Stability formula and failure probability analysis of wave-dissipating blocks considering wave breaking
The effects ofwave steepness andwave breaking on the stability of wave-dissipating blocks placed on caisson breakwaters are examined by hydraulic experiments under conditions with and without wave breaking. It is confirmed that there is a clear dependence of the block stability on the wave steepness through the wave-breaking type, such as plunging and spilling breakers. The stability parameter in the
spilling breaker case is larger than that in the plunging breaker case. For non-breaking wave conditions, there is no effect of the wave steepness. An empirical stability formula is proposed taking into account the effects of the wave steepness and the wave-breaking type. Finally, by using the stability formula, failure probabilities of the wave-dissipating blocks having a nominal diameter are evaluated by the first-order
reliability method of the Level II reliability analysis.45-54ppVol. 1(1)DHA/NPEJournal of Ocean Engineering and Marine Energ
Innovation results of IAM planning in urban water services
The requirement to provide continuously the urban water services while infrastructures are ageing, impose the need for increasingly sustainable infrastructure asset management (IAM). To achieve and maintain the adequate levels of service, the AWARE-P IAM methodology has been applied in collaborative projects launched by the National Civil Engineering Laboratory (LNEC), in partnership with IST (Technical University of Lisbon), Addition (software company) and several water utilities. The objective of these projects is to support urban water utilities in the development, implementation and maintenance of IAM plans. To guarantee the success of IAM planning, following the AWARE-P IAM methodology, utilities are required to: consider that the infrastructure has system behaviour and lifespan is indefinite and guarantee the full-alignment of IAM planning with organisation objectives. By analysing the strategic and tactical plans of participating utilities, the proposed methodology principles are discussed and supported. The main innovation results from the implementation of IAM planning are also presented and discussed, including the challenges of setting up an IAM process, together with the major benefits and drawbacks that come up when developing IAM plans. The results were demonstrated by the effective implementation of 16 strategic and 13 tactical IAM plans by the participating utilities.8pComunicação apresentada na conferência LESAM 2015, IWA, Yokohama, Japan, 17-19 NovembroDHA/NE

WIDGET is an ongoing European Commission FP7 project aiming at improved water efficiencies using novel ICT technologies for integrated supply-demand side management, focusing on an integrated approach to water resources management. The project contributes to advance knowledge about smart metering in order to develop novel, robust and cost-effective ICT tools for both water utilities and consumers. Within the project, a set of relevant applications derived from smart metering real-time data was identified, characterized and implemented in a software prototype. This prototype is a critical asset that must be evaluated to ensure its compliance with the requirements specified during system analysis and design and to verify its acceptance according to the end users’ needs. The prototype evaluation followed the software engineering best practices, through a set of software tests with close collaboration between consumers, utility stakeholders and software developers. Once individual components (data management and analytical) have passed unit testing, integrated tests took place. The first phase of integrated tests used off-line historical smart metering data as opposed to the second phase (on-line testing) that uses near real-time data. This paper presents the standardized method designed in the project to carry out the off-line testing. The off-line testing method is based on a test scenario/test case approach and includes functional (i.e., tests to verify if functional requirements are met) and non-functional testing (i.e., tests to verify the quality of the software in terms of usability, security or compatibility, for example). For each evaluated application, test scenarios were designed as well as the corresponding test cases (in total, more than 50 test scenarios and 90 test cases). Success criteria for determining whether an observed behaviour of the system is correct and key performance indicators (KPI) to assess the achievement of success criteria were also defined for each test case step. This paper also presents results of the method´s application, which included collecting historical data from a full-scale case study, feeding this data to the prototype, analysing the results and evaluating KPI in order to identify corrections and improvements.7 p.Proceedings of the 36th IAHR World Congress . Influence of coastal structures in velocity fields and wave height
The behaviour of a coastal structure depends on the nearshore hydrodynamics which is
dependent from waves and their interaction with the structure. The knowledge of the wave transformation
and breaking characteristics close to coastal structures becomes crucial for understanding the physical
processes that are involved and to the design of those coastal structures. Physical models and laboratory
experiments are important tools for a better knowledge and characterization of these phenomena. In this
work, wave flume tests were performed to analyse the wave hydrodynamics in the vicinity of a structure,
constructed with a typical slope of a rubble-mound breakwater. We measured the free surface elevation
and velocities by means of resistive probes and Acoustic Doppler Velocimetry. The results enable the
identification of complex phenomena in velocity field and several changes in the velocity field and wave
height caused by set-up, reflexion and wave breaking due to the presence of the structure. The increase of
three-dimensional effects in the vicinity of the structure was also verified. The reliable experimental data
could be used to numerical models data validation.196-206ppDHA/NP
Thermal analysis of concrete dams during construction phase
This paper reports a case study of the thermal analysis of a concrete dam
during its construction phase. The thermo-chemical problem is solved using a heat
transfer model. In the absence of specific adiabatic calorimetric tests of the concrete, an
exponential function was calibrated by the best fitting of estimated heat of hydration at
the ages of 3, 7 and 28 days. The predicted temperatures obtained from the code are
compared with the actual temperatures measured in situ by the monitoring system
installed in the dam.11pDBB/N
Origin, early history and technology of the blue pigment in azulejos
A few years ago I supervised an MSc dissertation on the blue cobalt pigment in Portuguese glazed tiles (azulejos). Looking for sources on the history of the cobalt pigment in Europe, I was directed to two papers published in German and one (unpublished) in Dutch. Those were:
Beiträge zur Geschichte der Kobaltfarbe und ihre Verwendung in der Keramik (Contributions to the history of the cobalt colour and its use in ceramics) by Josef Horschik, an article originally published in Keramos nr. 85, pp. 119-142, 1979;
Das Sächsische Blaufarbenwesen und der Handel mit Kobaltfarben – nach Unterlagen der Bücherei der Bergakademie Freiberg (The Saxony blue pigment and the trade in the cobalt colour - according to documents in the library of the Bergakademie of Freiberg) by Peter Hammer, a communication to the VII Int. Symp. ‘Cultural Heritage in Geosciences’. Scripta Geol. Spec. Issue 4, Winkler Prins & Donovan, 2004; and
Zaans Blauw - van zaffer tot smalt naar ultramarijn (Zaan Blue - from zaffre to smalt to ultramarine) by Martin E. de Gruijl (written after 1993 and presumed unpublished).
I translated the relevant parts of the papers for the benefice of the student and, finding in them information that was new to me, kept in mind that I would one day write down an abstract of the contents that might help other researchers to source historic and technical information on the pigment so famously used in Portuguese azulejos.
The present text includes selected information abridged from those valuable texts to tell the whole story with incompatibilities between two of them critically assessed and edited, complemented with other information to encompass the relevant period for the pre-industrial production of azulejos in Portugal. A number of personal comments are added, particularly in the conclusive chapter.357-375pp.Trabalho realizado ao abrigo do projecto 0202/111/19014 (infraestrutura de investigação IPERION-CH.pt).Volume únicoDM/NBPCProceedings of the International Conference Glazed Ceramics in Architectural Heritage (GlazeArch 2015
Jorge Colaço, um artista multifacetado. Estudo e caracterização das técnicas de pintura em azulejo
Jorge Colaço is a Portuguese painter who started his artistic career as painter, oil painting on canvas and making cartoons for newspapers. In the early twentieth century, due to curiosity and interest in tiles, he devoted himself to tile painting.
The vastness and the quality of his artwork (tile and frame panels) required mastery and accuracy in drawing and painting, but also a developed knowledge of the ceramic techniques, which the artist acquired in the factories where he worked: Sacavém Factory (Fábrica de Sacavém) and Lusitânia Factory (Fábrica Cerâmica Lusitânia).
In the context of the inventory and identification of his artistic creation we highlight the conservation issues. Towards a deeper understanding of these problems it was necessary to corroborate by laboratorial analysis the information provided by written and oral sources about the techniques he once used.
For the analytic part of this research we were limited by the samples made available that were nonetheless considered sufficient to draw conclusions: two samples of indoor polychrome panels from Casa do Alentejo in Lisbon, painted while he worked at the Sacavém Factory; and one sample retrieved from the outdoor panels that line the façade of the Santo Ildefonso Church, in Oporto, painted while at the Lusitânia Factory.91-110pp.Abstract in English; full text in Portuguese.
