Assessment of American White Pelican Predation and Reproductive Success of Walleye in the Tamarac River, MN
The Tamarac River is a major tributary of the Red Lakes MN, which provides an economically important multispecies fishery. The river experiences spring spawning migrations of northern pike, walleye, and white suckers. However, limited data exists related to reproductive success of fishes in the river. Furthermore, in the previous decade large congregations of American white pelicans (AWPE) have been observed using the Tamarac River as a foraging ground each spring. Assessing reproductive success of fishes in the Tamarac River provides a more holistic understanding of fish ecology in the river and the importance of the Tamarac River to the Red Lakes walleye fishery. Additionally, quantifying AWPE consumption in the river allows for assessment of the possible impacts of AWPE predation on the Red Lakes walleye fishery. Aerial surveys, diet composition data, and a bioenergetics model were used to estimate AWPE consumption of fishes in 2014 and 2015. AWPE diet was primarily composed of walleye (99.5%) and AWPE consumption in 2014 and 2015 accounted for 1.46 and 0.09% of the mean walleye annual natural mortality in the Red Lakes, respectively. Walleye spawning habitat was assessed using side scan sonar mapping that provided 78.0% overall accuracy when used to predict suitable spawning substrate. Side scan sonar mapping yielded an estimate of 26,398 m2 of suitable walleye spawning substrate that was accessible in 2015. The estimated area of suitable substrate represented 8.4% of the total riverbed mapped. Drift nets were used to evaluate temporal and spatial variations of larval fishes and provided evidence to suggest horizontal position in the river influences larval densities in multiple species. Low walleye larvae catch provided evidence to suggest low dissolved oxygen concentrations associated with high water levels resulted in high walleye embryo and/or larvae mortality

Survival of walleye eggs in Upper Red Lake and the Tamarac River
Walleyes experience spawning runs each spring in the Tamarac River, a tributary of the Red Lakes. However, data about walleye egg survival in the lake and river is lacking. Mesh cages were placed in both the Tamarac River and Upper Red Lake to compare survival rates. A total of twenty cages were set, ten in the river and ten in the lake. Each cage contained one hundred fertilized eggs which were checked every third day to measure survival. Temperature (°C), dissolved oxygen (mg/L), and pH were measured at each cage location. The river had an average survival rate of 22% and the lake 8%. There was a significant difference in survival rates between the lake and river (p = 0.007), meaning that the river in the spring of 2015 was more suitable for walleye egg survival. Temperature did not differ significantly between the lake and river (p = 0.12) and therefore was not a likely cause of differences in egg survival. Dissolved oxygen significantly differed between the lake and river, (p = 0.004) however, it likely had little influence on survival because dissolved oxygen levels were in the optimal range for egg survival throughout the study in both systems. The lake had a lower survival rate than the river likely resulting from a higher average pH (p \u3c 0.001). High average wind speeds may have also caused low egg survival in the lake

Abstract: The process of learning through experience, whether in formal or informal settings, can be likened to a journey. There will likely be twists, turns, and unexpected vistas to be explored. For libraries wishing to take experiential learning further, a teacher’s creed can serve as a map to the landscape, a useful tool for getting to where one would like to be. A teacher’s creed is a personal statement of an educator’s beliefs about what education means and how it ought to be conducted. This type of meaningful statement of belief can be expanded to serve libraries experimenting with experiential approaches, both as a reflective source of inspiration and as a guide to concrete action. This concluding chapter is offered as a reflection from one “experiential librarian” on potential paths through the landscape, suggesting key areas for growth and possible future synergies

Abiotic Habitat Preferences of Age-0 Paddlefish In Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota During Late Summer
Since the early 1990’s, surface visual counts along transects have been conducted annually, allowing for estimates of relative abundance and year-class strength of age-0 paddlefish Polyodon spathula on the upper portions of Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota. This study focuses on the annual visual surface count data collected over an eleven year period from 2004-2014. More specifically it focuses on abiotic habitat factors (Secchi depth, water depth, and water temperature) and how they relate to age-0 paddlefish locations in late summer. Understanding habitat use during early life stages is imperative, yet to date, there is very limited knowledge available regarding the habitat preferences of young paddlefish. During this study fish were found to prefer Secchi depths between 10 and 60 cm, with the most productive range being at 30-40 cm. Water depths between 1 and 5 m produced the most age-0 sightings, while depths between 2-3 m had the highest frequencies of sightings. Certain temperature ranges, most notably 17-20 o C and 22-25 o C, were shown to be preferred by age-0 paddlefish also. Overall, the data from this study strongly suggests that significant relationships exist between age-0 paddlefish sightings and specific ranges of Secchi depths, water depths, and water temperatures. Future studies should focus on trying to correlate biotic factors, such as feeding activity and food availability, with the abiotic factors discussed in this study to achieve a broader understanding of young paddlefish habitat preferences during this vulnerable stage of life
