Mosque design should not be seen from just the external physical by itself, but the effective use of its interior must also be taken into consideration. This study is quite thorough in formulating a set of guiding principles through literature and site observations of selected mosques in Malaysia that are built from 1728 until 2005. Mihrab, which is impregnated by the Qibla wall, exists in almost all mosques built around the globe, carrying vital functions of orientating the Muslim prostration activities in mosques towards the Ka’aba in Mecca whilst providing the very own space for Imam in congregations. This thesis synthesizes Mihrab through the analysis of its design and ornamentation from the selected 23 historical and contemporary mosques in Malaysia. First of all, this study looks at Mihrab as a focal point that needs to be emphasized with a high degree of visibility by examining the mosque layout especially at the prayer hall area, where the prostration activities must be aided by mosques liturgical elements such as Mihrab and Qibla wall. Secondly, the evolution of Mihrab form is seen from the typological study that gives the styles of Mihrab employed in Malaysian mosques. The findings show that Malaysian Mihrabs and Qibla walls were not only styled with influences from abroad as there are styles uniquely originated and associated with the Malays. Thirdly, observation on the ornamentation of Mihrab and Qibla wall has revealed that Malaysian mosques have their own tell tale motifs of vegetation that portray Malaysian identity in its own special way. Study on Mihrab proves that cultural and social values of the local Muslims are still significant even though Malaysia perceived influences from Indians, Arabs and Chinese traders, including the British colony

Strategies to Enhance Quality Data Input Requirements of Life Cycle Cost (LCC)

    Get PDF
Commentators pointed out that one of the major hurdles of implementing LCC analysis in the Malaysian construction industry is lack of current and reliable data. In addition, most of LCC researchers and estimators in the Malaysian construction industry considerably focused on the LCC conversion process but very little emphasis is given on the availability, accessibility, currency and reliability of data as inputs into the process of producing reliable LCC outputs. This paper reports part of a three-year programme of research to enhance quality of LCC outputs through the enhancement of quality data input requirements. The objective of this paper is to present on the development, evaluation and validation of the most appropriate strategies to improve the availability, accessibility, currency and reliability of data as inputs into the process of producing reliable LCC analysis in the Malaysian construction industry. Looking at the results of the most appropriate strategies which have been prioritized, there is an overwhelming requirement for a clear procedure or comprehensive guideline to be prepared on the acquisition of cost data inputs to enhance quality data input requirements of LCC. This clear procedure can be best translated in the form of model, framework or protocol to be developed so that a step by step methodological approach can be exacted to make the data available, accessible, current and reliable in facilitating the clients, estimators and researchers to better calculate LCC leading to better outputs

Spas have become increasingly popular and have emerged as important profit centers for hotels. However, the uniqueness of this market has been largely overlooked in terms ofShari’ah compliance to better cater to Muslim needs. This study repositions spa typologies, their spatial organization and social interaction in the context of Islamic built environment. A survey was administered at four case different spas in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor to identify the dimensions of a Muslim-friendly spa. Cluster analysis was then applied to classify spa premises into different groups based on the typologies, services and spatial organization. The analysis was performed according to the groups to determine Muslim-friendly elements. Based on the findings, a Shari’ah-compliant considers security, privacy, and segregation of genders in its design. This research provides further information on the understanding, practice, features, and requirements of Muslim-friendly spas which will help to boost Malaysia’s potential to become a prominent destination for Islamic or Shari’ah-compliant tourism

Despite of the massive tourist visit to Melaka UNESCO sites; the sites had been one of the most visited places in Malaysia in 2015. Melaka, as one of the important UNESCO heritage sites in Malaysia with many public facilities particularly heritage buildings truly needs to consider effective signage design application to make it easier for tourist way-finding. There has been a variety of research done about user experience and way-finding, but the studies have focused either on the effectiveness of signage design or user experience. However, there is very less study that explores the understanding in connection on tourist experience and signage in prominent areas. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore the understanding in connection to tourist experience in UNESCO heritage sites by referring to the signage. The data was collected through the pilot survey and photo elicitation in the UNESCO sites of Melaka. The findings indicated that most of the signage in the heritage sites were not effective most of the sign provide the directions within a site or building including arrows. However, usage of symbols in the directional signs are minimal. For information signs at the heritage sites are related to overall orientation within a site or building. Some of the information sign do not contain maps, diagrams and directory signs that able to give the detail information to the users because of the size is too small to fit all the information needed. Lastly for identification sign, due to some of the places are not directed by the directional signs, the tourist still unable to reach the desired sites although the sites have a good identification signage. In conclusion, ihe signage should be sensitively located, scaled and detailed so as not to obscure ambiguous or distract the integrity of the historical objects

A REVIEW OF SUSTAINABLE DESIGN IN THE AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY

    Get PDF
To date, much research on the sustainability of the automotive industry has been published. The classification analysis method has been used to describe the relationship between sustainable design categories and the automotive industry. More than 50 articles related to sustainability towards the automotive industry were found from a search through a database on sustainability and automotive published between 2000 and 2018. This paper attempts to direct attention towards the user and responding to his needs when designing automobiles to help avoid overconsumption. The findings show that the past articles discussed 1) improvement and actions taken; 2) the impact of fulfilling the users’ aesthetic and emotional needs; and 3) categories in sustainable products related to the automotive industry including green initiatives to sustainability, Malaysian industry and green initiatives, environmental aspects, sustainability in product life cycle, sustainable consumption, aesthetics and sustainability, end-life-remanufacturing, and product aesthetics, longevity, and user interaction. The study also found that sustainable design is considered less in meeting consumers’ emotional and aesthetic needs. This study could benefit from making early decisions during the automotive design and development process to avoid the costs and time used through later redesign, especially in Malaysia. As a whole, this paper contributes to encouraging manufacturers to adopt new thinking to support the environment by considering the influence of users’ aesthetic and emotional needs to improve the quality of the automotive industry. Keywords: Sustainability, Aesthetic, Automotive, Green Product, Use
