Variance of intact rock strength determined by triaxial tests

    No full text
Given the results of triaxial tests, regressions are commonly used to evaluate the parameters of failure criteria that model intact rock strength, and to perform statistical inferences used to evaluate characteristic values defined in EC7. These inferences are only possible if the basic hypothesis underlying regression are followed, namely homoscedasticity (constant variance of the errors). This paper presents analyses of 23 sets of triaxial tests, starting by the evaluation of the regression parameters of the Mohr-Coulomb linear criterion and of the Hoek-Brown non-linear criterion, followed by carrying several statistical tests to check the homoscedasticity null hypothesis of independence between the variance of intact rock strength and the confining stress.10pDBB/NMM

    No full text

Alkali-Silica Reaction, ASR – Review on how to deal with ASR in concrete structures

    No full text
A significant number of problems related to concrete deterioration have been detected in large concrete structures in Portugal and worldwide, the leading cause being ASR. The importance of these structures, the number of for which ASR has already been identified or is very likely to be diagnosed in a near future, as well as the number of structures that are under or planned for construction, which may also come to develop ASR is why it is still nowadays a major concern and a complex problem. Therefore, a study is being conducted at LNEC to diminish the negative impact of ASR by increasing knowledge on how to reliably control ASR in new structures and on how to properly assess its extent and potential for future development in the existing ones, so that the risks to structural integrity and need for mitigation/remediation actions can be properly assessed. This paper presents methodologies, based on state-of-the-knowledge collected on that study, which may be used by construction industry stakeholders in the prevention of ASR in new concrete structures and on ASR diagnosis and prognosis in existing concrete structures.6pDM/NBP

Prediction of bending performance of old timber beams by combining information from different methods

    No full text
Na assessment procedure for bending performance of timber beams on-site by combining informationfrom diferente non or semi-destructive methods is presented and discussed. Different methods were applied (core drilling, pilodyn, ultrasounds and stress waves) to old timber beams removed from a building given the fact after visual inspection it was decided that they will no longer able to comply to the limit state requirements. The study comprised the visual grading of the beams and afterwards a proof-load test was applied to them for obtaining the modulus of elasticity. The information obtained from the different tests are combined using meta-analysis and probabilistic methods and the results obtained solely from visual grading or by the application of a proposed coherent procedure (combining all data) compared. The results showed that SDT/NDT methods can be useful for the confirmation of visual strength grading results. Thus a more reliable structural analysis can be performed and a more informed decision yaken about the serviceability state of the structure.513-522 ppThe authors acknowledgments to the Portuguese company Inwood - Soluções de Madeira S.A. for providing the beams for testing at LNECDE/NC

Crushing and oedometric deformation of rockfill using DEM

    No full text
The behavior of rockfill may be simulated using the discrete element (particle) modelling. Although its main advantage consists of not requiring the formulation of complex constitutive models, it requires extensive calibration to determine the particle–contact parameters in order to predict the macro-scale response. In this paper, the authors performed computer simulations of crushable agglomerates using distinct element method (DEM). These agglomerates were made by bonding elementary spheres using a stamp logic, in order to provide a statistical variability to the strength and shape of the agglomerates, similar to that of a real rockfill. This method was able to match the Weibull statistics of the crushing strength of real rockfill grains, when tested individually between parallel platens. Then, oedometric tests were simulated and compared quantitatively with the testing data. Several aspects were discussed, particularly, the effect of the loading rate on the position of the compression curves regarding the practical question of performing DEM simulations as fast as possible without creating inertia errors. They are also discussed in relation to characterising crushable rockfill during oedometric compression. These simulations of crushable agglomerates using DEM provides valuable insights concerning the micromechanical origins of rockfill compressibility. Once the model was calibrated through the results of tests performed, it can be used as a virtual laboratory to explore several aspects, as size and shape of the particle’s sample. The model was capable of reproducing short-term compressibility (oedometer) tests, but the simulation of long-term compressibility and creep or secondary coefficient are still under development. The model also provided information on the evolution of the grain size distribution during loading of the specimen.20pDG/NGO

Comprehensive analysis of the concrete deformability test results of portuguese large dams

    No full text
Structural material characterization through testing is a common practice in structures such as large-span bridges, nuclear power stations, tall buildings and large dams, where the installed strains and stress take significant values. The collected data of composition and deformability test results of the concrete of several Portuguese dams, built since 1951, properly treated, allowed the establishment of correlations between the composition and the deformability properties of the full-mixed and the wet-screened concrete used in dam construction. Taking into account the laboratory and in situ testing, correlations between some composition elements and the experimental test results and between creep coefficients of wet-screened and full-mixed concrete were obtained.12pDBB/N

The Brazilian national dam safety information system (SNISB)

    No full text
Many countries have enacted dam safety laws at the national level and have been applying them to dam safety management activities. In Brazil, the first Dam Safety Regulation was published in 2010. The National Dam Safety Information System (SNISB, by its Portuguese acronym) is an instrument of the Brazilian National Dam Safety Policy (PNSB), which was established by the Federal Law nº 12.334/2010. The SNISB consists of a system for collecting, processing, storing and recovering information related to dams under construction, in operation and decommissioned. The main purpose of SNISB is to inform about the safety conditions of regulated dams across the country and to allow the follow-up of the advances in the implementation of the PNSB. Its basic principles are the decentralization of data and information production and input; unified coordination of the system and access to information guaranteed to whole society. The main features of SNISB include the support for implementing the PNSB; the interaction with existing systems at ANA; the exchange of information with dam owners; the follow up activities from regulators and the support for the production of the annual Dam Safety Report. The responsibility for keeping the information available in SNISB system belongs to the regulating entities, either federal or state, which are responsible for ensuring that dam owners comply with the dam safety regulations. Dam owners will be the main source of information to the system. Besides being a federal regulating agency, the National Water Agency (ANA) is also the system manager.DBB/N

Effects of geographical and dietary variation on the symbiotic flagellate protists communities of the subterranean termite Reticulitermes grassei Clément

    No full text
Despite their importance on diverse ecosystems, termites may also be considered severe pests of wood in service, and also as agricultural and forestry pests. Subterranean termites’ ability to digest lignocellulose relies not only on their digestive tract physiology, but also on the symbiotic relationships established with flagellate protists and bacteria. In this tripartite lignocellulolytic system, the termite contribute with endogenous cellulases and mechanical processing, flagellate protists phagocyte the wood particles and digest them, and prokaryotes have, among others, an important role in maintaining the physical-chemical equilibrium inside the termite hindgut. The flagellate protist community living inside the termites is rather diverse, as there is a strong division of labour among them to accomplish the intricate process of lignocellulose digestion. The objectives of this work were to: 1) investigate the changes in flagellate protists communities of the termite Reticulitermes grassei in different locations; 2) test the possible effect of different laboratorial diets on diversity and abundance of the flagellate protists. R. grassei termites were captured in four different locations (Évora, Faial Island, Leiria and Sesimbra), in Portugal, and their symbiotic flagellate protist community diversity and abundance was evaluated. Termites belonging to the same colony were submitted to six different diets (natural diet, pine wood, European beech, thermally modified beech, cellulose and starvation) and after the trials their flagellate protist community was also evaluated. The differences between termite colonies from different locations may not be denied, although not considered to be significant. Similar flagellate protists communities were found on non-treated sound woods, while cellulose fed and starving termites had significantly different communities. The flagellate protists community of untreated beech and thermally modified beech fed termites were considered to be significantly different, with three morphotypes missing in the treated wood fed termites. Although the effects of geographical location were not considered significant, the laboratory diets caused major adaptations of the flagellate protists communities. The termite symbiotic flagellate protists community is a dynamic assemblage able to adapt to different conditions and diets.9pDE/NC

3D Analysis of Montesinho CFRD using Code-Aster FEM program

    No full text
This paper describes the setup of a finite element method (FEM) model for the three dimensional simulation of the construction of a concrete face rockfill dam and filling of the its reservoir using the Code-Aster code. The prototype of the study is the 36.5 m high Montesinho dam, located in the north of Portugal near the Spain border, witch is finishing its construction, at the time of the paper writing. The dam is located in the Sabor river in the Montesinho Natural Reserve and it is a concrete face rockfill dam. Its main purpose is to provide water supply to Bragança town reinforcing the current reserve of the Serra Serrada dam located 3 km west of Montesinho, which is not sufficient to supply Bragança during a normal summer. Due to the fact that the dam is located in Montesinho Natural Reserve, which is a very important and sensitive ecological reserve, very special measures has been taken by the dam owner – ATMAD (Águas de Trás-os- Montes e Alto Douro) to minimize the ecological impacts on the environment. Code-Aster is a general purpose FEM software package, developed by Eléctricité de France (EDF) during many years, for the expertise and the maintenance of EDF's power plants and electrical networks. In 2001 it was decided by EDF to release Code-Aster to the public under the GNU General Public License. Since that it has been under constant development making it more capable do address a wide range of phenomena. Code-Aster is written in Fortran and Python and has more than 1.5 million lines of code. In this study, a finite element procedure was developed to simulate the construction process of the dam and its first filling. To model the behaviour of the rockfill material a elastic model with a simple Drucker-Prager model was used. This is a first approach to further developments. The model parameters were calibrated by large-scale triaxial tests performed on materials used in the dam. The step-by-step construction followed by subsequent impounding of the reservoir was simulated in the numerical procedure. The numerical results agree well with in situ monitoring records of dam settlements, indicating that the three-dimensional finite element procedure applied here can be used to evaluate the deformation of CFRDs.13pDG/NGO
