No full textIn this exegesis, I contend that certain compositional elements and production methods of dancehall, amapiano, and afrobeats demonstrate hip hop’s influence on contemporary Jamaican and African electronic music. In particular, the drum programming, track mixing, and use of sampling demonstrate a cross-pollination and cultural transfer between the two forms of music (on one hand, the African and Jamaican genres of dancehall, amapiano, and afrobeats, and on the other, the African American music of hip hop). These genres are fundamental to contemporary Black culture and share origins as vehicles for resistance to oppressive forces
Submersive Sounds: An Ecoacoustic Exploration of Aesthetic Experience
No full textIn my exegesis, I explore the convergence of ecoacoustics, environmental aesthetics and aesthetic experience within the backdrop of creative practice research. This research aims to investigate how sound can enhance aesthetic experiences of nature and engage listeners to foster stronger connections with nature. I draw on the philosophies of John Dewey, Arnold Berleant, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty to examine the practice of fieldwork, reflection and ecoacoustics and if these methods can create soundscapes that elicit an embodied, sensory engagement with nature.
Fieldwork is a significant contributing factor in this research as it is employed as part of the creative process and a method for collecting data. My study integrates Kristen Sharp\u27s approach to fieldwork, Donald Schön\u27s reflective practices, and techniques taken from ecoacoustics to capture and analyse environmental soundscapes for their aesthetic value.
The soundscapes produced in my research are designed to reflect the philosophy of Dewey\u27s aesthetic experience, where imagination and engagement with the environment are the main factors in creating sincere experiences. Incorporating Merleau-Ponty\u27s phenomenological ideas of embodiment and sensory perception, my research highlights the significance of physically being in the environment and how the presence of self influences the compositions. Bearleant\u27s aesthetics of engagement also inform the research by highlighting the listener\u27s active role in the aesthetic experience.
The discussion of this research suggests that ecoacoustic practices can enhance aesthetic engagement with nature, which provides a framework for understanding how soundscapes are both creative and ecological tools. My
research contributes to the field of environmental aesthetics by building on the understanding of how natural environments can be appreciated through sonic characteristics.
