Building the Perfect Live Case from Start to Finish in One Semester
Critics contend that traditional business cases fail students. A possible answer to these failings is the live case, in which students provide solutions to a business’ current problems. However, evidence supporting the efficacy of live cases is incomplete. This article describes a semester project in which 29 senior marketing majors drafted and analyzed six live cases. At the conclusion of the semester, all 29 students provided feedback on the project. Students indicated that the project was rewarding and challenging. Their feedback is presented, along with a discussion of ways to improve the live-case experience
When Beneficence Benefits the Benefactor: Altruism and Rent Seeking
The process of rent seeking refers to the use of political processes to capture payments to a resource beyond the opportunity cost of the resource. I describe an example of rent seeking that coexists with the economic problem of explaining altruism. I use data from real property sales to estimate the value of an economic rent that accrued to an individual as the direct result of a local government public expenditure project on donated land. I argue that we may view the donation of the land as the winning bid in a rent seeking contest and therefore not purely altruistic
An Interdisciplinary Approach to Principles of Accounting: Optimizing the Use of a Finance Lab
The integration of technology has become a fundamental element of instruction and engagement on many university campuses. In university schools of business, finance labs and trading rooms are proving to be a beneficial addition to business education. Through electronic displays of global market information and access to real-time data, students engage in hands-on learning and real-world experience. Finance labs also provide the opportunity for innovation and impact, as well as an interdisciplinary approach to business education, research, and collaboration. The current study seeks to determine student perceptions of the learning environment of a finance lab, as well as perceptions of the hands-on course activities using Morningstar financial data
A Framework for Using Structural Equations Modeling in Information Systems Research
The use of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) in behavioral science and particularly in Information Systems (IS) research is growing rapidly. By using SEM, researchers can theoretically represent and empirically test models that contain latent variables. Despite the great interest in the use of SEM in IS research, sufficient guidelines have not been established for addressing the criteria for selecting either Covariance Based SEM (CB-SEM) or Partial Least Square SEM (PLS-SEM). Our study fills this gap by proposing a framework to use when selecting the appropriate form of SEM to use. We also highlight the various psychometrics properties and the statistical tests required to be reported in various stages of SEM Analysis. Our framework is then applied to a sample of top tier IS publications which utilized SEM. Findings indicate that many of these studies did not clearly justify and explain their type of research as exploratory or confirmatory in nature, nor did they use the proper SEM method. Moreover, most of the articles failed to accurately report the psychometric properties of their measurement model and the required statistical tests. The framework proposed in this paper has the potential to significantly enhance the rigor and quality of future IS research which utilizes SEM
Microbial Community in Hyperalkaline Steel Slag-Fill Emulates Serpentinizing Springs
To date, a majority of studies of microbial life in hyperalkaline settings focus on environments that are also highly saline (haloalkaline). Haloalkaline conditions oer microbes abundant workarounds to maintain pH homeostasis, as salt ions can be exchanged for protons by dedicated antiporter proteins. Yet hyperalkaline freshwater systems also occur both naturally and anthropogenically, such as the slag fill aquifers around former Lake Calumet (Chicago, IL, USA). In this study, 16S rRNA gene sequences and metagenomic sequence libraries were collected to assess the taxonomic composition and functional potential of microbes present in these slag-polluted waterways. Relative 16S rRNA gene abundances in Calumet sediment and water samples describe community compositions not significantly divergent from those in nearby circumneutral conditions. Major dierences in composition are mainly driven by Proteobacteria, primarily one sequence cluster closely related to Hydrogenophaga, which comprises up to 85% of 16S rRNA gene abundance in hyperalkaline surface sediments. Sequence identity indicates this novel species belongs to the recently established genus Serpentinomonas, a bacterial lineage associated with natural freshwater hyperalkaline serpentinizing springs

The recently proposed bacterial phylum Kiritimatiellaeota represents a globally distributed monophyletic clade distinct from other members of the Planctomycetes, Verrucomicrobia, and Chlamydiae (PVC) superphylum. IMPACT OF FAT GRIP ATTACHMENTS ON MUSCULAR STRENGTH AND NEUROMUSCULAR ACTIVATION DURING RESISTANCE EXERCISE
The purpose of this study was to examine the acute effects of Fat Gripz (FG) on muscular activation and strength.Subjects completed 1 repetition maximum (1RM) testing with an Olympic barbell (OB) and with FG attached to an OB during the exercises of deadlift, bent-over row, upright row, concentration curl, and completed maximum repetitions of pull-ups until failure. Surface electromyography (EMG) was used to measure muscle activity from 8 upper extremity muscles (trapezius, medial deltoid, biceps brachii, triceps brachii, flexor carpi radialis, flexor carpi ulnaris, extensor carpi radialis, and extensor carpi ulnaris), while performing maximal voluntary isometric contractions during 1RM trials and while performing maximum number of pull-ups
Effects of a 3-week High-Fat-Low-Carbohydrate Diet on Lipid and Glucose Profiles in Experienced, Middle-age Male Runners
This study examined glucose and lipid marker responses following a three-week, ad libitum low-carbohydrate high-fat diet (LCHF; approximately 70 percent of total calories from fat, less than 50 grams per day of net carbohydrates) versus the habitual mixed macronutrient diet (HMD) of eight middle-aged, trained male runners (40 plus or minus 10 years; VO2 peak = 49 plus or minus 4 milliliters per kilogram per minute). Blood was drawn at 0600 from an antecubital vein after an overnight fast under conditions of no exercise or heat stress (NEXH; 48 hours of restriction from intense exercise) or 24 hours after exercise and heat stress (EXH; a 60-minute run in hot conditions plus a 5-kilometer time trial) for both dietary conditions. Glucose improvement during LCHF approached but did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.07). Pre-exercise triacylglycerol did not differ between treatments but decreased more than 20 milligrams per deciliter (p \u3c 0.05) for both treatments from NEXH to EXH (HMD = 42 plus or minus 16; LCHF = 35 plus or minus 21 milligrams per deciliter). Main effects for diet were exhibited for HDL-C during NEXH and EXH (HMD = 48 plus or minus 10 and 50 plus or minus 11; LCHF = 57 plus or minus 13 and 60 plus or minus 13 milligrams per deciliter), and LDL-C also increased (p = 0.02) by approximately 20 milligrams per deciliter for LCHF at both collection points, resulting in approximately 30 milligrams per deciliter greater total cholesterol for LCHF before and 24 hours after exercise (p \u3c 0.05). A three-week, ad libitum LCHF did not elicit significant negative cardiovascular disease risk in male runners 30 to 50 years of age with healthy pre-intervention lipid and glucose marker status
