students in Title I and Non-title I Schools

    The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine whether school type (Title I versus non-Title I), English learner (EL) student percentage, and low-socioeconomic status (low-SES) student percentage could statistically predict the percentage of third-grade students who perform at the Meets Grade Level (MGL) performance on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) Reading exam in the 2018–2019 school year on the campus level. This quantitative study used a multiple linear regression model to examine the predictive relationship between these variables. Multiple linear regression was used to determine whether these three predictor variables had a statistically significant predictive relationship with the third-grade STAAR Reading MGL percentage of the campus. Additionally, correlation tests were another statistical method used. The correlations were used to measure the strength of the linear relationship between each of the independent variables and the dependent variable. The data used in this study were derived from a requested Texas Education Agency (TEA) report and the TEA public website. The sample size was calculated through statistical power analysis using G*Power analysis and other recommendations. Campuses were identified using stratified sampling and the findings from this study provide a better understanding as to whether school type, EL percentage, and low-SES percentage in third grade can predict the student MGL performance on the STAAR Reading exam of third-grade students on a campus. The results of this study may start a conversation about the possibility of socioeconomic and EL integration in Texas public schools. Socioeconomic and EL integration refers to low-SES students and ELs being combined with non-ELs and higher SES students in a higher-average SES school. Another implication of this study suggests that the use of culturally responsive teaching is a pedagogy that academically supports ELs and low-SES students, as well as other minorities and students of color. Further, the findings illuminate how the leadership role of the administrator can help them improve student achievement. Stakeholders can utilize these findings and implications for immediate insight and decision-making to support an equitable education for EL and low-SES students

    Gay Men and Lesbians in the United States Military

    Within the last 20 twenty years society has experienced several changes concerning the acceptance of gay men and lesbians. This study aims to identify whether or not the changes in societal acceptance of gay men and lesbians is reflected within the United States Military With legalization of same-sex marriage and increasing acceptance of same-sex relationships, the military was expected to adjust their policies as well. Participants consisted of 93 college students and 90 services members (active duty/veterans). Participants were given one of three vignette scenarios concerning different experiences for a sergeant considering reenlistment with follow up questions, a survey using the Attitudes Towards Lesbians and Gay Men Scale-2016 (ATLG-2016), the Attitudes Towards Lesbians and Gay Men in the Military Scale-2016 (ATGML-2016), and Sell Assessment of Sexual Orientation. The data was used to assess the attitudes of civilians and service members and the role of leadership. A 3 x 2 Chi-Square Analysis was conducted with variables representing one of three vignettes received and a yes/no for each question asked following the vignette. Standardized residuals were computed to identify significant cells. A 2 X 2 MANOVA was run using age and status as the independent variable comparing it to the dependent variables ATLG-2016, ATLGM-2016. While there have been studies that explore the changes and acceptance of gay men and lesbians within the military, few have looked at the influence of the attitudes of leadership (platoon leaders and senior officers) towards gay men and lesbians.     A Survey of Texas Pork Producers Current Pre-Weaning Management Strategies

    The following survey was conducted to elucidate more information about the preweaning phase of pork production in the state of Texas. This survey was distributed via Qualtrics to members of the Texas Pork Producers Association (TPPA). A total of 72 surveys were completed. Producers answered questions regarding their demographics, operation type, neonatal care, weaning strategies, and mortality rates. There is little information available about pork production in the state of Texas. Demographic results indicate the majority of Texas pork producers are white (100%) males (83%) over the age of 45 (53%) with a bachelor’s degree or higher (53%). Most operations have a herd size of 6-30 head (75%), zero hired employees (79%), and classify themselves as show pig operations (75%). The industry has focused on implementing management strategies to combat increasing pre-weaning mortality (PWM) and sow mortality rates. A Proc Logistic analysis was used to indicate which producer demographics and management techniques significantly impacted mortality rates. As a producer’s years of experience in the swine industry increased, their piglet mortality significantly decreased (P=0.01). Ear notching (P=0.05) significantly increased piglet mortality. The following management strategies tended to decrease piglet mortality: an interaction between iron injections docking tails (P=0.09), an interaction between castration and antibiotic/anthelmintic use (P=0.07), and cross-fostering (P=0.09). Increasing the number of processing procedures performed during piglet processing was associated with significantly lower PWM (P\u3c0.0001). Measures that prevent PWM are beneficial to the swine industry both from an economic and welfare perspective. Texas producers currently practice many intensive management practices aimed at preventing PWM

    A Case Study on Fraternity Involvement of Black Men and Its Influence on Sense of Belonging at a Predominantly White Institution

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence fraternity involvement has on a sense of belonging for Black men at a mid-size, 4-year, predominantly White public institution. This case study used semistructured interviews and a focus group to capture the experiences of this population. As a result of this study, the researcher was able to explore the fraternity experiences of Black men and determine how fraternity involvement influences Black men’s sense of belonging at the selected institution. The aim of this study was to determine the specific areas in which these men are having the most difficulty at the institution to better meet the needs of this marginalized population

    An Assessment of Machine Learning Algorithms as Applied to Astronomical Data Sets

    As astronomical datasets increase in scale, the analysis of data becomes less feasible to perform “by hand.” At scales when this becomes an issue, the use of computerized analysis becomes a greater necessity. Modern astronomical surveys are producing terabytes of data available for analysis by the scientific community. Machine learning (ML) algorithms are increasingly being used to classify objects within this data to draw conclusions from the dataset as a whole, but there is a large and growing set of ML algorithms to choose from, and astronomers as a general rule are not familiar with these techniques. This project will explore the efficacy of several the currently available supervised machine learning algorithms to identify and recommend the top choices for researchers more interested in astronomy than in computer science

    Interfacial Reaction Between Tin and Copper Oxide Investigated by X-Ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

    Preliminary investigation performed on Sn/CuO interface exhibit chemical interaction at the interface. A 9 Å thick film of tin was deposited on a CuO substrate kept at room temperature. The interface was characterized in situ by the technique of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The shape and the binding energy of the core levels of Sn and Cu were recorded and analyzed. It was observed that the tin got oxidized to form SnO2. This was followed by the reduction of copper oxide to elemental copper. The study was extended to investigate the Sn/CuO for various thicknesses of the Sn overlayer. The electron-beam technique has been used for the deposition of the films. Copper was oxidized in a quartz tube furnace to form CuO. The CuO substrate was loaded in the processing chamber for the investigation. Various thicknesses of thin films of tin were deposited on such a substrate kept at room temperature. The Sn/CuO was characterized in situ. The spectral data showed a gradual reduction of copper oxide to elemental copper as the tin overlayer thickness was increased. The tin was oxidized to SnO2. The interface consisted of SnO2 and elemental Cu. Unreacted Sn was observed for thicknesses beyond 0.6 nm of the tin overlayer. The presence of unreacted Sn was utilized to obtain th interface width. For room temperature deposition of Sn over CuO, the interface width was found to be 0.68 ± 0.2 nm

    A Narrative Inquiry into Teacher Perceptions of Factors Impacting STEM Persistence in African American Female High School Students in a Texas STEM Academy

    African American females have been historically underrepresented in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) career fields. Even with recent initiatives to increase the STEM persistence across all populations, African American female representation has decreased by 1.6% while other underrepresented demographics have continued to rise. Intersectionality research suggests that African American females experience more challenges because they are designated a minority by both gender and by race. Typically, when results from STEM initiatives are reported, African Americans’ results include statistics for African American males, and STEM initiatives designed to increase female persistence often include results from Caucasian and Asian females who are not underrepresented in STEM. Thus, the needs of African American females may not be noticed nor sufficiently met in time to encourage STEM persistence. This narrative inquiry study sought to explore the research-based factors of STEM persistence: academic learning experiences and professional identity development of African American female high school students. Because research suggests that decisions regarding STEM careers are determined in high school, the researcher gathered information that discusses factors impacting STEM persistence in African American female students via semistructured interviews with high school teachers at a Texas STEM academy. These findings may provide additional insight into how to increase STEM persistence in American female students
