Beyond Syntax: Teaching Programming as a Problem-Solving Tool in the AI Era

    No full text
This talk will begin by examining the limitations of current programming education models and the need for a holistic approach that blends technical skills with critical thinking. By integrating real-world problems and interdisciplinary projects, I will show how we can create a more engaging and practical learning experience. This approach not only prepares students for the technical challenges of AI but also equips them with the ability to apply programming skills to diverse fields such as healthcare, finance, and environmental science. The presentation will highlight case studies and strategies from educational institutions that have successfully implemented this approach. We will discuss the benefits of using AI tools to enhance learning, such as their role in targeting critical and computational thinking, automated code reviews, and project-based learning platforms. Additionally, we will explore the importance of ethical considerations and potential drawbacks of introducing LLMs early in programming education. By the end of this talk, participants will gain insights into innovative teaching methodologies that go beyond syntax, fostering a new generation of programmers who are not only proficient coders but also good problem solvers and ethical thinkers. This shift is crucial for developing the skills necessary to thrive in the AI era and to harness the full potential of programming as a transformative tool

Man in a room: Methods of cinematic identification & repulsion in the work of Paul Schrader

    No full text
This project takes the form of practice-led research consisting of a short experimental film and an accompanying written exegesis. Together they investigate a specific form of cinematic identification associated with the films of Paul Schrader. Schrader’s films have developed a cinematic identification that oscillates between attraction and repulsion and in doing so complicates the spectator’s identification with the main character. To understand how Schrader’s films engender this form of identification the written component conducts an analysis of the cinematic techniques employed in his films, and a literature review of research. It uses the outcome of this research to then set up a series of experiments that will form a short film work, created in collaboration with performers embodying heightened versions of themselves based on interviews derived from a close-reading of filmic texts

An Animation Production Extension of Spirit Spider

    No full text
The Spirit Spider project comprises two components, a creative work called Spirit Spider and this accompanying exegesis. This project exemplifies a deep exploration of the animation process, emphasizing the iterative nature of creative development over the interpretation of the final product. Through each phase, from initial storyboarding to overcoming technical challenges and refining skills in Blender, the project has adhered to a methodology that prioritizes creative problem-solving and adaptability. This exegesis has examined the careful selection of tools, such as Blender, and the integration of newly learned techniques that continuously shaped the project’s direction. By dedicating focused time to both learning and applying new animation concepts, the project moved forward in a way that allowed for growth in technical skills, strategic project management, and process refinement

    Animating Feminism

Animation mirrors society, reflecting its values, beliefs and challenges, becoming a tool to enable cultural improvement by recognising diversity and critiquing socio-political issues. Inspired by traditional Eastern European animation, renowned for its surrealism and socio-political narratives, this research aims to expand the medium’s potential. Directors like Jan Svankmajer and Jiri Trnka created masterpieces based on folklore, mythology and political commentary. This research aims to intertwine and shape animated works\u27 content and context by honouring this tradition. The research explores the multifaceted role of contemporary animation, which embeds Eastern European stylistic techniques to disrupt popular story structures and shape social discourse. Animation today is substantially more than mere entertainment or a cartoon for “kids,” possessing an affective power over audiences with its ability to provide emotional satisfaction and disrupt traditional styles. The project’s scope examines the intersecting challenges of gender, power and societal expectations. The project employs a practice-led methodology, experimenting with surrealist techniques and exploring narratives; my surreal stop-motion animation educates and inspires audiences. The methodology investigates research into Eastern European animation techniques and visual aesthetics, narratives and character representation and modern leadership strategies. Case studies demonstrate how Eastern European directors use allegories, metaphors and symbols to purport socio-political themes, drawing from personal experiences to make viewers feel like they are a part of the world

Zine and Collage-making as an Engine for Queer Self-Making: Cutting, Pasting, and Seeing What Sticks

    No full text
The purpose of this project aims to explore the potential of graphic design as a means of discovering and expressing queer identity on both a personal level and as a form of public engagement- to connect the individual to community and discover new knowledge of the self. This project aims to add to the conversation and representation of queer identity so that both current and future generations can exist comfortably in their bodies and the spaces they occupy in the world. The necessity of more queer, more diverse and nuanced perspectives within studies of queer identity is more important than ever. The attack on transgender and gender non-conforming bodies and communities in the public sphere has created an atmosphere of intolerance and marginalization. As a closeted queer I aim to find out if what I dream of can be possible in this lifetime. This is my chance to be vulnerable, to flay open myself to examine and be examined, to figure out as a surgeon does to their patient how to fix the quiet heartache I’ve carried in me since before I could comprehend what it was about
