    Constructivist Problem Based Learning Technique and the Academic Achievement of Physics Students with Low Ability Level in Nigerian Secondary Schools

    The study investigated the effects of constructivist problem based learning technique on the academic achievement of physics students with low ability levels in Nigeria secondary schools. Pre-test-Post-test control group design was adopted for the study. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 2 schools out of 40 co-educational secondary schools in Taraba state. 105 senior secondary school II physics students were used for the study. Physics Achievement Test (PAT) and physics Ability Level Test (PALT) were used to collect data. The kuder-Richardson coefficient of internal consistency for PAT and PALT were 0.72 and 0.76 respectively. Three hypotheses were tested at p<0.05 level of significance using t- test analysis. The result of the findings showed that the physics students with low ability level taught with problem based learning technique performed significantly better than those taught with conventional learning method. Also, student taught with problem based learning technique performed significantly better than those taught with conventional method. There was no significant gender difference in the performance of students taught with problem based learning technique. It is recommended that problem-based learning technique should be used in schools to teach various concepts in physics

    Comparison of Science High School, Fine Art School and General High School Students’ Environmental Consciousness and Their Attitudes Towards Environment

    In this study, the purpose is to compare 10th grade science high school, fine art school and general high school students’ attitudes towards environment in Adiyaman. These three high schools are different in terms of their educational and foundational missions. 212 students from science high school, fine art school and general high school have participated in this study. In this study, scale named attitudes towards environment, which was developed by Gökce for determining the elementary school students’ attitudes towards environment, was used after modification of the items. Likert type survey was used in this study with the 0.67 Cronbach alpha value. Research data were presented by number, percent distribution, arithmetic mean, t-test, and one-way ANOVA to compare attitudes towards environment points. Attitudes towards environment were considered with reflect to school, department, and gender. According to the findings of the research, students in general high school had greater attitude scores and have more positive attitudes towards environment comparing to students in fine art high school and science high school. It was also observed that students in social science departments and girls had more positive attitudes comparing to students in science and Turkish-Mathematics (TM) and boys respectively

    Introducing exploration geophysics to students using Ohm’s law: A case study of prospecting for groundwater by Hlangabeza high school students in Nkayi rural district of Zimbabwe

    This study sought to explain how a familiar physics topic of Ohm’s law of electricity can be used to explore the interior of the earth. The paper gives the theory on the resistivity method of exploration and how it is used for constant separation traversing and vertical electrical sounding. A fieldwork done by physics students from Hlangabeza high school, in Nkayi district, Matebeleland north province, Zimbabwe is given in detail. This involved locating a drilling site for a groundwater borehole. The Schlumberger depth sounding data where interpreted using a computer freeware. This was used to computer a layered earth model using least square technique to match the theoretical apparent resistivity curve as close as possible to the field curve. This provided depth information of the weathered layer above the bedrock at selected site. The overall results suggest that teaching physics can easily be done through putting theory into practice. The fieldworks demonstrated that they prop up the development of expert science behavior in students

    The Effect of Between Class Ability Grouping on 7th Grade Students’ Academic Achievement on the Unit “If there were no pressure?” In Science and Technology Education

    The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of between class ability grouping on 7th grade students’ academic achievement on the unit “If there were no pressure?” in Science and Technology Education. The study was conducted in the second semester of 2006-2007 academic year within a primary school with between class ability grouping in Aydın. The sample of the study is made of total 84 students among the 7th grades from the selected school which has between class ability grouping. “Science Education achievement test” developed by the researchers was used for data collection. Co-variance analysis was performed for analyzing the data gathered in the study. Significant differences were found among the ability grouping classes with regard to achievement test scores (p<0.05). The difference was observed between high-medium classes, high-low classes and mediumlow classes. While significant difference was not found among achievement scores of the female students in ability grouping classes (p>0.05), this was reverse for the male students (significant difference was found among the male students with regard to achievement test scores)

    Thoughts of Pupils at Primary School Level about the Practical Usage of Electricity as a Means and the Source of Energy

    This study was made to determine whether or not the primary school students` have the concept of “electricity” in their life and what they know about electricity. This page was focused on the students’ thoughts about the use of electricity. This application was completed in a village school. Although there was a grade difference between classes, the answers which all of the students gave were similar to each other. The students replied the questions because of the concepts which they learned and saw through their social life not their book knowledge’s. The interview was applied with students in a suitable class in their own school. The questions were discussed with students alternatively. The students were wanted to write down their own answers on papers by taking place on desks. Finally, when the students’ answers were appraised, it was observed that some students had very interesting ideas about the produce of electricity
