The tangible and intangible values of river towards sustainable urban landscape development
This paper presents a review on the tangible and intangible values of river towards sustainable urban landscape development. The framework incorporated ecological knowledge related to river and sustainable planning and design process, rivers as an urban greenways corridor and green patches, river as urban heritage conservation, rivers and riverfront development and theory from the Islamic perspectives. The objective of the paper is to identify the functional and spatial structure of the existing river with respect to the requirements for harmonious development, protection and improvement of the sustainable urban landscape. It is also to provide important ecological and aesthetic benefits of river in urban setting. This study presents an understanding for facilitating protection, preservation, restoration, ecological enhancement of the river into a more comprehensive land-use planning process
Leveraging IT-Based Competitive Advantage: UK Industry Perspective
It is widely acknowledged that the UK construction industry has invested in IT as an integral part of its core business. However, there is also ample evidence to indicate that this investment has repeatedly and systematically failed to deliver the anticipated benefits, and it is argued that the investments are still predominantly sporadic and inward looking. Whilst the industry appears to understand the strategic benefits that can be realised through IT, the precise mechanisms through which these can be leveraged to maximise the likelihood of their success is not yet fully understood. In this context therefore, organisations need to be in a state of 'readiness', in order to have the capability required to effectively absorb IT enabled innovation into its work practices. In this respect, a high-level survey was conducted to gauge and assess the overall awareness and understanding of the UK construction industry's leading Chief Executives and IT Directors on this issue - particularly, to envision a way forward. This survey covered three main areas of: strategic benefits of IT; critical elements that lead to the realisation of these benefits, and the drivers behind these investment decisions. Research results identify a clear paradigm shift in thinking, with respondents identifying that IT strategies are now being integrated into organisational business strategies but that IT investment was now being influenced by the 'state of readiness' of the organisation in order successfully leverage these investments

Contemporary Manifestations of Islamic Arts in the UAE, Meaning and Representation
The Emirates Palace hotel in Abu Dhabi triggered much debate due to its revival of clearly referenced forms to the Mughal Dynasty in Islamic India, thereby by passing local building traditions. The over whelming display of diverse arts and crafts of Islam compressed in time and space, stand in contrast to Qasr al-Sarab with its clear reference to local heritage such as Al-Jahili Fort in Al-Ain. In both cases they represent a form reconstructed heritage with clear lineages Arab/Islamic architecture without attempts of reinterpretation or abstraction. These hotel/resorts and the architectural manifestations they emanate are intrinsic parts of a trend in Abu Dhabi to search for an architectural identity in a rapidly growing modern Arab city. In both cases motifs of an Arab/Muslim referendum have been imported from a spectrum of Islamic arts and crafts, to be displayed in situ, as subjects with conscious semiotics to dynastic Arab/Muslim pasts. This study addresses representations of contemporary Islamic forms emerging in the UAE and juxtaposes Qasr al-Sarab with its integration of desert/adobe forms to the Emirates Palace with its display and acquisition of arts of the Muslim world. In many ways both hotel/resorts replace the museum as an institution that is not yet fully developed in Abu Dhabi, and thereby are part of a strategy to create a collective memory for the city as the capital of an emerging modern Arab Nation State
Adaptability of Teacher's Quarters Using IBS in Malaysia
The objective of this paper is to identify the Performance Index of Satisfaction (PIS) on adaptability of housing using Industrialized Building System (IBS) in Malaysia. Preliminary research identified that the attitude of the individual towards design standard and user’s need depends on many varying factors such as physical area and psychological feeling of the internal spaces. The study focuses on the housing using IBS by identifying level of user’s satisfaction and the conditions for adaptability to be applied into the house. Adaptability in architecture is defined as providing occupants with forms and means that facilitate a fit between their space needs and the constraints of their homes either before or after occupancy. The ability of modifications to suit new conditions or the design will allow for any additions to make building more flexible. This will ease for renovation and extension thats currently limited in housing using IBS. A case study was carried out at eleven Teacher’s Quarters using IBS in Malaysia. The Performance Index of Satisfaction (PIS) is utilized in the analysis as a systematic manipulation of the factors and the variables of design. The findings confirmed the requirements and potential for physical adaptabilities in Teacher’s Quarters. The conceptual model was revised based on user’s satisfaction of internal spaces in the house. Transforming the architectural dictums from “form follows function†to “form accommodates change†by estimating the sociological impact of professional and practice attitudes and mindsets should be encouraged towards successful implementation of adaptable housing using IBS in Malaysia
Universal Design from Islamic Perspective: Malaysian Masjid
In general, Masjid is known as the spiritual sanctuary for Muslims, acting as a centre for worship, religious activity centre, teaching and learning of Al-Quran, Hadith and Sunnah as well as organizing public events and seminars such as talks and weddings. Muslims are encouraged to attend congregational prayers at all five praying times and to participate in communal activities as well as intellectual discourses conducted at Masjid. From Islamic perspective, providing accessibility and applying Universal Design principal in Masjid design in considering the need to provide for Persons with Disabilities (Persons with Disabilities (PwDs)) and the elderly has deliberately making Masjid a place of ease and convenient for all people to come to Masjid. The methodology considers conducting access audit at case studies, observations on existing built environment and design recommendation on the analysed data with reference to Malaysian Standards and related Acts/By-Laws. Existing Masjid in Malaysia varies in design concepts, design requirement, design guidelines, scale and also function but it is according to the architects in implementing good design practice and it is also even better when architects apply a ‘design for all’ concept. In conclusion, accessibility is important to be provided for all Muslim regardless of ability or disability to pray at Masjid comfortably and safe
