The Effects of Incorporating Educational Robotics in Mathematics Instruction
This literature review explores the effects of incorporating educational robotics into mathematics instruction on students\u27 problem-solving abilities, motivation, mathematical performance, computational thinking, and communication and collaboration skills. It investigates the impact of constructivist teaching methods on engaging students with robotics-based activities. The review highlights the positive influence of hands-on experiences and group collaboration using platforms like LEGO and Scratch. While this innovative approach shows promising outcomes, the review acknowledges challenges related to cost, time, space constraints, and the need for teacher professional development. These findings have significant implications for future research, pedagogical practices, and the transformative potential of educational robotics in promoting student-centered learning experiences
Advancing Student Achievement With Technology
This thesis identifies how teachers can manage the safe and responsible use of electronic technology resources in the classroom while influencing students to practice the same behaviors outside of school. A review of the literature using Self Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 2012) as a framework focuses on technology-based pedagogy, classroom management, and technology use at home. How effectively teachers manage technology in their classrooms can greatly determine the overall knowledge students retain. Technology can motivate students to engage in learning. Teachers are expected to be leaders in modeling the responsible use of new digital tools that can expand learning possibilities. The more teachers institute technology expectations in class, the more likely students will follow similar principles at home. Teachers and parents can impact students more by providing aligned expectations. All parties are responsible for intertwining technology with education standards including administration, teachers, parents, and students
Particle Discovery Lab for Education & Outreach
The Compact Muon Solenoid experiment (CMS) at the CERN Large Hadron Collider records proton-proton collision data in order to study the particles and forces that exist in very high energy conditions. CMS releases data to the public after several years of internal analysis. This data has a rich history of use for middle school or high school education, but is not widely used by college students in the US. Bethel students and I have built an intermediate-level undergraduate lab experience in which students reinforce physics learning objectives and learn statistical data analysis skills while discovering a particle. A short form of this exercise has been adapted for high school outreach events, including an immersive virtual reality world in which students can explore the CMS detector and extract data from several collision events. Does Face Recognition Correlate with Narcissism? A Replication
Prosopagnosia is a disorder that affects one\u27s ability to recognize the faces of other people, despite normal vision and memory. A recent study (Giacomin et al., 2022) suggested that face recognition ability is directly correlated with the degree to which someone has narcissistic personality traits (a self-centered and exaggerated sense of self-importance). If this is the case, it may provide clues as to why people with prosopagnosia have such limited ability to recognize others. In this study, we attempted to replicate Giacomin\u27s work using well-validated measures of face recognition ability. How Do Evangelical Christian Secondary Schools Approach Sex Education?
Numerous studies look at the impact of sex education programs in public schools in the United States, but there is a lack of research on how private Evangelical Christian schools approach the topic. This study aimed to explore the attitudes and experiences of students, staff, and parents about sex education in Evangelical Christian schools. Using a qualitative approach, focus group interviews were conducted with separate groups of students, staff, and parents at two different Evangelical Christian schools. The semi-structured interviews were recorded, transcribed, and coded. Themes emerged from the focus group interviews. The two Evangelical Christian schools in this study articulated clear beliefs and statements on sex and sexuality but sex education was often informal and teacher-dependent. Sex education resources and coverage of topics lacked depth and cohesion, which resulted in limited impact. Students, staff, and parents wanted more conversations in school on sex and sexuality but were concerned about how sex education could be delivered effectively. All stakeholder groups agreed that sex education should be taught in Christian schools. Respondents agreed that parents have the primary responsibility in the sex education of their children, but that the Christian school is a valued and trusted partner. In the end, each group believed that more time needed to be spent on sex education spread out across multiple years. The findings from this study showed students and parents were open to more sex education and described the need for a more formal approach to sex education that requires training for staff. A large-scale quantitative study of sex education practices in Christian schools would be beneficial to gain a broader perspective of what is happening across the country
Evaluation of a Unique Care Coordination and Transition Management Clinical Module
A two-year curriculum evaluation was undertaken to guide development of a unique clinical curricular module focused on care coordination and transition management. The module, in place in the junior curriculum since 2015, had been modified through the years in response to changes in faculty, clinical partners, and department resources. The COVID-19 pandemic significantly limited student field experiences, requiring development of existing and new on-campus simulated learning experiences. Three analytic processes were used to evaluate how teaching methods and resource utilization contributed to student achievement of learning outcomes. The results led faculty to reinitiate field experiences in home care and hospice settings and to schedule guest speakers to better prepare students for meeting the needs of patients living with chronic and complex health problems in the community.https://spark.bethel.edu/dayofscholarshipgallery/1003/thumbnail.jp
Participation in the Adoptive Kinship Network Contact: Application for Adoption Competent Family Life Education
Family life educators (FLE) provide essential support for many complex family forms. Supporting the complexity unique to adoptive families requires specific understanding of the adoption kinship network (AKN: birth family, the adopted person, and adoptive family network). As adoptive and birth families negotiate contact over the life cycle, the possible relationships within the AKN are numerous. Using data from the Minnesota-Texas Adoption Research Project (MTARP: Grotevant, McRoy, Wrobel, & Ayers-Lopez, 2013), a 30 year longitudinal study of contact in adoptive families, cross-network contact in the AKN at three separate stages of development will be described. Cross-network contact is defined as contact between any member of the adoptive family and any member of the birth family. Case examples describing profiles of cross-network contact, including changes in birth family and adoptive family participation, across different stages of adopted person development will be presented. Seeing the Invisible: Projects on Flow Imaging from the Fluid Mechanics Lab
Shadowgraph and schlieren imaging are popular flow visualization techniques because, despite the straightforward setup and reliance on very simple geometrical optics principles, they provide powerful methods for capturing high-quality images of what would otherwise be invisible flow phenomena. Application of these methods along with high-speed video recording can reveal detailed pictures of fast flow events that may last for just a fraction of a millisecond. These techniques are being utilized in the Bethel Fluid Mechanics lab course (PHY423/ENR423) and in a number of student-faculty research projects. Factors Impacting Racial Minority Student Achievement
This paper researches factors impacting racial minority student achievement. The question “What factors impact racial minority student achievement?” was used to find published research articles. While the research does not specifically state that racial minority students are the only ones impacted, additional research was done to support these factors and explain how they are impacted to a greater degree than their white counterparts. Six factors were identified as prominent influences on racial minority student achievement: peers and friends, school culture and staff within the building, social media, family and culture, socioeconomic status, and intrinsic and other self-related factors. Research determined that these factors profoundly affected racial minority students\u27 achievement both positively and negatively. These results demonstrate that a student’s efforts, beliefs, and intentions dictate whether or not they succeed academically
Restored Soul: A Selection of Poetry
