Patriotism, Polarization and War: The Consequences of Divergent Meanings of Patriotism in Russia and the United States
No full textFrom the knee taken by Colin Kaepernick in America, to the recent invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the views and attitudes that lie behind these actions revolve around the concepts of patriotism and nationalism. With two of the world’s superpowers wrestling with conflict in their ideas of what these terms mean, I examine the meaning of these ideas within both countries. I do this after reviewing existing literature and analyzing the International Social Survey Programme: National Identity data (ISSP). The ISSP is an international social science consortium that has been conducting surveys since 1984. I find important differences in patriotism, national identity, national pride, and national chauvinism or nationalism between Americans and Russians. I also find interesting differences among subgroups in both countries. These differences help to explain Russian motives for its war in Ukraine and rising tensions in American politics
Factors Influencing the Credibility and Believability of Victims of Sexual Assault
No full textThe purpose of this research is to answer the question of which factors that influence the believability of a woman who comes forward to disclose a sexual assault are the most impactful. My methodology consisted of conducting interviews with attorneys who have participated in both the defense and prosecution of criminal sexual conduct cases to evaluate whether the trends revealed in the literature on a macro scale apply to the micro-scale in northern Minnesota. Findings showed that the majority of patterns revealed in the literature did in fact influence the credibility of victims of sexual assault in Beltrami County, Minnesota including chemicals, facts, false reporting, and post-assault contact. Also suggested in the findings were added reasons influential to a victim delaying their reporting and the discussion of how common of a trend not believing a victim of sexual assault is in Beltrami County, Minnesota
Analysis of Hematocrit Levels in Walleye Sander vitreus from Similar Waterbodies
No full textWalleye Sander vitreus are a popular fish among anglers and hold a prominent place in Minnesotan’s identity as their state fish. Because of this, multiple management practices are used to ensure the continued health of their populations within Minnesota waters. In this study, the process of analyzing hematocrit levels was used to determine if the analysis of hematological parameters could be a useful tool in detecting differences in population health. To evaluate this, blood samples were acquired from age-0 and age-1 fish from two similar lakes and run through a hematocrit centrifuge to separate platelets from plasma to read the hematocrit percentage. The results from these samples were analyzed using a two-sample T-test. There was a significant difference between the average hematocrit levels of 42.7% in Lake Bemidji and 36.2% in Lake Plantagenet (P \u3c 0.01). The cause of which has not yet been determined and will require additional research

Has There Been Another “Ferguson Effect”?
No full textOn May 25th, 2020, America stood still as they watched the video of Officer Derek Chauvin press his knee onto the neck of George Floyd leading to his death. Protests, riots, and calls to defund the police all ensued in the following months. I focus on how Floyd’s death changed attitudes towards law enforcement and may have contributed to an increase in crime, similar to the idea of a Ferguson effect, perhaps there was a Floyd effect in 2021. I focused this research on 69 cities, using crime data from the Major Cities Chiefs Association. I then measured public concern, by using Google Trends to find the ratio in Black Lives Matter searches and Blue Lives Matter searches. Initial analysis shows that there is a slight Floyd effect seen when taking the Google Trends data as the independent variable and running that with the dependent variable of the percent change in homicides from 2020-2021. Data shows as the ratio from the searches increases, the percentage of homicides also increases. This can also be seen slightly when looking at both robberies and aggravated assaults
Putting Around the Issue: How Gender Issues are Pushing Women Away from Golf
No full textI identify the reasons why women leave the sport of golf and what can be done to keep women playing golf. I take a look at the issues presented from a variety of perspectives as they have affected women in sports, and specifically, golf. I also identify, through interviews, what complications are currently present, and explore first-hand experiences with gender equality. What is the pushing factor for women playing golf, but more importantly, what circumstances make women choose to no longer play golf?
The greater issues that are investigated include interpersonal, intrapersonal and structural constraints that women face. From the time commitment to the lack of self-confidence, women have struggled with finding where they belong at the golf course. I talked with many women about their experiences on the golf course, gendered experiences while playing, and what can be done to lessen the number of women leaving the sport. The larger connection to the gender issue is discussed in connection to the male fear of feminization and lack of respect for women on and off the golf course

Changes in the Minnesota Northern Pike Population Over the Past Thirty Years
No full textNorthern pike Esox lucius are one of the most popular game fish in Minnesota. Many anglers have noticed that northern pike seemed to decrease in size throughout much of this state. Catch per unit of effort (CPUE) drives average weight for northern pike; within lakes, as CPUE goes up average weight decreases. Decreases in size has led the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (MNDNR) to implement new regulations on northern pike. The MNDNR noticed that not all the state has this same problem with Northern Pike, and has broken down the state into three zones, with different protected slots and limits based on where the lake is located geographically within Minnesota. Results from this study indicate the north-central zone has seen a statistically significant increase in pike CPUE (Ŷ = -237.78 + 0.12X; P \u3c 0.01). The other areas of Minnesota have not seen any statistically significant changes in northern pike population density. These steady populations are due to lack of fishing pressure plus the slow reproductive rates in these areas of the state. Having regulations based on yields is not as effective when regulating northern pike, because anglers are very selective and do not tend to keep smaller pike
