Could Have Seen That Coming: New York State Department of Health taken to task for failing to provide proper oversight of Medicaid managed care provider networks

    No full text
A recent audit conducted by the Office of the New York State Comptroller (OSC) found that the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) oversight of Medicaid managed care healthcare provider networks was largely illusory and a paperwork sham. This raises the much larger question of whether Medicaid managed care is really serving the population of Medicaid patients. It is already almost a given that it is not serving healthcare providers well

    Amyloidoma of the Palate

    No full text
There have been 17 reported cases of isolated amyloid deposition (amyloidoma) of the hard palate (Table 1). We present an 18th case, with a review of the literature on amyloidosis. Systemic conditions, such as multiple myeloma, must be ruled out when amyloid deposition is present. However, localized amyloidoma of the palate is rare, and there are few cases reported in the literature

Government and Insurance and Access (CGIA) Update

    No full text
The MDA Board of Trustees has established its 2026 legislative priorities, focusing on dental loss ratios, assignment of benefits, and virtual credit card payment reform. Key issues include addressing the workforce shortage, student debt, and improving Medicaid anesthesia reimbursement. The update also tracks several House Bills, such as those regarding voluntary license surrender (HB 4929) and foreign-trained dentist licensure (HB 4921), which the MDA opposes to maintain standards. Despite a slow legislative session in 2025, the MDA continues to advocate for transparency in third-party litigation and updates to specialty advertising rules. These efforts aim to protect the profession and ensure fair practices within the Michigan healthcare landscape

Guidance for Authors, Editors and Publishers on the Use of Generative AI

    No full text
This paper from AADEJ presents best-practice guidelines for the ethical use of generative artificial intelligence (GAI) and large language models (LLMs) in the creation, editing, and publication processes in dental writing and publishing. It examines how LLMs, such as ChatGPT, can enhance efficiency across writing and publishing workflows, while also identifying the operational risks associated with their design. Key areas of focus include the implications of LLM algorithms and training data, particularly regarding the risks they pose to intellectual property, privacy, and the integrity of the profession’s literature. Additionally, the paper provides an overview of the legal, ethical, and copyright issues impacting authors, editors, reviewers, and publishers. An environmental scan conducted in July 2024 assessed the awareness and adoption of GAI use guidance within the dental publishing community. A literature search of the existing GAI use guidance from journals, publishers, and publishing-ethics organizations updated in September 2025, informed this paper. In November 2025, the stakeholder panel finalized consensus-based recommendations through a formal voting process. The resulting AADEJ model guidance statements provide a framework for dental authors, editors, and publishers to integrate GAI technologies into their work. These guidelines emphasize three core principles: preserving the author\u27s authentic voice and substantive human contributions essential for copyrightability and ethical representation of authorship ensuring content validity and accuracy through rigorous human oversight ensuring transparency through clear disclosure practices that enable editors, reviewers, and readers to critically appraise the role of GAI in the work. To support implementation, this paper includes a color-coded desk-side tool that editors and publishers can reference when developing GAI guidance policies tailored to their individual publication needs. Titanium Hypersensitivity as Possible Cause of Dental Implant Failures

    No full text
For many decades, titanium implants have achieved a remarkably high success rate. However, there are cases in which osseointegration does not occur as predicted or desired. In these cases, an analysis of the factors that led to the implant failure must be conducted. There are multiple, widely accepted potential causes of such implant failures. Today, one must also consider titanium hypersensitivity as a potential reason for failure. Symptoms of a titanium allergic reaction may include mucosal erythema, swelling of lips, purpuric patches on hard and soft palate, ulcers in the oral cavity, hyperplastic gingivitis, cheilitis, eczematous eruptions on face and lichenoid reactions

Lessons Learned from My First Patient Transition

    No full text
A new associate reflects on the challenges and lessons of transitioning into her father\u27s established practice. The author emphasizes the importance of listening to long-term patients to understand their history and build trust. While new practitioners often feel the need to prove technical skills, patients primarily seek reassurance and continuity of care. Successful transitions require a balance between respecting existing systems and gradually introducing a new perspective. Introductions by the senior doctor can significantly ease patient apprehension. Ultimately, the experience underscores that dentistry is deeply rooted in relationships and communication, requiring patience and humility to maintain the stability of the practice team
