    Do Voter ID Requirements Impact Voter Turnout in Minnesota and Wisconsin?

    After the 2020 General Election there was wide disagreement over the process of how elections are administrated specifically related to voter ID laws. Prior research that attempts to answer the question has mixed results and there has been controversy over how to approach the research. The use of demographic data from the American Community Survey, turnout data from the Minnesota Secretary of State office, and the Wisconsin Election Commission. I made use of different statistical tests to evaluate if there was a connection between voter ID and voter turnout. Preliminary results are mixed for the relation between voter ID and voter turnout. Initial conclusion is that there is no clear evidence of voter ID laws impacting voter turnout

    Abiotic Factors Effect on Summertime Fish Sampling

    Fish surveys are vital in understanding various information about a fishery. Surveys lay the groundwork to how an agency views the status of the fishery, are used to set appropriate regulations, and manage stocking. Understanding which areas of a fishery holds the greatest density of fish is key to achieving the most accurate sample that reflects the fishery. The objective of this study was to track fish densities throughout the summer of 2021 and establish if there is a relationship between high fish density locations and specific water column characteristics. Fish density, temperature, and dissolved oxygen were measured bimonthly at various depths on St. Olaf Lake. Fish were most abundant in Late May through early June with 3-13 fishes per 3-m circumference, with highest densities found in 0.5-3 m of water. Densities during mid-July ranged from 2-6 fishes per 3-m circumference with highest densities found in 1-3 m of water. Dissolved oxygen and temperature were stratified from 23 May 2021 until 23 October 2021. Dissolved oxygen was highest in the epilimnion and peaked at 11.90 mg/L on 23 May 2021. Dissolved oxygen was never present above 0.50 mg/L below 5 m after 6 June 2021 until lake turnover. Temperature peaked at 28.0° C on 4 July 2021. Hopefully, these results will help area fishery managers better understand trends in this lake

    Zebra Mussels Dreisenna polymorpha are one of the most well-known invasive species here in the United States. This species can take over watersheds very quickly, causing damage to both the ecosystem and man-made structures. The basic physical behavior of this species has been well documented, but the invasive North American Zebra Mussel is much more aggressive and therefore causes more damage in the Great Lakes region compared to its native waters. Genetic variation may be playing a very large role in how and why D. polymorpha is causing such large problems for stakeholders in the United States. This review cites both past and current literature in order to discover possible reasons why D. polymorpha is “mutating”

    Partisan Trust in Social Media: Who Trusts the News on Social Media and Who Does Not?

    Social Media has changed the way Americans and people around the world receive their news. This advancement in media has political scientists questioning who trusts the information they read on social media sites. The PEW Research Center provides excellent data from a public opinion survey they conducted in 2019. My analysis of the data found that found that the older generations (50 years and older) are more warry of the news they receive on social media. More specifically, the older Republicans have less trust than the other demographics. With President Trump’s Twitter account being permanently banned from the site in January of 2021, the trust of all Republicans has likely gone down further. My analysis also found that it is the younger Democrats that are trusting the news on social media the most

    Burbot Post-spawn Diet

    Burbots have become an increasingly popular game fish among anglers and have become a strong predator within the systems, consuming a wide variety of organisms. Therefore, the objective of this study was to compare male and female burbots diets post-spawn in a system. Burbots angled from Bad Medicine Lake were sacrificed and the stomach contents were observed, categorized by the lowest taxonomic key, and then weighed in grams. Percent by weight was calculated for each category of organisms and presented in a pie charts. In all three analyses, crustaceans were the main source of the diet structure at more than 50%. This leads to a conclusion that there are no notable differences between male and female Burbot diets post-spawn

    The Financial Facet to Sino-African Cooperation: Analyzing Potential Motivations Behind Chinese Investment in African Countries

    China’s reputation transitioned from political isolation throughout the twentieth century to international influence in the twenty-first century. We see this in the continent of Africa, especially, where multiple countries experience political and economic hardships. Today, China invests in African countries to alleviate these hardships and strengthen foreign relations. Some scholars contend that much of China’s approach to foreign direct investment (FDI) in Africa stems from China’s domestic interests, while other scholars contend it is more about relationship-building. Taking note that China does both, I ask which aspect to Sino-African relations primarily motivates Chinese lending in Africa. To analyze this question, I utilize data from the China-Africa Research Initiative (CARI) at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies by analyzing levels of Chinese lending within all recipient sectors in the continent. Results suggest economic incentives playing a more significant role in Chinese lending than political motives or African countries’ governing capabilities. This study recommends other actors in the region be aware of these economic priorities from China when considering their own strategies towards Africa
