    Assessment and role of physical activity as a factor affecting subjective perception of students' satisfaction

    The paper aims to provide analysis of Slovak university students’ physical activity during state-ordered distance learning in the academic year 2021/2022 (the COVID-19 pandemic). The data were obtained in form of a questionnaire survey. In the analytical part, the focus is on weekly time that students devoted to regular exercise and quantification of physical activity versus subjective perception of selected physical and psychological satisfaction and health indicators. To meet the paper’s objectives, a two-sample t-test was used to test statistical significance of differences between men and women, and parametric and non-parametric correlation analysis methods. In terms of age structure majority of students falls into young adults’ category, in which physical activity has only a small positive effect on the subjective perception of satisfaction. Majority of students exercised on average up to 50 minutes per week, which is less than weekly physical activity during regular face-to-face lessons of Physical Education.     The effect of collisions and personal fights in ice hockey on the spine

    Ice hockey is considered a contact sport, during which there are personal fights, collisions or sudden accelerations and braking. All the listed movement factors affect the functionality of the spine. Thanks to its physiological curvature into lordosis and kyphosis and the intervertebral discs, the spine has absorption capacity, but even that has its limits. In case of sharp impacts, soft structures can be damaged, e.g. sprain, dislocation, contusion, tear or tear, or there is damage to the bone system - fractures, ruptures, vertebral displacements. Soft structures include muscles, ligaments and intervertebral discs. Among the most common diagnoses caused by impacts while playing ice hockey are intraspongy disc herniations (Schmorl's nodes), unilateral, bilateral to circular disc herniations, retrolistheses, ventrolistheses and edema of the bone marrow of the vertebra. Depending on the location, lumbar vertebrae and shoulders are most often damaged, less often cervical vertebrae, wrists and knees. DOI: https://doi.org/10.24040/sjss.2024.9.1.75-7

    Overview of international track and field competitions of the V4 countries and participation of their athletes at major competitions

    International track and field competitions are nowadays an essential part of qualifying for major competitions. In the long term, Slovakia has fewer such competitions and fewer Slovak athletes qualify for major competitions, so we decided to find out how other V4 countries - the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary - are doing. The study focuses on an overview of the V4 countries' international track and field competitions and the participation of their athletes in the major competitions in 2024. The data was obtained through a document study, mainly from the websites of World Athletics, Olympics and European Athletics. By analysing the data for 2024, we found that Slovakia organised 9 international track and field competitions, which was significantly less compared to the Czech Republic (21) and Poland (22). Hungary, on the other hand, organised only 4 international track and field competitions in 2024, which were part of the World Athletics Continental Tour. The lower number of competitions organised in Slovakia also had a negative impact on the participation of athletes in major competitions, which was significantly lower in 2024 compared to the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary. This fact was also reflected in the representation of athletes of individual countries in track and field events in the Top 100 rankings recorded by World Athletics. While Slovakia has 11 athletes in this ranking, the Czech Republic has 54 athletes, Poland 86 athletes and Hungary 40 athletes. The participation of athletes in domestic international track and field competitions provides athletes with the opportunity to gain valuable points for the world ranking, which is an important prerequisite for qualification for major competitions. The results of our research highlight the importance of organizing international track and field competitions for the development of track and field in individual countries and emphasize the need for systematic building of sports infrastructure and support for talented athletes.  DOI: https://doi.org/10.24040/sjss.2024.9.2.74-8

    Comparison of vertical jump heights in a Czech women's top-league volleyball team

    Vertical jumps (vj) are a crucial component of performance in volleyball, with different playing positions demanding varying jump heights. The objective of this study was to analyze the differences in vj height among players from various positions in a czech women’s top-league team. Players (n = 20) underwent testing over three seasons. Vertical jump was assessed using the optojump system across different jump tests: squat jump (sj), countermovement jump (cmj), and cmj with arm swing (cmjfa). Players were categorized by positions: blockers (n = 5), attackers (n = 8), setters (n = 4), and liberos (n = 3). (average jump heights in the order of cmj; cmjfa; sj). Blockers (28.4 ± 4.8; 32.4 ± 4.8; 25.6 ± 3.7 cm), attackers (29.2 ± 5.9; 32 ± 9 cm; 31.5 ± 2.4 cm), setters (25.7 ± 3.2 cm; 27.7 ± 5.8; 26.6 cm) and liberos (27.6 ± 1.6; 32.4 ± 3.3; 26.2 ± 2.8 cm). Blockers and attackers displayed higher vj values compared to setters and liberos, however, the results from the two-way anova across individual tests did not show statistically significant differences in average jump heights among the positions. The findings of this study could assist in optimizing training plans and personalizing conditioning preparation for volleyball players. DOI: https://doi.org/10.24040/sjss.2024.9.suppl.145-15

    Supporting physical activity among students at VSB-TUO

    The transition to university, particularly during the first year of study, presents students with numerous challenges and changes. One of these is a shift in lifestyle, often accompanied by reduced levels of physical activity. A lack of physical activity can contribute to issues such as weight gain, unhealthy eating habits, sleep disturbances, and other problems that subsequently affect not only academic performance but also the overall quality of personal life. The aim of this study was to examine how students at VSB-TUO perceive support for physical activity within the context of their university studies. To achieve this aim, we developed an online questionnaire, which was completed by 1,470 respondents, including 1,042 males and 428 females. The questionnaire consisted of 30 questions divided into three main thematic areas and further segmented into nine sections, allowing for branching based on the specific segmentation of respondents. Of these, 25 questions were closed-ended, four were semi-closed, and one was open-ended. Data collection took place in February and March 2024, during the introductory sessions of selected courses at the beginning of the summer semester. The responses revealed that after starting university, 61% of students experienced no change in the frequency of their physical activity. For an additional 25%, the frequency of physical activity increased due to various forms of support. Only 14% of respondents reported a decrease in activity frequency. Based on the results of our study, we conclude that the forms of support implemented at VSB-TUO enable more than four-fifths of first-year students to maintain or increase their frequency of physical activity after entering university.  DOI: https://doi.org/10.24040/sjss.2024.9.suppl.176-18

Je autorom projektov prvých mrakodrapov v čínskom Šanghaji, ako aj mnohých ďalších významných budov. Počas študentských rokov navrhol projekt, podľa ktorého postavili kaplnku Panny Márie Kráľovnej vo Vyhniach. Všetky jeho diela slúžia dodnes svojmu účelu a patria k národným kultúrnym pamiatkam na Slovensku aj v Číne
