The internal communication crisis and its impact on an organization’s performance

The aim of this research is to study how internal communication inefficiency can, if at all, lead to an organizational crisis. An answer to this question was found by studying theory and previous empirical research on internal communication and organizational crises. For the purpose of this paper, a case study of one particular organizational crisis was carried out by applying a combined research methodology – in-depth interviews and a survey. As a result of a detailed analysis of theory and a study of a real-life case, a new concept – the “internal communication crisis” – was identified in the study. Also, it wasestablished that an internal communication crisis is a result of asymmetrical formal internal communication, a lack of leadership, weak organizational culture, a lack of values, and active grapevine communication. This research study found that an internal communication crisis is directly related to an organizational crisis because there is a big possibility that in the alternative decision-making process, established as a result of an internal communication crisis, employees will try to solve organizational problems by involving external stakeholders. Such attempts to involve external stakeholders lead to a very high risk of negative publicity and damage to reputation, which gives national policy decisionmakers an opportunity to expose an organization to threats of liquidation or resource reduction

Business scenario planning for declining industry

Companies seek ways to anticipate the future of their existing business and keep it sustainable. Researchers claim that it is possible to gain such an insight into the future and that there is an appropriate methodology for doing so. How will digitalization affect our business in particular? It has never been easy to foresee the future, but a scientific approach would help. Rather than claiming an ability to predict the future, scenario planners advocate the construction of multiple stories that encompass a variety of plausible futures (Schwartz, 1991). The paper industry seems to be an excellent example of an industry declining due to digitalization. This desk research is conducted for future scenario planning of the paper industry

Purpose: As an important player in the healthcare sector, the pharmaceutical industry has received increased attention in the context of the coronavirus disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus (COVID-19) pandemic and medicine shortages. Given the profitability of the pharmaceutical industry, there is a rising focus on business analysis from a wide range of business analysts, as well as consulting and auditing companies. However, the role of scientific research in the analysis of the pharmaceutical industry has been unclear in recent years. Therefore, this study aims to provide insight into the role of scientific business research in the development of the pharmaceutical industry. Methodology: To achieve the research aim, a general review was conducted using Academy of Management journals’ resources, the Web of Science platform, and the Scopus database for the selection of scientific articles. In addition, the views of leading business analysts, as well as consulting and auditing companies, on trends and challenges in the pharmaceutical industry were considered within this framework. Findings: Overall, the trend over the last 15 years has been towards less fundamental research on the development of the pharmaceutical industry. It can be assumed that business analysts, as well as consulting and auditing companies, have taken over this function. However, it is probably the lack of fundamental theoretical research that is one of the determining factors for the uncertain trends and hidden challenges of an outwardly thriving industry. Research limitations: This research provides an overview of trends and challenges in the pharmaceutical industry. In-depth factor analysis is beyond the limitations of this study. Practical implications: This study encourages researchers to focus more on fundamental business research in the pharmaceutical industry, as empirical local market research currently dominates. Originality: The study identified a research gap in fundamental business research on the pharmaceutical industry and proposes to strengthen this research to support the healthcare sector and people’s health. Paper classification: general revie

A number of studies show increasing interest and necessity for various e-solutions introduction in health industry, such as mobile-health (m-health), e-health, telemedicine etc. (Al Basheer Al Morshid S, Healy J. C, et al.). In Latvia similar process is occurring showing that e-health processes and services implementation is one of the most important issues at the vast majority of hospitals and health care institutions in the Republic of Latvia. The authors of the given research paper have analysed the situation in relevant hospital in Y2014, conducted the survey amongst medical personnel and gathered data set for assessment the satisfaction of ICT level by physicians and patients, which could essentially implicate the success of e-service project introduction. Purpose- on the basis of VIMP, its application analysis, the situation with the innovative solution development tendencies and VIMP perspective assessment in Latvia, to develop a basic VIMP application model and make suggestions on VIMP application and its enhancement in Latvia. Design/methodology/approach- research is based on both, theoretical and empirical research methods, which include literature review, the interviews with experts and the survey results of 1111 respondents, the data analysis of 20 VIMP, 20 case studies of VIMP use globally and in Latvia, as well as an overview and data analysis of two main Latvian VIMP producers. Findings- the results of the research show that in basic VIMP application model and its elements there is interest which is strictly determined by its role and aim, but to make the process more successful the choice of VIMP is to be based on 20 factors. There is a perspective application of VIMP in all sectors and it can be enhanced by not only VIMP representatives, but also academic, public and private sector. Practical implications- the results of the research can be used by organizations from academic, private and public sectors (potential researchers, users or VIMP supporting organizations). The causes of this are different - to increase profitability, expand into new markets, meet new business requirements or other reasons. The purpose of the paper is twofold. Firstly, to develop methodological approach – evaluation matrix, to exam successful/unsuccessful Lean implementation projects, and secondly to review collected cases through evaluation matrix, which has been designed by the authors. Design/methodology/approach – Relevant databases was taken to search for case studies of Lean implementation under certain criteria. Literature sampling method – case studies demonstrate successful or unsuccessful results of Lean implementation, with 5 or more literature sources references, and was published in one of the peer reviewed journal. In total were checked 150 articles for taxonomy definition, and chosen 17 papers for evaluation. Findings – The taxonomy of organisation attributes with the level of changes was developed to build-up a scale for Lean implementation measurement and dependences definition. The taxonomy later on was used for selected case study evaluation. This article summarizes a number 16 of organisations where Lean is working throw evaluation matrix previously designed. Most common application and outcomes are discussed on the case study examples. Research limitations/implications – This research reviews case studies published from 2009 and focused on Lean implementation in various types of organizations. Systematization and classification was used for reviewed literature analysis. Practical implications – The research can be used by business units for goals definitions, expectations management and assumptions tracking. Practical value – This is the first paper to make a multi-level taxonomy of layers and problems for successful Lean applications. A new classification can be used for pre- and post-implementation phase comparisons, goals definitions and assumptions tracking
