    Impact of Gamification in High School Business Courses

    Gamification has been a tool used to increase students\u27 motivation and engagement. A substantial amount of research has been done on the use of gamification and game-based learning in higher education business courses. With the integration of technology in classrooms today, gamification has the ability to provide educators with a tool to supplement students\u27 learning through a variety of gamified applications. While there are positive and negative aspects presented with using gamification in the classroom, gamification allows for students to further develop their perceived learning, implement critical thinking skills, and motivate students to take ownership of their learning. Educators are responsible for educating themselves on the strategies for the use of gamification in the classroom and how it can be used effectively for students to demonstrate knowledge of the course\u27s learning outcomes. The research is rather limited on the use of gamification and game-based learning in high school business courses, however, the research that exists mentions that students in those business courses found gamification to help improve their knowledge of the subject material and motivated them to engage more in their learning experience. In essence, when gamification is effectively employed by educators, students reap positive benefits that improve their learning experience

    In Pregnant Individuals, Do Warm Compress Compared to Perineal Massage Reduce Rates of Second-Degree or Greater Lacerations During Vaginal Delivery?

    Introduction: Perineal lacerations are a common occurrence during vaginal birth. While there are many proposed methods to protect the perineum from tearing, there is no consensus on the best method to use. The aim of this review is to compare the efficacy of perineal massage versus warm compress in preventing vaginal lacerations greater than the second degree. Methods: Studies were gathered from a variety of databases and filtered through Covidence. The inclusion criteria consisted of research around primipara, multipara, full-term pregnancy, articles within ten years of publication which were available in English language, birth in any setting, second stage perineal massage, and warm compress. Out of 1187 total articles, 18 studies remained. Results: Six articles researched perineal massage; all found decreased laceration rates. However, two articles found that there was a slight increase in second-degree or higher lacerations. Seven articles researched warm compresses–all found that using warm compresses decreases the rate of lacerations. Five articles used a combination of both interventions. Two articles found that perineal massage groups had better outcomes than warm compress groups. Three articles did not find a significant difference between interventions. Discussion: In conclusion, the authors of this review found that warm compresses may reduce the rate and degree of lacerations slightly more than perineal massage. However, overall there is insufficient data to make a strong recommendation due to low level quality of evidence. Both are viable and low cost options to improve perineal integrity, and the decision should be made based on shared decision making with the patient

    Anti-immigrant Sentiment: The Role of Perceived Locus of Control and Sex

    This study explored the extent to which anti-immigrant sentiment can be predicted based on the variables of gender and perceived locus of control. In order to obtain a more representative sample, three countries (United States, Brazil, and Taiwan) were chosen for this study from the 2017-2020 World Values Survey (WVS) due to their varied geographical and racial and ethnic composition. Due to the important implications of anti-immigrant sentiment, this study sought to expand previous research, which has generally neglected to consider how locus of control and gender both may be significantly related to hostile attitudes toward immigrants. Results of a MANOVA suggest that the three countries differed significantly with respect to level of anti-immigrant sentiment, and thus were analyzed separately. The linear regression analysis showed that gender and locus of control did not significantly predict anti-immigrant sentiment. However, supplementary analyses using linear regression found that Socioeconomic Status (SES) was a significant predictor of anti-immigrant sentiment

    Spectral Characterization of High-Speed SERS Fluctuations

    The concept of plasmonic “hotspots” is central to the broad field of nanophotonics. In surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), hotspots can increase Raman scattering efficiency by orders of magnitude. Hotspot dimensions may range from a few nanometers down to the atomic scale and are able to generate SERS signals from single molecules. However, these single-molecule SERS signals often show significant fluctuations, and the concept of intense, localized, yet static hotspots has come into question. Recent experiments have shown these SERS intensity fluctuations (SIFs) to occur over an extremely wide range of timescales, from seconds to micro-seconds, due to the various physical mechanisms causing SERS and the dynamic nature of light−matter interaction at the nanoscale. The underlying source of single-molecule SERS fluctuations is therefore likely to be a complex interplay of several different effects at different timescales. A high-speed acquisition system that captures a full SERS spectrum with microsecond time resolution can therefore provide information about these dynamic processes. Here, we show an acquisition system that collects at a rate of 100,000 SERS spectra per second, allowing high-speed characterization. We find that while each individual SIF event will enhance a different portion of the SERS spectrum, including a single peak, over 10s to 100s of microseconds, the SIF events overall do not favor one region of the spectrum over another. These high-speed SIF events can therefore occur with relatively equal probability over a broad spectral range, covering both the anti-Stokes and the Stokes sides of the spectrum, sometimes leading to anomalously large anti-Stokes peaks. This indicates that both temporally and spectrally transient hotspots drive the SERS fluctuations at high speeds

    The effect of targeted heart rate maximum percentages on cognitive function in college-aged adults

    Previous research has displayed per the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), an increased heart rate (HR) is associated with higher cognitive function due to hormone and neurotransmitter release, specifically through the release of norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (EPI). The purpose of the present study is to examine if cognitive function defined by the Purdue PegBoard (PPB) is affected by targeted increases of HR maximum, as increased HR is stimulated by the SNS. METHODS: Twenty- eight healthy participants ages 20.82 ± 1.10 were recruited via email and enrolled in this study. Participants\u27 targeted maximum HR was determined with the maximum HR equation (220-age), subsequently identifying the 50, 70 and 90% max HR values. Participants were additionally familiarized with the cycle ergometer procedure and assembly protocols on the PPB. Participants were instructed to perform the cycle ergometer procedure to activate the threshold target HR. Once a participant attained the prescribed HR, they were immediately instructed to perform the PPB protocol. Participants were allotted 30-seconds to complete as many sets as time allowed. This procedure was repeated for each target HR interval. RESULTS: A One-Way ANOVA did not display a significant difference in HR intensity and cognitive function in study participants, (F = 0.593, p = 0.555). CONCLUSION: After completing this study under the given conditions, there was no significance between targeted increases in HR and increased cognitive function as defined by the PPB. Within the parameters of this study, EPI and NE may not significantly contribute to cognitive function in accordance with increased HR. Rather, further research could be conducted to further investigate the effects of estrogen and testosterone release, per the SNS, on cognition

    More Than Just a Location: Redefining Inclusion in Special Education

    Inclusive education is widely acknowledged as a beneficial opportunity for students with disabilities. However, the location of the instruction is only one factor in creating inclusive opportunities for all students. For education to be truly inclusive, appropriate support to foster participation and learning within the chosen setting must also be provided. Despite international acceptance of this ideal, implementation of inclusive education is challenging. Through a review of current research, I will examine how current inclusion practices in special education impact the social-emotional development and academic achievement of students with diverse learning needs. Advantages of inclusive education include increased access to peers and the high standards of the general education curriculum. However, when the general education setting is not conducive to differentiation, accommodations, and modifications, students with disabilities may be at a disadvantage. Essential elements of inclusive education include sufficient teacher preparation, adequate time for collaboration between all parties, and school-wide multi-tiered systems of support. Barriers to inclusive education include the lack of relevant research, insufficient teacher training, mandated use of curriculum with a focus on maximizing standardized testing achievement, and incompatible school-wide practices. Researchers have identified associations between implementation of the essential element of inclusive education and increased student academic achievement and social-emotional development

    This thesis will explore the significance of visual arts education in the academic and personal development of students during their school years. It aims to define the critical role of visual arts education in enhancing students\u27 academic journeys and overall well-being. It addresses two driving questions: How does visual arts education support students\u27 overall academic achievement? How does visual arts education contribute to students\u27 social and emotional mental wellness throughout their academic years? This is done through the review of existing research and literature on these subjects. This thesis begins by defining visual arts education and its impact on early learners, highlighting improvements in academic performance. It then explores how visual arts education fosters self-esteem and intrinsic motivation, with a focus on grading and assessment practices. Lastly, this thesis examines the role of art as a universal language, its influence on community engagement, and its encouragement of creativity and divergent thinking. The nurturing and development of the whole child has become increasingly important. This thesis examines how visual arts education can serve as a vital platform for achieving this goal

    The Formation and Impacts of Student Self-Efficacy in the Secondary Science Classroom

    Student self-efficacy is a student’s belief that they can perform the tasks required to be successful in an academic setting. The focus of this research is how those beliefs are formed, how they impact student performance, and how teachers can increase student self-efficacy in the classroom. Self-efficacy foundations are examined as well as the impact positive self-efficacy beliefs have on student behavior and achievement. Educational practices that increase student self-efficacy are also summarized. A guide to implementing these strategies in the science classroom with an example is given, and connections to other research and future considerations are discussed
