The evaluation and processing of the ecological characteristics of the near-shore communities and the review of the publications on phytocenosis allowed the description of new phytocenosis of the back face of the Guanabo beach dunes. The synanthropism of the plants and the ecosystem are closely related to the history of the site and the strong affectation caused by anthropic action. The phytocenological method of Zürich-Montpellier and the Phytosociological Nomenclature Code were used. The identification of phytocenosis and their synanthropic composition, in coastal sandy environments, is an important tool to assess the changes that occur in natural resources and ecosystems as a result of economic development and influences on environmental changes. When species are substituted by the entry or disappearance of individuals from the flora, modifications in the communities are caused, showing symptoms of adaptation and distribution in space and time. The use of the resilience capacity of the native synanthropic species in the coastal dunes can facilitate the restoration processes by allowing the stabilization of the dune sands, increasing their floristic composition and facilitating the development and multiplication of the species in the different strips or sectors of the dunes, thus making the efforts for the ecological restoration of the whole ecosystem viable

The goal of this study is to make a macroscopic and microscopic description of the gonadal morphology of Peltophryne empusa. To do so, six specimens (two males and four females) were collected during the two seasons (dry and wet) of the period 2018-2019 in San Paúl, Artemisa, Cuba. Specimens were anesthetized with a diethyl-ether 99% solution, then, they were sized and measured. After that they were dissected and the entire masculine gonads and part of the feminine ones were taken and fixed in formaldehyde 4% and glutaraldehyde 2.4% solutions to be processed by optical and electronic microscopy respectively. Masculine gonads consisted in two elongated non pigmented and very lobulated testicles and two Bidder’s organs located in cephalic position. Feminine one had no Bidder’s organ. Several cysts with sexual cells in different stages of the spermatogenesis were found in the testicles such as: spermatozoa, spermatids, spermatocytes, Sertoli cells and connective tissue. Bidder’s organ consisted in previtellogenic oocytes, atresic bodies and fat tissue. Spermatozoa were formed by a head, a tail and an undulant membrane. Previtellogenic and vitellogenic oocytes, as well as atresic bodies and germinal bed were found in the ovaries. Oocytes were divided in an animal and a vegetal pole, the nucleus contained nucleoli and lamp brush chromosomes. These characteristics are similar to those of other are also found in other Cuban and foreign anurans. The presence of reproductive characteristics during the dry season in females might have been due to the high precipitations at the beginning of that season

The commercial exploitation of the taxonomy, with the absolutism of the results obtained by modern technologies have affected negatively the biological collections by promoting their ethical and utilitarian depreciation. The latter hinders the proper growth in richness of the collections, holding up the knowledge on the biodiversity by making difficult the description of new taxa and the clarification of their phylogenetic position. The Biological collections are recognized as part of the natural and cultural heritage of the nations. However, they are not treated as other components of such heritage, due to the high levels of self-deterioration and instability of the specimens, the scarcity of standardized methodologies for their conservation and the lack of knowledge on their real value as part of the cultural heritage. The aim of the present paper is to show the issues that affect the development and conservation of the biological collections, due to their dual nature as part of the natural and cultural heritage, as well as to evaluate their effect on the study and conservation of the biodiversity

Tabebuia lepidota: effect of nectar robbing by hummingbirds and bumblebees

    No full text
Nectar robbing occurs when some floral visitors pierce the corolla of the flowers to take the nectar. It has positive effect when it facilitates the robbed species reproduction, negative when it impedes it, and neuter when it doesn't influence it. Although this phenomenon has been documented in Cuban plants, its effect in their reproductive success is still ignored. The flowers of Tabebuia lepidota present evidences of nectar robbing, by bumblebees and hummingbirds. The main objective of this investigation was to determine, in a locality, the frequency of nectar robbing of Tabebuia lepidota by each robber species, and the effect of the robbery in the reproductive success of the species. For this there were counted, in a xeromorphic thorny thicket in the ridge of Pelo Malo, Villa Clara (Cuba), the robbed and non-robbed flowers of 50 plants, and there were marked 30 flowers robbed only by hummingbirds, 30 robbed only by bumblebees and 30 without robbing evidences to evaluate the fructification. The individuals of T. lepidota presented high nectar robbing frequency, which could be due to the high production of nectar of the species, in relation to its floral neighborhood, and its capacity to resynthesize. The hummingbirds robbed more than the bumblebees, which was possibly related to the energetic requirements and the visitation rates of the robber species. T. lepidota produced similar quantities of fruits from robbed flowers that from non-robbed flowers. It was concluded that nectar robbing has neutral effect in the reproductive success of T. lepidota

Phytocenosis of sand dunes on Guanabo beach, Havana, Cuba. I. Incipient dune

    No full text
The heavy damage and destruction of the vegetation of the incipient coastal dunes, caused by anthropization, facilitate the establishment of new synanthropic phytocenoses. These plant communities, on the Guanabo beach, are mainly composed of herbaceous plants, lianas and stoloniferous. The Zürich-Montpellier phytocenological method and the Phytosociological Nomenclature Code were used. The synanthropic phytocenoses described in Guanabo beach were the product of strong anthropization, due to the increase and intensity of human action in the area. The vegetation that was established on the dune remains was enriched with synanthropic species, mainly with native ones, which increased their number and facilitated the stabilization and/or recovery of the composition, structure and functioning of the incipient dune ecosystem
