    Enhancing shareholder and market value through innovation capability using panel data analysis: an implementation of machine learning models as an additional predictor

    Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of innovation capability on shareholders and market value using panel data analysis, both static and dynamic, in addition to predicting return on equity (ROE) and Tobin’s Q using various machine learning algorithms to reach the most accurate model. Design/methodology/approach This study uses different econometric model and machine learning models. Both static and dynamic panel regression analyses have been considered. Findings This study finds that innovation capability significantly improves financial performance, with CatBoost outperforming other machine learning models in predictive accuracy. Key drivers include leverage, firm size and net income, highlighting the strategic importance of innovation in enhancing ROE and Tobin’s Q. These insights emphasize innovation’s role in achieving competitive advantage in emerging markets like Egypt. Originality/value This paper uniquely combines econometric and machine learning methods to analyze innovation capability’s impact on financial performance in Egypt, offering a novel framework and actionable insights for enhancing shareholder and market value in emerging markets

    Thermoluminescence characteristics, and potential feasibility of a homemade CaSO4: Er phosphor

    This research introduces a custom-prepared calcium sulfate (CaSO4):Er thermoluminescent phosphor synthesized using the coprecipitation method. It focuses on its development, analysis, and potential uses. Structural identification was carried out through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), while thermoluminescence (TL) analysis investigated the dosimetric characterization such as gamma dose-response, thermal fading, reusability, and minimum detectable dose. This custom phosphor exhibited reasonable sensitivity to ionizing radiation, with a relative sensitivity of 19.4 ± 0.47 % compared to TLD-100. It is capable of detecting very low doses, down to 19.7 mGy. Based on the linearity index, the prepared phosphor exhibits linearsublinear behavior between 0.5 and 200 Gy and linear-supralinear behavior up to 2 kGy and notable reusability (accuracy within 4 %). Thermal fading of 42 % after 24 h from irradiation followed by 15 % after 3 d with no significant fading during the remaining investigation time of 27 days was observed implying more future investigation and analysis of the recorded glow curve and the effect of thermal treatment of the prepared phosphor. In parallel, Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS) was used to examine pure and erbium-doped calcium sulfate samples. Optical transitions at 5.24 eV and 3.92 eV were observed in the pure samples while doping with Er3+ ions introduced additional transitions at 1.88 eV, 2.38 eV, 2.54 eV, and 3.24 eV. Photoluminescence measurements confirmed the successful incorporation of erbium ions, further illustrating the impact of doping on the material’s electronic structure and optical properties.     Optical, structural, and gamma shielding characteristics of bismuth-doped lithium borosilicate glass composite

    This study investigates the optical, structural, and gamma radiation shielding properties of bismuth- doped lithium borosilicate glass composites. Glasses containing 0–20 mol% Bi₂O₃ were synthesized and analyzed using XRD, FTIR, density measurements, and UV–Vis spectroscopy. All samples exhibited an amorphous structure. The density increased markedly from 2.31 g/cm³ (0 mol% Bi₂O₃) to 4.59 g/ cm³ (20 mol% Bi₂O₃), accompanied by a molar volume expansion from 27.33 to 31.02 cm³/mol. Optical studies revealed a progressive reduction in the band gap energy from 3.44 eV to 2.39 eV, while the Urbach energy increased from 0.216 eV to 0.488 eV, indicating enhanced structural disorder with Bi₂O₃ incorporation. Gamma attenuation analysis showed a significant improvement in shielding efficiency: at 0.662 MeV, the mass attenuation coefficient reached 9.83 × 10⁻² cm²/g with an effective atomic number up to 22.24, compared to only 7.76 × 10⁻² cm²/g for Portland concrete. Moreover, the half- value layer decreased with Bi₂O₃ loading, confirming improved attenuation performance. These results highlight that bismuth-doped lithium borosilicate glasses are promising lead-free materials for medical and nuclear radiation shielding applications

    The western-feminist slogan ‘the personal is political’ (Hanisch, 1970) emerged in the late 1960s, connecting women’s varied experiences of, for example, reproductive autonomy, pay inequality, childcare/household labour, and domestic violence, with social and political issues. These include social justice, civil rights, abortion access, gay and women’s liberation, the dismantling of systemic racism and structural oppression. As an Irish, feminist, auto-ethnographic artist-designer-writer-academic, my lived experience of three decades of political violence and social repression in Northern Ireland (1967-98) and the different but no less complex cultures of the UK (1996-2022) and Egypt (1922-), is informed by deliberatively, intentionally designed activism for freedom, autonomy and equality. Of the several meanings of design (Merriam-Webster, n.d.), I am drawn to the verbs devise, contrive, plot, scheme, calculate, and the adverbs deliberately, purposefully and intentionally, as they allow for cunning narrative and crafty advocacy

    Design, novel one-pot green synthesis, and biological evaluation of pyrazolopyridine-congeners selectively targeting HER2+ breast cancer

    Breast cancer (BC) is among the most prevalent and most aggressive cancer types affecting females. Several targets were investigated to tackle this problem, among them HER2 receptors are one on the most studied targets. In this study we report the synthesis of 18 different pyrazolopyridine (3a–r) derivatives using a novel green onepot method. The synthesized compounds were screened against NCI 60 human tumor cell panel at single concentration. The six top compounds (3c, 3d, 3f, 3l, 3m and 3o) were followed up by plotting their IC50 values and selectivity indices against different cancer types. Kinase profiling for the top two compounds (3f and 3o) was done against 20 different kinases and showed that they have selective inhibition of HER2 (with − 88 and − 75 % inhibition) comparable to Tucatinib (− 90 % inhibition). In addition, Annexin V PI/FITC apoptosis assay using BT474 cell lines on compounds 3l, 3o and 3f demonstrate the target specificity of our most potent compounds towards HER2 + ve harboring cells. In vivo antitumor activity of compound 3f on BC xenograft mouse model demonstrates that the recorded tumor size over the course of study was significantly reduced by 19.45 % when mice treated with 3f compared to 38.6 % reduction when treated with lapatinib. Finally molecular docking and molecular dynamics studies were used to investigate and understand the potential binding modes and interactions between the synthesized compounds and HER2 on the molecular level. In summary, this study presents the synthesis of this new promising scaffold as anti breast cancer medication using a novel green one-pot method

    Economic impact and clinical benefits of clinical pharmacy interventions: A six-year multi-center study using an innovative medication management tool

    Background Increasing healthcare costs, particularly in Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) like Egypt, highlight the need for rational economic strategies. Clinical pharmacy interventions offer potential benefits by reducing drug therapy problems and associated costs, thereby supporting healthcare system sustainability. Objective This study evaluates the economic impact and clinical benefits of clinical pharmacy interventions in four tertiary hospitals in Egypt by implementing an innovative tool for medication management, focusing on cost avoidance and return on investment (ROI), while accounting for case severity and drug therapy problem (DTP) resolution. Methods Utilizing a digital tool, cost avoidance was assessed by considering the severity of patient cases and the effectiveness of clinical pharmacists’ interventions in resolving identified DTPs. Additionally, ROI was calculated by incorporating both full-time equivalent (FTE) and non-FTE costs to evaluate the overall economic impact of clinical pharmacy services over a six-year period across four tertiary care hospitals in Egypt. Results Over six years, a total of 492,612 patients were reviewed, leading to 19,240 comprehensive clinical pharmacy interventions. These interventions achieved an 88.63% resolution of DTPs, significantly reducing patient risk by preventing adverse DTP consequences, resulting in a total cost avoidance of EGP 265.32 million (USD 8.60 million) and an average ROI of 7.6 (760%). This underscores the substantial economic impact of clinical pharmacy services, particularly in LMICs and countries transitioning to universal health insurance coverage, where cost efficiency and patient safety are critical. Conclusion This study underscores the importance of clinical pharmacy interventions in improving healthcare outcomes and generating significant economic benefits, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. By accounting for case severity and the level of DTP consequences, along with the efficiency of clinical pharmacist-led interventions in resolving DTPs, the economic impact of these services can be more accurately evaluated. These findings are essential for informing policy decisions, highlighting the critical role of clinical pharmacy services in supporting healthcare systems facing economic constraints

    The Stained and Bloody Cloths of Ireland presents a textiles and material culture view of Irish shame, oppression, morality and repression. Ireland – north and south – has sustained significant change in the last 100 years, since partial independence from Britain, accelerating at the end of the twentieth century with legalisation of contraception, divorce, gay marriage, the end – or at least reduction – of the ‘Troubles’ in the North, and freedom to choose abortion and reproductive autonomy. In parallel to this, many instances of societal and ecclesiastical abuse, sexual repression, superstition and cruelty, have come to light through a series of scandals including the use of unmarried mothers as unpaid labour in laundries throughout Ireland until the mid-1990s, the deaths of women in hidden childbirth and babies in mishandled miscarriages, the unhealthy entanglement of Church (Catholic and Protestant) and State (Northern and Southern). This is compounded by sectarianism, the persistent prejudice experienced by Irish Travellers, Pavees or Mincéirs, the overt racism experienced in Ireland by the diaspora communities of other lands, and the poverty of care of direct provision for asylum seekers in the so-called ‘land of a thousand welcomes’. This collection of specially commissioned essays tells the stories of cloth and clothing, textiles and materials that have been actually or symbolically stained by blood or other body fluids in Ireland. It is a meditation on national identit(ies) in the whole island of Ireland, and the operation in those contested, mythologised and traumatised identities in female (and other ‘feminine/feminised’, for which read marginalised or disempowered) bodies. By focusing on the role of these across topics as diverse as witchcraft and folklore, relics of revolution, broken pelvises and medical cruelty, valorised virgins and women to blame, maternal craft and crafty mothers, white-as-snow cleanliness and the ‘race problem’ in Ireland, conflict and resistance, goodness and godliness, starvation and piety, families and the ties and bindings of blood, home, homo-erotics and homo-phobics, scabs that don’t heal, washing and activism – the book aims to ‘lance the boil’ of Irish social history, celebrating the movement of the island of Ireland into post-Church, post-conflict, post-nostalgia modernity that, while still a painful transition, is a vital part of a country coming to terms with its past and looking to its future

    Public spaces in many cities worldwide struggle with limited green space and features, hindering resident engagement and overall quality of life. This study investigates smart open spaces as a potential solution, exploring application strategies through a literature review and a case study of the central park of Masdar City (MENA region). The study aims to identify key criteria for assessing smart public space quality and understand expert perceptions via structured interviews. Analysis of expert judgments revealed alignment with literature on the importance of technologies like camera surveillance and smart lighting for security and sustainability, respectively. However, discrepancies emerged regarding digital apps and smart signage, highlighting the need for further exploration to optimize the user experience. This study ultimately seeks to inform best practices for user-centered design of smart technologies within public spaces, aiming to improve qualities of public space such as safety and security, community and engagement, sustainability, legibility and accessibility, and sense of place and connection to the space\u27s historical roots, consequently enhancing the user experience in emerging smart cities
