DO ORTHODONTISTS AND PATIENTS PREFER DIFFERENT LINGUISTIC RESOURCES TO OVERCOME LANGUAGE BARRIERS IN THE CLINICAL SETTING?
No full textIntroduction: This study examines communication methods used by patients and clinicians to overcome language barriers in dental settings, aiming to determine the most preferred and beneficial resource.
Methods: Surveys were distributed to a randomized sample of orthodontists in the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) and Spanish-speaking limited English proficient (LEP) patients in Central Virginia. Questions assessed linguistic resources and their impact on visit perception, decision-making, doctor patient relationships, compliance, and satisfaction.
Results: Among 31 providers and 64 patients, bilingual staff members and friends/family members were the most utilized resources. However, both groups selected bilingual staff as the most preferred resource (patients: 59%, providers: 61%).
Conclusions: Both patients and clinicians favor bilingual staff members as a resource for overcoming language barriers, but further research is needed to optimize patient care

Hospital dentists provide vital pre-surgical evaluation, diagnosis, and follow-up care to prevent dental complications and improve patient quality of life post-surgery. Living Guidelines: A Giant Leap for Patient Care, Clinical Practice, and Dental Journalism
No full textDr. Smiley\u27s President\u27s message recognizes the collaboration between the American Dental Association (ADA), the University of Pennsylvania and other stakeholders in launching the living guideline collaboration as a significant advancement for the profession. This initiative, focusing on oral health, will be continually updating clinical practice guidelines with new evidence, providing timely, rigorously reviewed, and reliable clinical guidance. He notes that previous ADA Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPGs) were high-quality but many are now outdated, a point emphasized by the ADA Science & Research Institute’s External Review Committee. The Living Guideline Program, a collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, integrates artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies to inform human experts for efficient updates. Smiley stresses that this commitment to continuous maintenance will significantly enhance the relevance of CPGs and presents a unique opportunity for our publications to partner with developers and effectively communicate these updates. He suggests this initiative is a gold mine for content, enabling editors to mentor new authors in explaining the clinical rationale behind guideline updates and reinforcing evidence-based practice. He calls on dental editors and journalists to champion the integration of the latest evidence into their journalistic work, amplifying the impact of these efforts across the profession
