    In Tensile // In Between

    No full text
In Tensile // In Between operates as both artistic artefact and theoretical critique, demonstrating how creative practice can embody and extend academic discourse. This creative-critical work examines shifting perceptions of course delivery within creative tertiary education, arguing that project-based learning enables the seamless embedding of socio-cultural discourse and theories within practical making processes. The poem interrogates how educational environments can cultivate critical thinking through what I term tensile pedagogy —an approach that maintains productive charge between opposing forces rather than seeking synthesis or resolution. This concept builds upon King\u27s (2017) work on pedagogy as tension, which argues that tension and incompleteness are part of education, especially within the practice of pedagogy and radical relationality brings necessary uncertainty to educational encounters

Introducing a Non-Zero Post-Humanistic Framework for Problem Solving in Design Education

    No full text
This paper proposes an innovative framework within interdisciplinary higher education courses that integrates non-zero post-humanistic design thinking and the concept of embodiment for addressing problem solving. We explore how design education can move from a human-centered approach, to a post-humanistic more-than-human approach. Central to our approach is non- zero thinking, emphasising collaborative solutions that benefit all stakeholders—human and non- human—recognising our shared responsibilities within ecosystems. We also introduce the notion of qualia in design education, highlighting how immersive experiences can evoke deeper emotional responses, fostering empathy and a greater understanding of complex problems. This combined approach achieves three key outcomes for students: 1) a deeper intrinsic understanding of the world through subjective experience; 2) an ontological framework for understanding interconnection; 3) an appreciation of collaboration with the more-than-human world through non-zero thinking. Identifying gaps in higher education, we detail the implementation of this framework in three courses across design (Creative Futures), creative industries (Extended Reality for Social Impact Design), and computer sciences (Software Development Fundamentals) and use the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals as examples for problems students need to address. Results from student outputs, surveys and reflections indicate a shift toward broader, more innovative ways of thinking, underscoring the potential of this integrative approach to cultivate resilience and interconnectedness. We discuss possibilities for extending this educational model to assist students in addressing global challenges through a holistic, inclusive and empathetic lens

“Virtual Reality and Creativity: Evaluating Immersive Painting Experiences and Art-based Mindfulness” presented by Heli Puhakka

    No full text
New affordable head-mounted displays and interactive virtual technologies provide opportunities for researchers and practitioners to create and experience mindfulness. The use of virtual reality for art-based mindfulness practices is novel and promotes full-body, immersive experiences to improve mood, however, researchers and practitioners have a limited understanding of mindfulness and creativity in the virtual environment. This paper identifies the research gap by examining how active art-based mindfulness practices in virtual reality promote mindfulness, compared to passive methods such as viewing a virtual image to experience relaxation. Fourteen participants were interviewed in the qualitative ethnographic study. Methods included semi-structured interviews, direct observation, video-cued recall and thematic analysis, which were informed by flow, immersion and presence theories. The six main emerging themes from the participant colouring experiences included: (1) mindfulness; (2) mark-making; (3) space; (4) depth perception; (5) sense of time; and (6) agency. The data presented evidence that participants experienced mindfulness while colouring a virtual mandala and the emerging themes were intertwined with experiences of flow, immersion, and presence. The study benefits researchers and practitioners in understanding how creativity can enhance mindfulness in interactive virtual art environments
