Palabras clave: árbol pionero, dormancia física, luz roja lejana, procedencia, nicho de germinaciónABSTRACTGuazuma ulmifolia is a pioneer tree of the Neotropic with physical dormancy (PY), which in Cuba is widely distributed in vegetation of wet and dry sites. The latter could be a consequence of a broad germination niche as occurs in seeds of many species once PY is eliminated. The objective of the present work was to determine the germination behavior of fresh seeds and non-dormant of G. ulmifolia under a wide range of substrate temperatures and illumination. Before sowing the seeds were subjected to scarification with sulfuric acid to eliminate PY. A simple classification experiment was designed with factorial arrangement of treatments that simulated some natural conditions to which the seeds may be subjected once they reach the soil. Four substrate temperatures (25ºC, 25/30ºC, 25/35ºC and 25/40ºC) were tested and two light conditions (light and dark) for seeds from two collection sites in western Cuba. Germination was also tested under adverse lighting conditions (far-red light). The seeds of both provenances presented high percentages of final germination under all conditions tested, being the range of 25/30ºC the optimum to increase and accelerate the germination. However, the magnitude of the germination response depended significantly on seminal provenance. This germination behavior found in G. ulmifolia could be part of the regeneration strategy of the species to occupy many sites, as has been verified in other taxa whose seeds have PY at maturity.Key words: far red light, germination niche, physical dormancy, pioneer tree, provenancePD

Testing the allelopathic effect of Tithonia diversifolia (Asteraceae) on a model species / Efecto alelopático de Tithonia diversifolia (Asteraceae) sobre una especie modelo

In Cuba, it is invading several regions. Particularly, it covers a large area in a protected area located at Guamuhaya cordillera: Topes de Collantes. Some authors have referred the allelopathic potential of T. diversifolia as the main factor that makes it so dominant in regions where it is exotic, such as Africa and Thailand. In this sense, we aim to assess the allelopathic potential of T. diversifolia in Cuba, through a target species with high germination and seedling emergence of Lactuca sativa. Three experiments were carried out covering germination and emergence of lettuce and Tithonia's leaves and bracts as source of allelopathic compounds. Germination was not significantly affected by T. diversifolia. Radicle length was enhanced by leaf aqueous leachate, whereas hypocotyl was negatively affected. Leaves and bracts did not exerted significant effects on radicle and hypocotyl growth. Only lettuce radicle was negatively affected by T. diversifolia's leaves. The rhizosphere soil and leaf aqueous leachate on soil did not exert noticeable effects on lettuce emergence. Nonetheless, hypocotyl length was slightly enhanced by rhizosphere soil. Tithonia diversifolia did not show strong allelopathic effects on germination and early growth of lettuce. Instead, it showed contrasting light effects depending on the source of allelochemicals and the specific target.Key words: bracts, leaf aqueous leachate, leaves, lettuce germination, rhizosphere soilPD

Abstract:  In current research we made a comparison between fluctuating asymmetry levels in three anatomical structures, to contribute to enlighten morphological development control mechanisms in bats and to establish a baseline for environmental quality assessments of its habitats. To achieve that we compare fluctuating asymmetry in three body parts with different function, under the hypothesis that those with higher importance would need higher control levels of asymmetry. We measured forearm and tibia´s length, and the length and area of auditive external ear in 97 bats of the species Phyllonycteris poeyi, in localities Cueva del vaho (Mayabeque) and Cueva de los majáes (Santiago de Cuba). Using Montecarlo tests the variation coefficients were compared among structures, sexes and localities. Statistical tests show differences in asymmetry levels in the body structures of the same population. The ears were the structure with higher variation level. No sexual differences were recorded in fluctuating asymmetry, and tibias asymmetry variability shown geographic variation among populations. Palabras clave: tomate, mezcla de inóculos, agresividad, efectividad, pHAbstractThe effect of the inoculation of eight different VAM fungi single or in combination of two or three isovolumetrical inocula were tested on the growth and mycorrhizal characteristics of three different varieties of tomato. Plants grew on a Yellowish Red Ferralithic during eight weeks. Plants were fertilized weekly since the fourth week. Final height, stem neck diameter, number of flowers, shoot, root, rootlets and total plant dry weights, percentage VAM colonization and total length of colonized roots were analyzed. Effectiveness categories were also determined for all the analyzed characters. Among the single inocula tested Rhizoglomus intraradices, Diversispora spurca and R. fasciculatum were the best for all three varieties in our experimental conditions. Double and triple inocula produced an increase in growth statistically lower or similar than that produced by pure inocula when plants were inoculated with the effective and aggressive fungi R. fasciculatum or R. manihotis. Triple inoculation produced always an increase in growth statistically similar or higher than double inoculations. These results suggest that the use of multiple inocula may be desirable but care should be taken about the species involved and the proper pH. The use of multiple inocula could be more convenient that the pure strains inoculation, but it should know the strains that are going to be mixture with regard to effectiveness, aggressiveness and proper pH.Key words: tomato, inocula mixing, aggressiveness, effectiveness, pHPD

Depredación de semillas de Acacia belairioides por brúquidos (Coleoptera: Chysomelidae: Bruchinae) y sus efectos en la germinación / Seed predation Acacia belairioides by bruchids (Coleoptera: Chysomelidae: Bruchinae) and its effect on germination

    No full text
Palabras clave: dormancia física, infestación por brúquidos, Stator bottimeri, serpentinaAbstractAcacia belairioides is an endemic tree that grows in serpentine xeromorphic thorny scrub of the province of Holguín, Cuba. A. belairioides is a Critically Endangered species and produces seeds with physical dormancy. In the present work, the species of bruchids that infested the seeds of A. belairioides, the type of damage and their relation with seed characteristics were identified. The effect of bruchid attack on physical dormancy and germination was also evaluated. The infestation was 32.5% and two non-endemic bruchid species (Stator bottimeri and Sennius fallax) were identified. The seed size was not related to the number of infested seeds, nor to the seed initial moisture content or to the biomass distribution to the seed coat. The seeds damaged with a hole in the seed coat (adult emergency operculum) did not germination. In contrast, seeds with a penetration hole of the larva achieved a final germination of 19.3%, which was superior to the control treatment or intact seeds (8.4%). The possible ecological role of the bruchids activity on the partial elimination of the physical dormancy of A. belairioides seeds and their relationship with the environment is discussed.Key words: bruchid infestation, physical dormancy, Stator bottimeri, serpentinePD

Palabras clave: arenas cuarcíticas, Cuba central, formaciones vegetales, inventario florístico, zona costeraABSTRACTThe carried out work provides detailed information on the terrestrial flora and vegetation, necessary for the conformation of the nomination dossier of a protected area, that would integrate two of the oldest proposals components of the Provincial System of Protected Areas from Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, even without administration: the delta of the Agabama river and the siliceous sands area from Casilda. The plant species list and corresponding analysis of the endemism, utility, conservation status and invasive capacity were obtained. There are 348 infrageneric taxa in the proposed area, 35 of them are Cuban endemics species and 11 species were categorized as endangered. Eleven types of vegetation were described and mapped and the main threats for the integrity of this flora and vegetation were identified, in this case mostly: agriculture, deforestation, livestock farming, fire and the proliferation of alien invasive species. The information obtained will serve as baseline for the future actions of creation and development of the protected area, the conservation management of its natural values and the environmental education of the local residents.Key words: central Cuba, coastal zone, plant inventory, quartz sands, vegetation formationsPD
