RETHINKING ‘ISLAMIC HERITAGE’: TWO CASE STUDIES TO PONDER

    Get PDF
Architecture played an instrumental role in spreading ideas of different civilizations around the world. Hence, through documenting heritage we could document the facets of different cultural Diaspora through time and spaces. The objective of the heritage study program at the department of Architecture of IIUM is to capture the facets of Islamic Diaspora around the world. As the very concept of Islamic architecture is problematic in today’s architectural discourse, whether the buildings that the students are documenting during their visit are true representative of Islamic architecture is an issue to be discussed. During the Heritage Study trip 2011, the students of architecture of IIUM have recorded two interesting buildings, Haghighi house in Esfahan, Iran and the Diwan-i-Aam of Lalbagh fort, Dhaka, Bangladesh that are apparently ‘secular’ in terms of their function. Whether they could be able to elucidate the variegated expressions of Islamic architecture at two seemingly opposite geo￾temporal locations is the central research question of this article. By using these two examples, this paper critically reexamines the stereotypical but popular conceptions of  ‘Islamic Architectural Style’ that obscured the historical processes of hybridization and its diverse morphological outcomes, and comprehend the process of resilience and assimilation through which architecture is shaped in a particular context

Adoption Of Building Performance Evaluation And Value Management Tools In Building Facilities Management

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to establish the relationship/utility of building performance evaluation and value management to building facilities management. The full potentials of building performance evaluation and value management are under-utilised by building/facilities managers in many organisations/institutions involved in the procurement of building facilities. This has led to unapprised facilities management decisions in the wider organisational learning cycle. The objectives of the study were achieved through a review of current literature and associated web sources. This methodology was designed to identify and evaluate the utility of building performance evaluation and value management tools to improve building facilities management functions. The study suggests that the maximum effectiveness of building facilities management decisions can be realised if performance evaluation data/information are integrated into the value management studies. The study clarifies the links that exist and gaps that need to be addressed when taking a building facilities management decision and raised a number of methodological and performance evaluation issues that must be explored in further studies. The study provides a better understanding of the use of building performance evaluation and value management constructs/concepts in facilities management

    Get PDF
This study aimed to determine the significance and meanings of the carved components and their placements within the timber houses of Kelantan and Terengganu during the periods of 1800s to 1930s. An analytical review on 25 sets of measured drawings of 14 Kelantan houses and 11 Terengganu houses including a total of 148 carved components was conducted by visual descriptive and interpretative analyses. The analytical review of the drawings which were obtained from the Centre for the Study of Built Environment in the Malay World at the Department of Architecture in Universiti Teknologi Malaysia was embraced as a principal method of data collection. Semi-structured interviews with five prominent woodcarvers on art and crafts of wood carving were conducted to substantiate the findings from the analytical review. The woodcarvers’ interpretations were required for verification and validation. The results suggest that 17 types of carved components were found in the houses which were dominated by ventilation panels. A significant pattern of visual attributes was prevalent in the components including types of motifs, shapes and layouts, forms of incision and perforation, carving patterns and compositional principles. Motifs of flora, geometry, Arabic calligraphy and combination of these were depicted in two and three dimensional compositions either in relief or non-relief and perforated or non-perforated forms. Configurations of carving pattern, shapes and layouts of the components were in agreement with the nomenclature of their placements within the interior and exterior fabric and the different forms of the houses. Consistency in the distributions of the components suggests its functions for practical, aesthetical and socio-cultural values and signifies hierarchical utilization of spaces whilst strengthening the regional forms of the house architecture. These qualities including the visual attributes contribute to the significance and meanings of the carved components in the architecture of the selected Kelantan and Terengganu timber houses

    Get PDF
This study aims at encouraging and supporting building developers to integrate environmental concerns more centrally in the planning and production management of buildings in Niger Delta, Nigeria. The objectives are to evaluate the integration level of environmental sustainability concerns, the barriers to effective integration of the concerns and design a decision framework for effective integration of the environmental concerns in the production process. A purposive survey of 148 stakeholders with structured questionnaire resulted in 136 valid responses from; Architect (30), Builders(14), Clients(35), Engineers(22), Town Planners(18) and Surveyors (17). Data were analysed using descriptive, mean score, and Kruskal Wallis tests. The study concludes that, the highest level of integration is given to concern for air quality, natural lighting, and landscape & historical sites protection, while only about 50% of the identified concerns attained moderate integration level. The study found that higher final costs, lack of sustainability promotion strategy, lack of demand and lack of building codes and regulation are the most significant barrier to the integration of environmental concerns, with all the stakeholders having common views on the issues. Based on the findings it is recommended that Government and her agencies should provide the building codes and regulation as well as the enlightenment and supports which will enhance integration of environmental concerns in building planning and production. Stakeholders should endeavour to apply the designed decision framework to enhance the integration of the environmental concerns for sustainable development

The book is a collection of original researches that discussed various environmental challenges and proffer solutions to the environmental challenges in Nigeria based on empirical studies carried out by various contributors. The central theme of the book explores the concepts of liveability and sustainability as the overall goal of urban design. “urban design†is referred to as a place making for people and it fosters sustainable environment-behaviour relationships. In the process of making especially in the “contemporary city development and in the built-environment in general†(p.9), the professionals in all related disciplines have to work together in a ‘common space’ in order to realise the vision of good quality environment. Hence, articles in the book cut-acrossvarious disciplines and the research approaches are inter-disciplinary and multidisciplinary in nature. The book is divided into twenty-one chapters

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF COASTAL LANDSCAPE CHARACTERS AMONG LOCALS AND TOURISTS: A CASE STUDY OF GEBENG – KUALA TERENGGANU TOURISM ROUTE

    Get PDF
The coastal area is often promoted in tourism for its natural scenery of the sand, sea and the sun. In Malaysia, most coastal tourism attractions are located near the rural areas and are accessible via the roadways. Through a rural route, tourists have the opportunity to experience the rural landscapes and natural attractions, traditional villages, taste the local food and conduct recreational activities. However, for a route that has not been recognised as a tourism route, the attractions and landscape features are usually sparsely located and lack integration. Consequently, the interesting places along the route are not well highlighted to the locals and tourists. This study examines the Gebeng – Kuala Terengganu coastal route as a case study to identify the significant coastal landscape characters that have potentials to be enhanced for tourism. From the questionnaire surveys responded by 200 people comprising of locals, domestic tourists and international tourists, the findings revealed that recreational activities, infrastructure, accessibility, rural culture and traditional architecture are the most significant criteria for a rural coastal route. The presence of these criteria is fundamental to the development of the coastal route for tourism

This paper aims to elaborate on how the roles, responsibilities and good practices can join in the enterprise of sustaining the heritage of Malay wood carving as reflected in the case of Adiguru kraf (master craftsman), Abd. Muhaimin Hasbollah from Temerloh, Pahang. The rationale is that virtues of research in understanding the roles and responsibilities of Adiguru Kraf, through his craft practices in sustaining the heritage of Malay wood carving is relatively novel and vital for recognition. Therefore, the main objective of this research was to identify the key components of his involvements in sustaining the wood carving industry. This is essential as the Malay wood carving is traditionally associated with the making of craft that requires manual skill and craftsmanship, while its production is to exercise skill based on knowledge and experiences. A qualitative interview with Abd. Muhaimin was conducted and it has set out the context of a master craftsman, an inheritor of heritage carving and practices, in relation to his roles and responsibilities that reflect his title as Adiguru Kraf. The investigation has led to the understanding of his characteristics and how he produced his works with some levels of exclusiveness, peacefulness, and purposefulness. The outcome and contribution of the paper is a better understanding of the roles of the master craftsman, which may become inspiration for the younger generation of woodcarvers to excel in their profession. Understanding of his roles in relation to the professional virtues and craft production is essential because of the potential and value of eliciting and transmitting of his knowledge and skill for the development of wood carving craft and industry

The role of the form is an important one too, but only inasmuch as it supplements and enhances function

THE CHANGING ROLE OF THE STATE AND MARKET IN LOW COST HOUSING PROVISION IN MALAYSIA

    Get PDF
Since 1990s the global trend in housing provision shows a shift towards greater market role including for low income housing. Increasingly the state relied on market to provide low income housing and confined its role as enabler and facilitator to support the market. Housing provision refers to process of housing production and consumption or allocation by the consumers. Thus, the analysis in this paper focused on the role of the state and market in low cost housing production and allocation process. The findings showed the state gradually began to retreat from direct low cost housing provision and relied on market since 1990s. Despite economic crisis in 1997-1998 the market still played significance role in low cost housing production. Instead the state focused on solving housing problem among the squatters and revived the economy through public housing programmes. However in terms of low cost housing allocation, the state still retained control since 1950s. This explained the unique features of low cost housing provision system in Malaysia
