    No full text

Assessment of ventilation in elderly care centres

    No full text
The users of Elderly Care Centres (ECC) often spend all their time inside the premises. Therefore, their exposure to poor indoor air quality (IAQ) is likely to affect their health. Ventilation is a recognized technique to improve IAQ which is expected to have a significant influence on building occupant´s health. The need for studies on the relation between building´s physical characteristics and the indoor environment in ECC led an interdisciplinary team of researchers to develop the project GERIA, funded by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). The project objectives are to study the physical and ventilation characteristics of the buildings, the indoor air quality and the elderly people health. As part of the project, 33 private institutions for social care, located in the urban area of Lisbon, were randomly selected and invited to participate. In every ECC the characteristics of the building were recorded in a survey and measurements of the indoor air temperature, relative humidity and CO2 concentration were carried out. Measurements were carried out at two rooms (at least). As the indoor air of these rooms was not affected by combustion appliances, CO2 emissions were considered as a surrogate marker of human body emissions. In a relevant number of cases it was possible to use indoor CO2 concentration to estimate the average ventilation rate based on tracer gas constant emission method (during occupancy period) and based on tracer gas decay method (when occupants left the rooms). It is concluded that 70% of the maximum CO2 concentration in rooms is above 1250 ppm. Furthermore, the estimated ventilation rate is below 0.4 h-1 in 30% of the rooms. Opening the windows and/or doors when leaving the room increases ventilation rate above 1.0 h-1 in 50% of the rooms. In this communication the impact of pollutants emitted by human breath in indoor environment of elderly cares and estimated ventilation rates will be studied, analysing the concentration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in sleeping rooms.6212pDED/NAICI201416 a 19 de Dezembr

How big data can enhance multi-utilities’ management?

    No full text
Water utilities sustainable management is nowadays a leading challenge in which data management and information analysis play a key role. Data generated is too many, moves too fast and is too diverse. As other cases of big-data, innovative information processing forms are needed to enhance organization’s management. AGS (Administração e Gestão de Sistemas de Salubridade, SA) is a multi-utility operator that manages 13 water utilities with long-term concession agreements. For water utilities, efficiency and effectiveness of systems’ management and its inherent quality of service require complex information that has been increasingly reinforced with legal obligations in developing infrastructure asset management (IAM) plans. These requirements added with reporting commitments with different entities led AGS to a step forward in data management. To support data supervision and advanced analytics AGS developed a technological tool – AGS platform. Based on big-data concepts and benchmarking principles this platform enables a complete vision of utilities and promotes different perspectives in systems’ performance and management. The present paper describes AGS approach to information analysis and the platform’s development process. Following IAM concerns and having the platform as support to evaluate Portuguese utilities’ data, a case study regarding the relation between rehabilitation investments and systems’ performance, in terms of non-revenue water, was analysed.8 pComunicação apresentada no World Water Congress 2014, IWA, Lisboa 21-26 de Setembro.DHA/NE

XIX e, designadamente, no séc. XX.

    No full text

During the last decades, private, governmental and non-profitable organizations have been developing information systems to monitor, alert and manage environment-related emergencies [1]. Platforms, such as flood emergency alert and warning systems [2], comprise an extensive network of sensors, a bundle of forecast simulations models, and decision-support modules that rely largely on a robust and reliable perception of the conditions of the physical monitoring environment. Sensors provide this insight of the real world, where the notion of continuous time and continuous values of implicated phenomena meet the computerized notion of discrete model of time and discrete estimation of the real data. Complex and powerful forecast systems are now able to predict water levels or to track storm events with low errors, but they depend on a continuous confirmation with data. Realtime monitoring data, such as surface water elevation, flow or precipitation depend solely on the sensor hardware deployed at the water bodies (oceans, river, lakes, etc…). The goal of this paper is to propose a framework to increase the validity of the information provided by these sensors.8 pp.DHA/GT

New natural hydraulic lime mortars – Physical and microstructural properties in different curing conditions

    No full text
The new version of EN 459-1 standard for building limes redefined the classes of hydraulic limes and made the producers reformulate or reclassify their natural hydraulic limes. This work evaluates the mechanical, physical and microstructural behavior of mortars formulated with a recently produced natural hydraulic lime NHL3.5 that conforms to EN 459-1, submitted to natural marine environment, humid and standardized conditions, and also the benefits and drawbacks of adding metakaolin in partial replacement of lime. Mortars with NHL3.5 present positive results at young ages. The metakaolin addition increases strength while decreasing the capillary water coefficient. The behavior in an aggressive marine environment seems promising. The authors wish to acknowledge the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) for the financial support under project METACAL (PTDC/ECM/100431/2008) and to the companies SECIL and IMERYS for the supply of NHL3.5 and metakaolin used in this work.78pp 378–38454DM/NMMConstruction and Building Material

Failure by overtopping of earth dams. Quantification of the discharge hydrograph

    No full text
Dam overtopping is one of the major causes for the failure of earth dams. The objectives of the present paper are the characterization of the breach evolution and the quantification of the breach hydrograph caused by dam overtopping. To meet these objectives an embankment dam laboratory model was led to fail by overtopping under hydraulic and geotechnical controlled conditions. The data presented concerns the hydrograph, calculated by indirect and direct methods. The key features of the hydrograph are discussed attending to the observed evolution of the failure event.ISBN 978-989-96479-2-3DHA/NRE201414 a 16 de abri
