A Woman for Three Cows and Three Cows for a Woman: Property, Gender, and Agency in Early Medieval Ireland
Previous research, such as Nerys Patterson’s Cattle-Lords and Clansmen and Ruth Mazo Karras’s Unmarriages, do considerable work to provide interpretations of the laws guiding medieval Irish society and the status of medieval women throughout Europe. Researchers can continue building upon the historiography by addressing the laws that created systems that subverted gendered restrictions but also made room for increased agency and legal authority for women. This thesis contributes to the study of women and marriage and property laws of early medieval Ireland by providing a multifaceted survey of the laws’ effect on women and the basis of that effect on class. It finds that women often lived under the authority of male guardians, being used as pawns in their plays of power, being sold off or traded like livestock for their family’s gain, just as stereotypes of the medieval period would indicate. And yet, the same legal premises that often controlled women also granted them opportunities for greater legal and social mobility and authority through greater control of property
The Effects of a High Acuity Mental Health Intake Department on Assessment Counselors’ Health
Although little research has been conducted regarding the health and quality of life among acute, inpatient mental health intake counselors, the literature reports there are several protective factors that contribute to one’s ability to achieve and maintain a positive quality of life. The purpose of the study was to identify the effects of a high acuity mental health intake department on assessment counselors’ quality of life and overall health by utilizing a demographic information instrument and the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-BREF) tool. Quality of life, which includes physical health, psychological health, and social relationships were investigated by using a descriptive quantitative research design. Of the three factors of quality of life, physical health was found to be an overall predictor for acute, inpatient intake counselors’ ability to achieve quality of life. These findings indicate the need for further training and resources encouraging a healthy work-life balance among acute, inpatient mental health intake counselors, as well as a need for advocating for the health and wellbeing of these mental health professionals in the counseling field
Preparing and Piloting a Sustainable Agriculture Career Development Event
The objective of this research was to explore the experience of developing and piloting a new Career Development Event in sustainable agriculture and determine the most relevant content for the contest. This contest was open to all FFA members in Texas. There were 14 teams and 49 individuals who participated in the pilot contest on May 3, 2022. This study utilized a single-case-study approach and collected data using an online survey as well as discussions and experiences, and a narrative experience for the event. A discussion with the Texas FFA Executive Director. Data collected included recommendations from School-Based Agricultural Education teachers (SBAE)/ FFA Advisors and sustainable agriculture industry experts. Survey response included feedback from one industry expert and seven SBAE teachers/ FFA advisors. Questions that are answered correctly by 30% to 80% of contest participants were considered to be good question. The questions that fell out of this range were identified for revision or replacement. The ultimate goal of creating this contest is for eventual acceptance as a state approved contest by Texas FFA. The implementation of this contest at the state level will enable teachers to more easily integrate sustainable agricultural into SBAE curriculum
Content Analysis of Social and Emotional Learning in Mathematics-Related Children’s Literature
Domitrovich et al. (2017) linked social and emotional competence at a young age to adulthood success. Although research indicates a gap regarding how social and emotional skills can be taught in different content areas (Ananiadou & Claro, 2009; Binkley et al., 2011; Denham & Brown, 2010; Jones & Bouffard, 2012; Shear et al., 2011; Soland et al., 2013; Voogt & Roblin, 2010; Wilson et al., 2013), other studies discuss how to integrate social and emotional skills in content areas (Heath et al., 2017; Wajjid et al., 2013); little research addresses mathematics. This study used qualitative content analysis to analyze mathematics-related children’s literature for characteristics of CASEL’s social and emotional learning competencies by counting their frequency of occurrence. The following questions framed this study: What is the frequency of occurrence of CASEL’s five social and emotional learning competencies in mathematics-related children’s literature? How do CASEL’s social and emotional learning competencies appear in mathematics-related children’s literature? What are the social and emotional learning competencies manifested in mathematics-related children’s literature that were not identified by CASEL’s five social and emotional learning competencies? The findings indicated that all of CASEL’s 5 social and emotional learning competencies were evident over the 12 mathematics-related children’s books in this study. Social awareness was the most evident competency; self-awareness was the least evident competency. Social awareness was the only competency that appeared in all 12 books selected for this study. There were more latent occurrences than manifest occurrences of CASEL’s 5 social and emotional learning competencies. This is significant because the examples of social and emotional learning represented in children’s books can help readers understand how the characters think, feel, and deal with certain situations they encounter. Readers can learn from the characters and apply that knowledge to their own lives. Mathematics-related children’s books can also help readers gain deeper conceptual understanding of mathematics topics
The Lived Experiences of East Texas Rural School Principals: A Narrative Study
Principal leadership is crucial to the success of rural schools (Canales et al., 2008; Horst & Martin, 2007; Texas Education Agency [TEA], 2017). Research has shown that principals have a great impact on student learning through multiple pathways (Sebastian & Allensworth, 2012). Principals today must be instructional leaders, share a common vision, and use data to improve instruction to led successful schools in the age of accountability. Principals in small, rural schools are unique and the job is much different than for their urban or suburban counterparts. Rural schools are unique and have many challenges that other schools do not. These challenges represent a very different and unique context for school principals. The purpose of this qualitative narrative study is to examine the lived experiences of rural school principals that use transformational leadership practices in interactions with parents, teachers, and community members. The method of interviews will be used to learn about the lived experiences of rural school principals which will help to develop better understanding of how rural school principals can use the practices of transformational leadership to better their schools. The transformational leadership practices that will be examined are those derived by Leithwood’s (2012) Ontario Leadership Framework (OLF)
The Role of Instructional Representation in Learning Chemical Diagrams
Instructional representations are important for the teaching and learning of chemistry, and widely considered to be important for student success. Despite the ubiquity of these visualizations and tools in the classroom, there is a lack of data regarding how and when different types of representations are most effective. In the present study, we explore the use of augmented reality, a ball-and-stick model kit, and a static diagram for learning to interpret and translate Newman and wedge diagrams among high school students with no prior knowledge. In a repeated measures design, participants used each of the three instructional representations to complete a representational translation task involving the completion of a Newman or wedge diagram using the assigned representation at their station. In addition to the task score, we also measured spatial ability viathe Purdue Visualization of Rotations test. We found that the most effective representation is highly dependent upon the characteristics of the task. The generative tasks outperformed the completion tasks in all conditions, the AR representation was the worst for task performance overall, and the influence of spatial ability is also highly context dependent. This study contributes to the growing body of literature on representational competence and instructional representations in STEM
The Impact of Video Game Modality on Grit and Immersion
This dissertation aimed to explore the relationship between grit, immersion, and medium in a sample of college students interacting with a computer video game. Namely, that immersion is a predictor of grit. The term “immersion” as operationalized here means the computer system’s technological capacity to deliver a vivid experience that removes the user from physical reality. Immersive technology, which includes augmented reality, mixed reality, and virtual reality, is increasingly popular. Growing out of a need to explain behaviors and perceptions with regard to task persistence as a function of grit, the use of immersive technology represents a methodological approach to grit that has yet to be examined. To test this, participants were randomly assigned to play a horror game in either VR or on a 2D screen, then completed measures regarding grit, immersion, perceived level of fear, and difficulty, as well as demographic items. The hypothesis was partially confirmed, as immersion and components of grit were significantly higher in the VR version compared to PC. The relationships found between these variables not only highlight differences between VR versus 2D with respect to immersion, but have advanced our understanding of the grit trait. Further limitations and future directions are also discussed
