Tracking in Middle School Mathematics
No full textThis paper is a review of research pertaining to the issue of tracking in middle and high school mathematics. More focus is given to middle school because this is usually where tracking begins in mathematics. It supports research on the rationale behind detracking our schools and moving towards heterogeneous classrooms. Research behind the psychological effects of tracking is also provided, along with how tracking can segregate our school systems. There is a variety of research on the effect of tracking in mathematics. One of the most prevalent issues is how tracking is detrimental to the low tracked students. It not only affects their academic scores, but also their perception about themselves compared to their peers that are on a higher track. Likewise, research shows that detracking can slightly improve high achieving students that were in high tracked classes. Tracking has been at the center of debates in today’s education and this paper will show the positive and negative effects that it can have on our students and communities

Improving Student Achievement Through Feedback
No full textThis paper reviews the current research that exists on feedback given to students in an educational setting. Questions examined were what characteristics make feedback effective, what are the effects on student achievement if feedback is available to students in a math classroom and does timing of the feedback given play a role in its effectiveness. Results showed that feedback is effective if it is descriptive, including both strengths and weaknesses. Feedback given in small doses throughout the learning process, so as not to overwhelm students, has also proven effective. The research shows that the effect of feedback on student achievement is significant. Meta-analysis done by Hattie (1999) shows that typical schooling has an effect size of 0.40 while feedback has more than twice that, an effect size of 0.95. With regards to timing of feedback, research does not lead this author to conclude that immediate is any more or less effective than delayed feedback

White Bass Assessment in Regards to Changes in Water Level on Lake Traverse
No full textUntil recently the white bass Morone chrysops has been somewhat ignored by anglers, more so in Minnesota than other states; most likely due to their limited distribution throughout the state. However, with more anglers becoming aware of the sporting and culinary potentials of white bass, interests have risen. With this rise in angler interest, there should be a rise in white bass assessments. Knowing what factors may be influencing white bass population dynamics will allow fisheries professionals to better manage and protect white bass fisheries. White bass are often found in rivers and impoundments were dams are present and water levels often fluctuate. The objective of this study was to determine if water level was influencing growth of white bass. It was determined there was a trend of increased length of age-0 fish with increased water levels up to a threshold limit resulting in the relationship to be non-linear
Brown Trout Spawning Location and Relationship to Suitable Winter Habitat
No full textBrown trout are a popular game fish throughout much of the world. Understanding habitat requirements is necessary for the successful management of brown trout. This study looks at the spawning habitat preferences and relationship of redd location to wintering habitat of brown trout in the Straight River, Minnesota. Brown trout in the Straight River were found to spawn in similar habitat to brown trout looked at in previous literature. All redds were located on gravel substrate. Seventy eight percent of redds were associated with some sort of cover. Water velocities at the redd sites. (mean=0.456 ms/cm), dissolved oxygen (mean=9.78 mg/L), and pH (range 4.54-6.01) were also examined. Evidence of a relationship between wintering habitat and spawning location was found. When the relationship between wintering habitat and mean winter HSI values for 100 m sections was examined, the relationship is insignificant at each minimum HSI value that was examined. When the relationship of distance to site specific wintering habitat was examined, the relationship was found to be significant for every minimum wintering HSI value that was examined (HSI=0.65 p=0.003)(HSI=0.55 p=0.0355)(HSI=0.50 p=0.0001)
