    Enhancing Learning Through Sign Language

    Developmental disabilities, such as cognitive delays or autism, are often associated with challenges in verbal communication. These challenges can limit a student’s ability to engage and demonstrate understanding in academic settings. Identifying alternative forms of expression, such as manual sign language, can be crucial in promoting learning within special education environments. This paper explores research on the physical and mental skills involved in using manual sign language for communication, examines interventions that use sign language to enhance understanding and basic communication, and discusses the potential for generalizing sign language as a tool in academic and societal contexts

    From Teacher Attrition to Teacher Retention: The Role of School Principals

    This quantitative study explored the role of school principals as an intervention to the teacher shortage crisis in the United States. The shortage of teachers is not a new topic in public policy and research; however, the strategies set forth in prior literature have not yielded substantive change to this stubborn problem. Using data from the 2020–2021 National Teacher and Principal Survey, this study analyzed the relationship between the perceptions of early career teachers (within the first 5 years of teaching) about behaviors of their school principals and these teachers’ intentions to remain in the teaching profession. Specifically, this study examined teachers’ perceptions of five behaviors relating to communication, vision, feedback, support, and schoolwide discipline. The analysis showed that teachers who held favorable perceptions about their principals’ behaviors in all five areas had stronger long-term intentions about remaining in teaching than teachers who reported unfavorable perceptions. The study relied on burnout theory as a means to understanding teacher burnout, which contributes to teacher attrition and subsequent teacher shortages. The data demonstrated that school principals play a critical role in interrupting this cycle by engaging in communication, feedback, vision-casting, and student disciplinary practices that teachers perceive as supportive.     The Effects of Concussion History on Balance Performance in Collegiate Football Players

    PURPOSE: Sport-related concussions have been proven to damage both cerebral sensory and motor pathways. Disruption of information transmission leads to delays, or errors, in the brain’s ability to interpret, integrate, and execute signals relating to balance and coordination, thereby elevating the risk of subsequent injuries. Recent research has indicated that a concussion may lead to prolonged, subclinical disruptions in these sensorimotor pathways resulting in long-term impairments in both balance and athletic performance. This study aims to investigate whether a prior history of sport-related concussions impacts static and dynamic balance performance of collegiate football players. METHODS: 26 collegiate football players (21.2 + 1.7 years), both with (n=13) and without (n=13) a history of clinically diagnosed concussion, were recruited. Subjects completed an informed consent, a health history, and balance testing. The Y-balance test (YBT) was used for dynamic balance, including attention to the total number of errors scored, and the Balance Error Scoring Scale test (BESS), performed on the Biodex Biosway, for static balance. RESULTS: An independent t-test was run using SPSS V28 software for data analysis. No significant difference was found for the YBT composite scores between groups. However, anterior reach (p = 0.003) and the total number of errors (p = 0.036) revealed significance. As for the Biosway test, significance was found within composite scores between groups (p = 0.010), along with the individual test items of single leg stance with eyes closed (p =0.034) and tandem stance with eyes closed (p = 0.030). CONCLUSION: The results indicate that a history of sports-related concussion may have long-term implications on the ability to execute adequate neuromuscular control of the lower extremities with specific balance activities. The data represented with the anterior reach YBT and single leg/tandem stances of the BESS test implies that a diagnosed concussion may negatively impact sensorimotor functionality longer than clinicians may realize. Initial post-concussion balance assessment is a required component of the return-to-play process, however, the results from this study may indicate long-term balance assessment for athletes may be equally importan

    Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is one of the leading endocrine diseases in women; however, the pathophysiology of this disease is not well understood. People with PCOS often have increased serum androgen levels and a risk of metabolic diseases, including insulin resistance and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Using liver cells in vitro, we observed increased lipid storage in cells treated with testosterone as measured by both fluorescence microscopy and flow cytometry. In addition, liver cells treated with testosterone showed increased phosphorylation of proteins involved in signaling pathways, including endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), protein kinase B (PKB, also known as AKT), and glycogen synthase kinase-3 beta (GSK-3��. Exploring the pathways downstream of increased testosterone levels will help explain the hormonal and metabolic complications of PCOS

    Past research on this topic has primarily looked to examine the negative influence of sleep deprivation and irregular sleep patterns consistent with those diagnosed with the sleep disorder insomnia. Previous empirical testing has been conducted to decipher if individuals who experience significant sleep disturbances would score higher on a given ‘catastrophizing scale’. Our current research study looks to analyze participants on their levels of catastrophizing in other areas of their lives and look for a relationship in their perception of their ability to receive quality sleep
