Fascial manipulation and its application for low back pain treatment

    No full text
Low back pain is one of the most common musculosceletal disorder and it has multifactorialetiology. It is considered to be the leading cause of global disability. It is the most frequentcause of activity limitation that can, eventually, result in disability, decreased quality of life, and work absenteeism. Low back pain manifests in different forms - acute, subacute andchronic. Within clinical examination it is a collected anamnesis, a general examination andfunctional testing from each patient. The importance of physical activity in the treatment oflow back pain is generally accepted. However, an increase in physical activity has beensuggested to be both a preventive factor and a possible risk factor for low back pain. Thereis an evidence for an association between high physical workloads and back injury.Treatment of low back pain includes many different types of exercises and physicaltherapy. Fascial manipulations has showed a great effectiveness in the treatment of lowback pain in the general population, but also among the athletes. DOI: https://doi.org/10.24040/sjss.2022.8.2.2-1

Gender differences in the level of interactions between the physical activity and quality of life of 10 years old children

    No full text
This article deals about the interactions between a physical activity, joy of movement andquality of life of 10 years old boys and girls from Slovak primary schools. The PAQ, PACESand Children´s Worlds the international Survey of Children´s Well-Being (ISCWeB) surveyswere used to obtain the data. The survey was attended by 94 boys and 86 girls from primaryschools. Despite differentiated sports level of boys and girls, the extracurricular physicalactivity per week is on the same level. Girls prefer unorganized physical activity, which bringsthem joy. Higher summary score values are found in girls' side in the area of a home, family, friends, school, self-evaluation, orientation to their future, and their leisure time. Subjectiveevaluation of the material area has the boys and girls on the same level. Correlation analysisbetween defined factors confirmed the differentiated impact of extracurricular activities and thejoy of movement on interactions with areas of quality of life of 10-year-old boys and girls. Boysshow a higher frequency of positive interactions than girls. Higher closeness to areas of qualityof life than the level of physical activity is demonstrated by the joy of movement. Ground reaction forces during a basketball dunk

    No full text
Basketball is one of the most popularsports worldwide. The basketball dunkuses a very powerful jumping motion toforcefully push a basketball through a goalpositioned at a height of 10 feet (3.05m). Inthe modern game of basketball, the dunk isvery popular due to its very high field goalpercentage. Due to lack of research on thisevent, the purpose of this study was toexamine the kinetic variables of peak force, peak power, rate of force development, impulse and time during the concentricphase of the five most commonly usedvariations of a basketball dunk: one-leg left(1LL), one-leg right (1LR), two-leg left-right(2LLR), two-leg right-left (2LRL) and two legstationary (2LS). Ten healthy recreationallyactive men (X±SD, age=22.4±2.5,weight=89±6.3kg, height=192.8±4.9cm,vertical jump=73.7±12.4cm) who werecapable of dunking a basketballvolunteered to participate in this researchstudy. Kinetic variables measured in thisstudy were obtained from a force plate anddata acquisition system sampling at1000Hz. Based on our data we concludethat the basketball dunk is a very powerfulactivity that requires high levels of strengthand power. Our data suggest that the mosttime consuming dunk approach was a 2LS(0.820±0.116sec) while the fastest dunkapproach was 1LL (0.311±0.039sec), whichcan serve as a guideline for which dunkshould be utilized at certain times duringan on-court game performance. Thehighest peak power output was observedfor 2LS (6261.9±1104.1W) which also hadthe lowest rate of force development(5851.3±3069.5N/sec) and impulse(408.2±41.1N/sec). The highest peak forceswere observed for 2LLR (3158.4±376.3N)and 2LRL (3206.8±518.2N) dunkapproaches. Knowing the specificbiomechanical characteristics of a motioncan help target optimal training for eachindividual and lead to enhanced basketballperformance, specifically the basketballdunk in this case. In conclusion, this studyserves as a foundation and guideline forfurther research by presenting the previously unexplored kinetic andkinematic variables of a basketball dunk

The usage of MDT in high-performance parasport

    No full text
In this article we give arguments to support the usage of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy® (MDT) as a very suitable method in high-performance parasport. We do encourage the usage based on our recent intensive work with the paralympians. Physiotherapist in any paralympic sport has to fulfill all the tasks his or her colleagues have with elite able-bodied athletes and in addition to that make sure that whatever disability the Paralympian has is not being worsened by the high-performance sport. We suggest MDT as a choice that has the capacity to fit the task. Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy®, also known as the McKenzie Method, is one of the most evidence based non-invasive approaches to assessment and management of musculoskeletal disorders. The concept of MDT draws from symptomatic and mechanical responses of the patient’s body during functional tests in positions, movements and repeated movements. Based on these responses is a clinician able to classify the problem and choose the appropriate treatment strategy. MDT uses the very same principles for the extremities that it uses for the spine.
