    Implementation of a rehabilitation program in a virtual reality for post-covid-19 patients - preliminary results

    This study aims to present the preliminary results of a novel rehabilitation program for post-COVID-19 patients that incorporates virtual reality (VR). The study included 20 patients whohad previously been affected by SARS-CoV-2 and participated in inpatient pulmonaryrehabilitation. These patients were randomly divided into either a VR group or a control group.The both the VR group and the control group participated in the same rehabilitation program,which consisted of exercise capacity training on a cycle ergometer, breathing exercises,resistance and general fitness training, and relaxation. Each training component wasperformed once a day. The groups that participated differed based on the training settingsthey received on the cycle ergometer and relaxation training. The study assessed exercisetolerance (6MWT), lung function (FEV1, FVC, TLC, FEV1%VC), stress levels (PSS-10), quality oflife (WHOQOL-BREF), likewise anxiety and depression symptoms (HADS). The results showedthat the VR group had a statistically significant improvement in all of the functional capacitytests compared to the control group. The VR group also had a statistically significantimprovement in quality of life compared to the control group. These results suggest that theinclusion of VR in rehabilitation programs may be beneficial for post-COVID-19 patients. DOI: https://doi.org/10.24040/sjss.2022.8.2.77-8

    Injuries in sports karate

    Karate is one of the most popular sport. It belongs to contact martial arts, which causes a number of injuries. Injuries do not occur only during the match; they mostly occur during training, warm-up, or training of techniques or situations. Factors that affect the incidence of injuries are many, whether it is age, gender, experience of the athlete, weight, physical fitness, or mental state of the athlete. The most common areas of the body injured are face and head, lower extremities, the trunk, upper extremities. Awareness of coaches and athletes about injuries in their treatment and prevention will help reduce the incidence of injuries in karate, as well as in other sports.     Sports recreation program with pre-modeled athletic throwing content

    By using various sports recreation programs, we try to reduce the negative effects of living in today's age. This study defines a sports-recreational program based on athletic throwing exercises. The reduced amount of muscle mass that comes with age and thus the deficit of strength, coordination and balance cause difficulty in movement and the inability to perform harmonious movements. The decline in motor skills that comes at the time of involution can be quite slowed down through recreational programs that target these abilities. Considering that sports recreation is in question, the intensity and scope of action is logically significantly less than competitive training. In addition to the basic disciplines of shot put, discus throw, javelin throw, and hammer throw, the recreational program also used a large number of exercises that throwers use in their training as ancillary exercises as well as exercises with free weights. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the importance of recreational exercise and health and the wider sports and recreational content of athletic throwing.     The impact of strength training with a slow eccentric phase of movement on lower limb mobility, sprint and jump for distance performance

    The aim of the study was to assess theimpact of strength training with a sloweccentric phase of movement on therange of mobility of the lower limbjoints, sprint performance and powerof football players. The study included15 men aged: 21 years ± 5, height: 175cm ± 10, body weight: 70 kg ± 18, BMI:22.9 ± 6.6 who train football in thesenior team of the LZS Victoria Żyrowaclub. The mobility of the lower limb inthe sagittal plane was examined. Asprint performance test was carried outover a distance of ten and thirtymeters. In order to test thecompetitors' power, a jump fordistance test was performed. Circuittraining consisting of 9 strengthexercises was held once a week for aperiod of six weeks. The competitors'task was to perform 4 full circuits. Thetraining program included a commandto perform the concentric phase ofmovement at a rapid pace. In theeccentric phase, movement was to becontrolled and extended. The trainingused showed a significant impact onincreasing the range of joint mobilityfor football players. Muscle groupsmost at risk of injury like hamstrings,hip flexors, plantar flexors of the foothave been functionally stretched. Thetraining had also a positive effect onsprint performance and increasing theplayer's power, tested by jump fordistance

    Altitude training experience of italian race walking coaches

    Altitude training is a common practice in endurance athletes. It ismainly used to obtain improvement in performance thanks toadaptation at both central (e.g. maximal oxygen uptake andhaematological parameters) and peripheral level (e.g. mitochondrialefficiency and muscle buffering). In the literature has been reportedthat also race walkers underwent altitude training camp duringannual training program, the methodologies involved were howeverdifferent due to different aims, thus dissimilar results were found. Theaim of this paper was to understand in which extent Italian racewalkers coaches use altitude training. Four coaches wereinterviewed in order to obtain their experience about altitude training(camp numbers, altitude level, training methodologies, timing andgoals). All coaches utilized live high-train high methods for law (inItaly artificial hypoxia is illegal) and logistics reasons. The altitudehigh was different with half using moderate altitude and others highaltitude. All reported to use altitude training mainly for improvingathletes' performance due to peripheral (moderate altitude) andcentral and peripheral (high altitude) enhancement. All coaches paidattention to acclimatisation period (both at altitude and back to sealevel), which is subjective and altitude-experience dependent,however it lasts no longer than ten days. The training intensity waskept as close to sea level as possible by adopting interval and highintensitytraining. Overall coaches' answers pointed out a greatknowledge of the physiological and training basis of altitude training.The efficacy of any training for elite athletes is met only when anadequate stimulus is given to athletes, and also altitude training hasto follow this rule. Along this line of thought coaches understand thatonly living high with some training volume cannot meet the efficacycriteria. Thus, let athletes train with an intensity as close to sea levelas possible in order to give and higher stimulus and to gain morebenefits when athletes will be back at sea level

    The effects of fitness ball exercise programme on female students posture

    The prevalence of lifestyle diseases and the contemporaryhypokinetic lifestyle have an impact on the health of female studentsat secondary schools. The teenage girls support this negative effectby their passive presence or absence in sports and physicaleducation lessons due to several objective and subjective reasons.Therefore, the partial research was aimed at determining an effect offit ball exercise programme on their body posture and at wideningthe knowledge concerning the significance and impact of exerciseprogrammes in sports and physical education lessons. Our sampleexperimental and control group consisted of the teenage girlsstudying the third grade at one secondary school in the town of L.Mikuláš. We used a standardized body posture assessment methodand the qualitative and quantitative data were processed by meansof a non-parametric statistical hypothesis test (Wilcoxon signed-ranktest/Wtest). The results and findings significantly (p < 0.01) confirmedthe impact of our exercise programme on the monitored determinantof the musculoskeletal system in experimental group. Consequently,we proved the effectiveness of the fit ball exercise programme andits utilisation in sports and physical education lessons

    Changes of kinematic parameters during the taper period of the European 100 m hurdles champion in the U18 category

    In this work, we tried to generalize the professional and coaching experience of the European champion Laura Frličková in the U18 category, based on the kinematic analysis of the 100 m hurdles run in the taper period. We pointed out the individual performance growth of the athlete in the macro cycle, but also from the point of view of long-term sports training. The improvement in sports performance, reflected in the enhanced kinematic parameters of hurdle sprints by a representative of the Slovak Republic, is based on the individualized dosing of training loads within specific microcycles. The dosing of load dynamics is based on respecting the individuality of the athlete’s unique adaptation mechanisms. We recognize that the effective development of specialized hurdling skills into rhythmic units for hurdle sprints requires the long-term application of specific training stimuli for female hurdlers.     Stride patterns in women's 400m hurdles: decisive factors or simple numbers?

    The study analysed the impact of the number of steps between hurdles on the final result in the women's 400 m hurdles, using data from 141 championship final races from 1978 to 2022. The aim was to determine the standard stride rhythm, the influence of the minimal number of steps on athletic performance, and the relationship between stride rhythm in the initial and final phases of the race. The results showed that the best athletes cover the first 5–6 intervals between hurdles with a 15-step rhythm, with some even starting the race with 14 steps. In the second part of the distance, the number of steps increases (to 15–16 for the best athletes, 17–18 for others). The greatest changes in stride rhythm occur in the second half of the race, particularly between the 7th and 10th hurdles and in the last 40 meters. Correlation analysis indicated that minimal changes in the number of steps on the second curve (between the 4th and 8th hurdles) have a significant impact on the final race time (r=0.30, p<0.001). A smaller number of steps in subsequent parts of the distance is a key factor determining a high level of performance in this event. DOI: https://doi.org/10.24040/sjss.2024.9.2.38-4
