Dangerous Obscurity: A Study of the Female Suicide Combatants of Sri Lanka
No full textSince 1991 the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam have used female suicide operatives in their civil war with the Sri Lankan government. Gaps in research about these phenomena suggest that it’s not seen as a gender specific problem and that female suicide bombers can be compared toe to toe with their male counterparts. I contend that the situation surrounding female suicide terrorism is unique and that certain discernable socioeconomic indicators can explain the reasons behind why some women of Sri Lanka become more active in suicide terrorism. I have compiled a suicide terrorism dataset out of terrorist acts perpetrated by the LTTE, between 1987-2009. I analyze the amount of suicide terrorism, by gender in a given year, by many different statistics. I also use interviews to compare cases of female combatants of the LTTE in similarities dealing with recruitment and motivation. My findings indicate gender specific ways suicide cadres are recruited, as well as an increased effectiveness in using female suicide bombers versus men

Tribal Gaming and the Political Contributions Strategies of Native American Tribes in Minnesota
No full textThe Indian Gaming Regulatory Act has made a big impact on tribal-state relations since it was enacted in 1988 by the federal government. Tribes have started to make campaign contributions to state and federal politicians to help try to mold lawmakers to vote for Tribal interests. My research looks at Minnesota tribes and their campaign contributions to House members during the 2005 election, and whether these lawmakers voted for tribal issues during their term. For control variables I also gathered a variety of information related to legislative districts. What my analysis has shown is that the tribes in Minnesota donate more to Democrats, winners, and incumbents. The information I collected was from different sources, such as, The National Institute on Money in State Politics, and The Minnesota House archives
Creating a Comprehensive Profile of the Academic Competitiveness Grant
No full textThe recent push for more Americans to attend postsecondary institutions has led to the development of numerous and far-reaching government student financial aid programs. These programs have aimed at supplying the whole of the population with financial assistance regardless of color, gender, or age. However, the distribution of the aid has encountered many problems as critics argue that the recipients of the aid are primarily limited to a narrow subgroup of the population. A new program created under the Higher Education Reconciliation Act of 2005 called the Academic Competitiveness Grant is no exception. Preliminary logit analysis of the reception rates of the ACG demonstrates the continuing importance of race, gender, and other demographic characteristics within this form of federal aid. I have acquired data from the National Postsecondary Student Aid Survey utilizing the undergraduate data from 2008
