Carved Arabesques in Malay Traditional Houses: Skill, Tradition and Preservation of Identity

    Get PDF
This study aims to explore the placement and fabrication of the wood carvings within the old Kelantan and Terengganu timber houses. The main objective of this study was to examine the placement of wood carvings in the houses with emphasis on its fabrication as house components. Non-interactive and interactive methods of data collection were employed as research tactics. The non-interactive method involved archival review of 25 sets of measured drawings of the Kelantan and Terengganu timber houses from the Centre for Study of Built Environment in the Malay World at the Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. The interactive method involved semi-structured interviews with five woodcarvers to obtain their verification on the findings from the analytical review which served as the primary data. The study found that architectural components of the houses especially perforated ventilation panels of walls, doors and windows were fabricated in different composition of carvings with intricate arabesque design. Regularity in the placement of these components give spatial identity to the principal spaces such as ‘rumah ibu’ (core house), ‘serambi’ (verandah) and main bedrooms. Fabrication of the carvings as housecomponents was in parallel with their structural layouts and functions. This architectural inclination addresses the relationship of creativity, skill and intrinsic knowledge of the Malay craftsmen in keeping the tradition upon the exquisite forms of the houses in general and the carved arabesques in particular. The regional identity of the carvings has been practically and consistently sustained through ages, which suggests preservation of architectural identity within the traditional living environment.&nbsp

EVALUATION ON ACOUSTICAL PERFORMANCE OF CLASSROOM SPATIAL AND LAYOUT ARRANGEMENT BY USING COMPUTER SIMULATION

    Get PDF
A classroom should be created to accomplish good acoustical conditions in order to support an effective learning process. Study shows that one of the ultimate significant solutions around acoustic issues in classroom is by changing the seating arrangement to establish the best and functional proximity for students and improve their performance. The objective of this research is to identify various seating arrangements of classroom, namely traditional arrangement – rows and columns, modular arrangement, horseshoe arrangement and stadium arrangement and evaluate their acoustical performance in the classroom by using computer simulation, ODEON Room Acoustic Software. The base model of the classroom is derived according to study done in 2018, School A which fulfills least of the acoustical criteria with poor speech transmission index. The results were analyzed and compared based on two basic evaluation criteria: i) Reverberation Time (RT), ii) Speech Transmission Index (STI). From the results, it was found that modular arrangement has the best reverberation time among all the seating arrangements while horseshoe arrangement achieved the best speech intelligibility among all. It has also been found that reverberation time of a classroom can be decreased by decreasing the room volume and adding higher absorption material to the classroom

Environment Attitude Of The People And Stakeholders Towards Urban Biodiversity In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

    Get PDF
Urban biodiversity and wildlife management have been accepted as important ecological components of the urban environment. The world population is increasing very rapidly, overwhelming all efforts in urban wildlife protection and management. The urban population is growing at a much faster rate than the population as a whole. In 2009, there were 3.42 billion people living in towns and cities and this is predicted to increase to 6.3 billion by 2050. This poses major challenges to those responsible for the provision of green spaces and for preserving the biodiversity of urban areas. It is reasonably clear that biodiversity protection and management are deficient in almost all cities in developing countries. The deficiencies are not the same in all cities, but they generally relate to the perceptions of citizens and stakeholders.Urban green space and biodiversity are crucial in achieving sustainable cities because they involve social, economic and environmental issues and, if managed properly, result in ecological benefits for the cities’ inhabitants. However, in Malaysia, landscape and urban green space have received little attention in land use planning. In Malaysia, very limited research has been undertaken to gain an understanding of people’s preferences towards biodiversity such as wildlife. Furthermore, there is limited understanding of people’s preferences on urban biodiversity either in the single species approach or in their general preferences. Kuala Lumpur aims to promote and improve the quality of its living environment and to develop a sustainable approach for the development of urban green space. Thus, it is important to understand the attitude of people towards local urban parks and biodiversity especially wildlife and how it relates to the planning and development of green open spaces

The Alleviation Of Rural Poverty in Malaysia: The Role Of Zakat A Case Study

This study focuses on the factors contributing to the lack of emphasis by the Kedah Department of Zakat (KDoZ), Malaysia on the alleviation of poverty among the rural poor through zakat capital assistance programmes and employment opportunities. In this study, seven research questions were outlined. A mixed-methods study was developed to answer research questions 1, 2, 3 and 4. Research questions 5, 6 and 7 were answered using qualitative data. Quantitative data was collected from questionnaire. The sample size was 406 participants from among the capable poor who can work which received annual monetary assistance. Qualitative data was generated from the interviews with KDoZ officers (n=11) and participants for the qualitative method were selected purposefully. The responses to research questions 1, 2,3 and 4 show that the majority of the respondents were not aware of the existence of SHS. Respondents’ awareness towards SHS programme is significantly related with the socio-economic and zakat assistance characteristics which are rate of districts’ collection, number of years respondents receive zakat and distance of respondents’ house from the KDoZ office. 80% of respondents interested to apply for the SHS programme. The factors contributing to apply SHS were current zakat assistance, current income, economic activity, lack of motivation and constraints. Furthermore, the lack of interest in SHS was significantly related to the age of the respondents. In answering research question 5, there were 3 factors leading to this approach by the KDoZ: 1) the KDoZ faces the constraints of low zakatcollection caused by two subscales; 2) a high rate of failure among the recipients or the poor in economic activities; and 3) incompetence of members of the KDoZ committee. The answers to research question 6 were difficulties in dealing with the poor, responsibility of the state government, and the committee’s lack of interest. The answers to research question 7 were factors related to politics, the committee and priority in providing financial assistance. There are 5 main findings which hindered the effective use of zakat, which are capitalist thinking, local collection rates, avoiding the query of Sultan, a large number of committee members and limited zakat funds allocated for administration. Finally, recommendations were provided to overcome these problems. Several additional recommendations for future research have emerged from this study and these have been briefly outlined

Architectural Photogrammetry for the Recording of Heritage Buildings: An Overview

    Get PDF
In heritage documentation, recording techniques can be divided into two broad categories, namely photographic and non-photographic methods. Photographic methods include a photographic image is fundamental to the whole recording process, such as computer-rectified photography, photogrammetry and laser scanning. Whereby, non- photographic methods are including hand survey and theodolite-based measurements. Three main criteria should be considered when making decisions about the specification of the recording: the cost, technical considerations or logistics and, finally, whether the survey will fulfil the technical and academic requirements and be understood by the end user. Moreover, the choice of the most appropriate and reliable recording methods will depend on the scale and type of building, level of accuracy, and level of recording needed. This paper discusses the application of photogrammetry techniques in the recording of heritage buildings. The principles, accuracy and challenges of the technique are also described

Satisfaction of Public Clients' Patronage of Construction Contractors in Nigeria

    Get PDF
The choice of a proper contractor increases the chance of successful completion of the construction project which fulfills the client’s goals of keeping the schedule of the cost, time and quality thereby enhancing satisfaction. This research seeks to determine the areas of satisfaction expected by public clients from local and foreign contractors in Nigeria. Primary data were collected through the administration of questionnaire to the government parastatals and ministries in Lagos state. The data collected from the questionnaire were analyzed using frequency tables, Mean Item Score and Mann-Whitney (U-test) test. The study revealed that public clients derive more satisfaction from foreign contractors than their local counterpart in the areas of quality performance and standard of workmanship while more satisfaction is derived from local contractors than their foreign counterparts in the areas of time and cost performance. The study also concluded that the considerations by public client in choosing the contractors determine the satisfaction derived from the project. The research suggests that local contractors should embark on measures that will improve their quality performance and standard of workmanship in order to stop the preference given to foreign contractors
