Get PDFThis paper reviews the current research regarding the inclusion of students with special education services in the general education setting and what steps would be necessary to effectively implement more inclusive approaches in schools today. There has been considerable debate about the potential effects of inclusion on students with and without disabilities in recent years. All students have the potential to make a positive impact in the classroom. Students with special needs deserve to learn in the least restrictive environment possible, having access to the same resources and socialization as their peers. In creating an inclusive education plan for any student, it is important to consider the role and perspective of each person involved in the child’s education, relevant data, and current research and best practices
The Role of Professional Development in Effective Standards Implementation: Developing Comprehensive Implementation Supports for the 2020 Minnesota ELA Standards
Get PDFThis application thesis explores the role of professional development in effective standards implementation. Applying themes in the research on standards implementation and professional development, a continuum of support was created to support the implementation of the revised 2020 Minnesota English Language Arts standards. In the review, the research themes impacting standards implementation professional development were identified, including teacher perception and attitudes, professional development design, and effectiveness of implementation. Within these themes, elements of effective professional development were used to create a menu of four main supports to educators including informational webinars, three standards implementation sessions, a resource hub, and ongoing implementation coaching. These supports were built on the elements of content knowledge, process knowledge, teacher collaboration, professional development design, customization flexibility, and instructional practices connections to standards. The author of the application thesis concludes that professional development is a critical component of effective standards implementation, and as standards’ revision cycles continue, professional development on standards implementation should continue to be widely promoted. Additionally, the continuum of comprehensive implementation supports contained in the application portion of the thesis could serve as a replicable model for the implementation of content standards
Gender Differences in High School Students’ Perceptions of Math and Science Identity, Self-Efficacy, and Utility
Get PDFThis quantitative dissertation examined the differences between young men and women’s perceptions of mathematics and science identity, self-efficacy, and utility. There are gender norms and stereotypes that impact identity, self-efficacy, and perceived utility of mathematics and science. The secondary data analyzed were drawn from the follow-up High School Longitudinal Survey (HSLS:09). The survey was administered to 20,594 11th-grade students enrolled at 904 eligible public, charter, and private schools from all states and the District of Columbia. The study investigated whether there are gender-based statistically significant (p \u3c 0.05) differences in 11th grade students’ perceptions of mathematics and science identity, mathematics and science self-efficacy, and mathematics and science utility. The results of the study suggest that there are statistically significant differences between the genders in mathematics identity, science identity, mathematics self-efficacy, and science self-efficacy, but not statistically significant differences in mathematics utility and science utility. Continued research could prove useful to continue analyzing the gender gaps present
The Moderating Influence of Religiousness/Spirituality on COVID-19 Impact and Change in Psychotherapy
No full textThe COVID-19 pandemic has spurred a global surge in empirical research examining the influence of the pandemic on individuals’ mental health symptoms and well-being. Within this larger literature is a rapidly growing literature on the associations among religiousness/spirituality, COVID-19 impact, symptoms and well-being. Largely absent from this literature is a specific research focus on psychotherapy clients, and the influence of religiousness/spirituality and COVID-19 impact on change during treatment. One prominent theory in the existing literature centers on the notion that religiousness/spirituality is a coping resource for individuals during times of adversity. Yet, existing empirical findings present mixed evidence for the religious/spiritual coping hypothesis. We expanded upon these emerging research trends to examine the influence of religious/spiritual struggles, religious/spiritual commitment, religious/spiritual exploration, and COVID-19 impact ratings on psychotherapy change in a sample of adult clients (N = 185; Mage = 38.06; SD = 15.78; range = 19–81; 61.1% female; 69.7% White). The results of latent trajectory analysis identified three subgroups that differed on initial levels of symptoms and well-being and the nature of change over three time points. The COVID-19 impact ratings predicted change trajectories. As more positive ratings of COVID-19 impact increased, membership in the no change trajectory was more likely relative to the deterioration trajectory at high levels of both religious/spiritual commitment and ex-ploration. The implications emphasize the need for judicious assessment of religiousness/spirituality and COVID-19 impact before integrating religiousness/spirituality into treatment

The Effect of Dual Language Immersion Programs on English Learner Language Acquisition and Assessment Scores
Get PDFThis literature review was designed to answer the question: What is the effect of dual language immersion (DLI) programs on English learner (EL) language acquisition and academic success? The studies selected for this review focus on the academic and lingual successes of ELs when enrolled in a DLI program. It identifies potential challenges to be eradicated from the DLI educational model, including teacher or administrative misconceptions and aspects of inequality. Overall, the literature shows that students enrolled in a DLI program perform at a level comparable to or greater than that of their non-DLI peers on both language and content area assessments
Fostering School-Home Partnerships: Transforming Learning as a Result of the COVID-19 Pandemic
No full textThe COVID-19 pandemic illuminated the need for schools to strengthen their relationships with families in order to support remote learning. Framed with the theoretical lens of the traditional partnership model, this paper details the results of a survey completed by 56 Minnesota district level technology directors. The survey asked how school districts were responding to the technology needs of students and families while in hybrid and distance learning models. Three main themes emerged from the survey data: maximizing caregiver support to improve student learning, increasing attendance and engagement in the online learning environment, and building technology savviness in parents and caregivers. Recommendations for further research include the formation of focus groups with technology directors from Minnesota and beyond. As a growing number of districts offer online schools and there is an increase in families choosing to sustain online learning, it is important to discover how schools and homes can continue to partner together in support of student learning
Touched by Love: Spiritual Experience in Chinese Christian Conversion Narratives
No full textChristianity has become the religion of choice for a growing number of diasporic Chinese. This qualitative study examines the conversion narratives of first-generation Chinese converts to evangelical Protestant Christianity, exploring in particular the spiritual experiences that encouraged or confirmed their resolve to become Christians. Utilizing the method of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), twenty English-speaking participants were interviewed, mostly immigrants to the United States or the United Kingdom from China, including Hong Kong, or from Taiwan. The converts to Christianity in this study were in search of an intellectually plausible faith, and an overarching framework of meaning, purpose, and fullness for their lives, and were motivated as well by longings for community and belonging. Participants reported being profoundly “touched”—inexplicably moved—by the love extended to them by other Chinese Christians, and being transformed in wide-ranging and durable ways as a result. In their view, such love was qualitatively different from, and superior to, the more transactional relational dynamics with which they had been familiar. They inferred that it was “otherworldly,” and necessarily emanated from a real and unconditionally benevolent divine source. The study thus illuminates the spiritual dynamics that persist in Chinese Christian conversions, even in a secular age
