No full textAcademic libraries have changed and evolved, yet they remain a staple of academic life, supporting students by providing them with the space and materials they need to succeed in their courses. Beyond housing physical collections, library space holds a special significance and fulfills a vital need in the community to which it belongs. In studying Library as Place, three qualities of libraries emerge that are also deeply rooted in the Christian tradition: scholarship, silence, and hospitality. An exploration of these traditions demonstrates how libraries provide spaces for these practices to flourish
English Language Teacher Resources for Supporting English Learners in Low Enrollment Settings
No full textMany educators and stakeholders recognize that our English learners (ELs) need quality support. However, districts and communities, especially with a low enrollment of ELs, lack the resources necessary to fully meet the needs of ELs. There are many variables to consider when putting together a Language Instruction Educational Program (LIEP) for students who are in the process of learning English as an additional language. At the center of EL programming, high-quality, researched-based curriculum is of utmost importance, as well as adequate training and mainstream curricular implementation of English language development structure by both EL and mainstream content staff. Also included is a resource guide for EL teachers with the hope that other EL teachers who lack access to resources will be able to utilize and build their capacity of supporting ELs, especially in low enrollment settings

Modern society has welcomed technologies like social media and video games with open arms, although there is a small group of people who are highly against any use of electronic technology. What would be the best outcome for humanity? To rely on our modern devices or to keep the technology at bay? Research has shown support for both arguments. There are legitimate reasons why humans should interact with technology like improvement of brain functioning and heightened decision making (Reynaldo et al., 2021). However, an excessive amount of time on digital technology can cause great harm to the person involved. Addiction, substance abuse, self-care, self-worth, and social problems can all run rampant with overuse of technology (Brooks, 2015; Sissiqui & Singh, 2016). With either positive or negative effects, society must look out for their youth if the society wants to continue developing. Adolescents are greatly affected by technology especially when it comes to academic performance. Helping students become prominent members of society is most teachers\u27 main goal. One teacher may think helping a student would be to give them resources so they can become knowledgeable on digital technologies, which will help their brain develop, while other teachers may think limiting their students’ interactions with technology will help students gain better mental health and habits. Either way, society should not look at digital technology as good or bad, but instead a fluidity that can be both at the same time (Gentile, 2011)

RAW 264.7 Cells Treated with Helichrysum Essential Oil Experience Inhibition of Activation by IFN-γ and LPS
No full textIn response to excessive cell signaling due to toxicity or harm, cells induce inflammation in the body as a defense mechanism. This inflammation plays a pivotal role in various pathological conditions, ranging from chronic diseases to acute injuries and bug bites. One means of treating inflammation being studied is the use of essential oil and concentrated plant derivatives. Helichrysum essential oil (HEO) is one such oil that has gained attention for its potential anti-inflammatory properties. In our research, we investigate the effects of HEO on inflammation using RAW 264.7 cells as a model for studying macrophage-mediated inflammatory responses. We hypothesize that that the therapeutic introduction of HEO inhibits inflammation as demonstrated in the state of the cell’s size, protein fold change, oxygen consumption, and presence of inflammatory signals. The results could offer valuable insights into the therapeutic potential of HEO and contribute to the development of novel treatments for inflammatory disorders

By studying the effects of CEO modulator on macrophages, we will be able to contribute to the research that has been done that has sought to establish this essential oil as an effective anti-inflammatory agent for medical treatment. Finding safe and effective drugs to treat inflammatory diseases is a pressing issue in public health today, since many drugs that are available have adverse long-term effects
Embracing Diversity: Insights from ACR Homes Experience
No full textLast semester, I had the opportunity to work as a direct care professional at ACR Homes. ACR provides residential support for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities. This provided me with training on medications, up-to-date CPR and first aid, and much more. This helped me to further my knowledge in both healthcare and Biological Sciences. Working with individuals with disabilities has been such a blessing for me to see. With such an underrepresented part of healthcare, I feel as though God had led me to that position

Interventive Strategies to Reduce Perineal Laceration in Birthing People: An Integrative Review
Get PDFIntroduction: Perineal and vaginal lacerations are one of the most prevalent complications of vaginal birth. Third- and fourth-degree/severe lacerations put a woman at risk for bleeding, infection, chronic pain, sexual dysfunction and dyspareunia, pelvic and perineal pain, and urinary and fecal incontinence. The purpose of this review was to anthologize recent, applicable findings in order to equip maternal care providers with evidence-based recommendations for interventions that preserve perineal integrity. Methods: This integrative review utilized four databases to search for studies published between 2014-2024 that researched strategies for reducing perineal trauma during labor and birth. Using Covidence to aid in screening, 1728 articles were narrowed down to the final 33 that met full inclusion criteria for analysis. Results: Cost-effective and efficacious interventions in reducing severe lacerations included warm compress use and perineal massage, hands-on maneuvers such as Couder’s, the Finnish maneuver, and modified Ritgen’s maneuver. The presence of a second experienced midwife at delivery was determined as effective, as well as use of a perineal protection device. Open glottis vocalization during birth was related to decreased incidence of severe tears while assuming different positions during birth were related to varying grades of resulting tears; flexible sacrum positions were related to less incidence of severe tears in the perineum. No significant findings differed between land versus water birth, delayed versus immediate pushing and patient-led versus coached pushing in the nulliparous woman. Discussion: Though the overall findings are mixed, there was consistency in allowing women to move during labor to facilitate fetal rotation. Flexed sacrum positioning during birth, along with maternal vocalization should be encouraged. Applying a warm compress during the second stage and perineal massage are inexpensive and effective interventions a delivering provider can implement in an effort to protect the perineum. Other studied interventions should be considered on an individual basis in a shared decision-making approach
Provider-Led Interventions to Reduce Congenital Cytomegalovirus (cCMV)
Get PDFIntroduction: Congenital CMV can cause miscarriage, stillbirth, growth restriction, neurodevelopmental delay, and hearing/vision impairment. There is limited education on risk reduction and treatment options for infection. This integrative review examined original research to better inform providers on methods for reducing cCMV. Methods: Database searching in CINAHL, PubMed, and Nursing and Allied Health in January 2024 produced an initial 417 initial studies. Final extraction included 34 studies that met screening criteria for analysis. Results: Three relevant themes emerged: education, screening, and treatment. Messaging and education focused on risk reduction as most effective for behavioral changes. Maternal screening did not predict cCMV in low-risk women, it did diagnose early stage infections. Treatment closer to infection had better outcomes. The two main treatment options were 8g Valacyclovir daily and IV infusions of HIG-CMV at either 100 or 200 mu/kg. Valacyclovir research showed positive reductions in cCMV without adverse effects. While HIG-CMV using 100 mu/kg monthly did not see reductions in transmission and neonatal sequelae, 200 mu/kg weekly did see reductions in both. Discussion: cCMV is a serious health issue that is largely unknown and untreated. Education in a variety of forms is effective at increasing provider knowledge and reducing infection rates by influencing maternal behavior. Screening is complicated but is a tool to identify those at highest risk and diagnose infections to allow for treatment. Valacyclovir is a promising treatment option for infected mothers, as is 200 mg of IV infusion HIG therapy. It is time for providers to take the lead in educating themselves and their patients on adoptable prevention behaviors, and to use screening and possible treatment options as tools in reducing this disease
