The Effectiveness of Altman’s Z Score Model in Predicting the Financial Health of Banking Lnstitutions in Ghana.
Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to assess the relevance and effectiveness of Altman’s Z Score model in predicting the failures and the financial health of banking institutions in Ghana. The study was conducted using the quantitative research method and the descriptive analytical research design. Drawing on annual financial data from a sample of 5 failed banks and 21 non-failed banks licensed by the Bank of Ghana, the study examined the Altman Z Score model with data set from the 2012 financial year to the 2016 financial year. Analysis of the failed banks revealed a 75 per cent prediction accuracy for the Altman Z Score model five years prior to failure and a 100 per cent prediction accuracy four, three and two years prior to failure. Assessment of the financial health of the non-failed banks for the 2016 financial year, classified 9 banks as distressed, 11 banks into the grey zone and 1 bank as safe. The study concluded that Altman’s Z Score model is an effective model for predicting the failures and financial health of banking institutions in Ghana and recommends its consideration and adoption as the model of choice for assessing the financial health and the possible failure of banking institutions in Ghana
The Impact of Technological Change (Digital Currency) on Traditional Banking
Get PDFThe banking industry is vibrant and provides many resources to both public and private entities. Its existence primarily facilitates the movement of funds from companies and individuals who patronise its activities. With the aim of meeting this primary requirement, the banking institution makes money from the charges levied on clients who demand its services. Notwithstanding the importance of banking activities, the change in technology has brought more competition to the industry. The challenges faced by the industry have resulted in many banking institutions folding up as a result of non-compliance with rules set up by regulators. For this reason, the research investigates the causes of the inability of banks to meet the requirements laid down by regulators. The study indicates that the banking industry is often slow in the adaptation of new processes due to its peculiar culture. However, the inability to quickly adapt to changes in the fast-paced world of changing technology is impacting negatively on the operations of the traditional banking industry. The study identifies some of the current changes such as cryptocurrency, mobile money and the impact they have had on the banking industry. The study recommends the need for the banking industry to quickly adapt to the current changes so as to be competitive in the industry
Determinants of Continuous Use of Mobile Money Payment Systems in Ghana.
Get PDFThis study examines the effect of user’s satisfaction on post-acceptance behaviour of mobile money users. Specifically, the paper identifies satisfactory factors and further examines the relationship between satisfaction and continuous use of mobile money application at the post-acceptance phase. Data was collected from 696 mobile phone users who had subscribed to mobile money services. Partial least squares (PLS) (Smart PLS 3.0) were used to analyse the collected data to test proposed hypotheses. This study revealed that users’ satisfaction is a significant factor that influences their intentions to continue to use mobile money services. The results indicated that users’ satisfaction is strongly influenced by confirmation and perceived usefulness which in turn significantly impact on continuous use of mobile money applications. Also, perceived security and privacy exert significant impact on users satisfaction. It was noted that charges and fees were insignificant but positively related to users’ intentions to continue to use mobile money applications. The findings have implications on both telecommunication firms and policy makers as they offer practical guidelines in developing strategies to ensure continuous use of mobile money applications/ services as we improve upon financial inclusion in Ghana in particular and Africa in general. This study therefore fills the gap in the post-adoption stage of mobile money usage and further use in Ghana

Orality in Ghanaian Newspaper Narratives: An Analysis of Yankah’s Woes of a Kwatriot.
Get PDFThe study explores the influence of orality on Ghanaian prose by explicating the verbal art strategies utilized by Yankah (1990) in his newspaper writing, Woes of a Kwatriot, and, by so doing, illustrating how the interaction between literature and journalism help in bringing about a vector of expression that reveals indigenous literary values. Yankah foregrounds tensions in the Ghanaian society using the medium of orality in a newspaper format, showcasing how indigenous literary modes can facilitate and enhance the quality of the journalism prose. In other words, Yankah saw the emergence of experimental writing as crucial in bringing Ghana, at the margin, to the centre of not only literary production but to the global arena where the writer can play a big role in shaping the fortunes of the people. Yankah is making the case that the African writer should not only mimic what obtains in the established Western canons. Rather, he or she must consciously facilitate the creation of new forms, an example being combining African elements with the Western long form such as lodging orality in journalism prose in a bid to mediate “the forces of modernity”

Growing Entrepreneurial Talent-A Challenge for Ghana’s Educational Systems.
Get PDFThis article is written with my personal conviction as a corporate and financial services industry player and the unabated sheer quantum of unemployment in Ghana. The teeming youth unemployment which culminated in the formation of ‘the association of unemployed graduates’ a couple of years ago, can be traced to the poor formulation of educational policies with particular reference to lack of introducing entrepreneurship education from primary/ junior high schools. Skills and knowledge derived from the teaching of entrepreneurship education from primary/junior high schools is likely to engender indelible imprint in the memories of these pupils and at the same time generate passion at a very tender age. The knowledge acquisition would enable the pupils to carry through to senior high school and tertiary institutions. They would then have made up their minds on the courses of study they would pursue to becoming entrepreneurs. Challenges, such as dearth of qualified teachers and lack of teaching facilities are apparent deterrents. However, with deliberate training and retraining of teachers, will equip them to pass on the necessary knowledge to the pupils. The long-term benefits of introducing entrepreneurship education in primary/junior high schools cannot be quantified, as it would have positive effect in transforming the industrial development of Ghana

A number of modular systems have been proposed, these include a Purchase Order System, GPS Fleet Tracking System, Credit Reference System and Fore Court Operations management system.
