Cooperative Learning in the Mathematics Classroom
Student interactions are important which provokes the idea that cooperative learning should be incorporated into classrooms. Research states many benefits for incorporating cooperative learning and are included in the literature review. Cooperative groups were introduced and studied by the author, who ultimately concluded that cooperative learning does have a place in Mathematics classrooms and should be used when the lesson lends itself to a cooperative environment. To What Degree Will Differentiated Instruction Impact Student Grades in a Middle School Classroom?
The middle school student population encompasses one of the widest ranges of diversity in the educational system. Besides cultural, religious, educational, economical diversity, the middle school student copes with physical and psychological changes as well. It is important to understand that reaching students successfully is not teaching one way, but providing a learning experience based on students’ needs. The five key differentiated strategies in the classroom are: knowing the student, the environment, meaningful lessons, tiered assignments, and assessment. Gather as much information on the students, such as data from past standardize tests, conversation with students, student journals about success and failure, and classroom observations. Equally important is for the student to feel successful in the classroom by providing a safe and caring environment. When students feel the environment is conducive to learning and success they will continue to work hard and be rewarded with positive results. Designing meaningful lessons will engage all students by incorporating activities and group work to enhance achievement. Tiered assignments are designed from the results of the pre-assessment test. The assignments are one level above the ability of the students in each group. It is important the teacher creates all assessments and when designing assessments, it is important that students obtain success and have mastered the concepts taught. A study was conducted in a middle school. Four groups were studied to see if student achievement would occur with the implementation of differentiation. Findings indicated that there was an increase in student achievement from mid-quarter to the end of the quarter. Successful classrooms need to incorporate differentiated strategies for students to be successful in the classroom
Educational Vouchers and Academic Performance
Every time our elected representatives are looking at budget, or election time rolls around, or a family is considering moving, the topic of education is in the thoughts and on the minds of many. Over the years there have been many different education reforms and proposed ideas. This presentation will go in-depth into one such educational reform idea. Educational vouchers have been studied in various ways over the years; the data for this study comes from Milwaukee, Wisconsin and gathered over the course of years. The data gathered allows one to compare students in Milwaukee Public Schools and students that went to various other (mostly private) schools by the means of a voucher and compare their performance on standardized tests. Different grades, ethnicities, and genders seem to respond differently to vouchers. Now the question is: why

Are Developmental Math Courses Being Offered at the Appropriate Time of Day to Optimize Student Success?
This research paper will identify if a relationship exists between success in pre-requisite developmental math courses and the time of day that the course is offered for students enrolled at a rural community and technical college in northwestern Minnesota. The ACCUPLACER Arithmetic test was administered originally during new student orientation and then, again, at the completion of pre-requisite developmental Math Foundations courses. Paired Pre- and Post- Test data was gathered over seven years, from 2002 to 2009, for a total of 268 students (n=268). The data was then evaluated using one-tail two-sample T-tests assuming unequal variances to determine if a significant performance difference existed among those students enrolled in morning Math Foundations courses versus those enrolled in afternoon Math Foundations courses. The results of the research strongly suggest that students who enroll in afternoon Math Foundations courses significantly outperform their counterparts in the morning courses
