Walmart Inc. in light of COVID-19 pandemic: the financial assessment
Get PDFMotivation: The pandemic\u27s trajectory is challenging to be forecast. The COVID-19 pandemic modifications can cause the growth of infected people. Furthermore, the defined financial activity resulting from additional lockdowns may have a meaningful contrary impact on aggregate demand. The paper can motivate further study and examination in the field of financial indicators of the Walmart Inc. and other inspiring research.
Aim: The research regards the selected Walmart\u27s financial indicators during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of the paper is the assessment of the financial situation of the Walmart Inc. as an American multinational retail corporation in light of COVID-19.
Materials and methods: The paper is using of statistical, dynamics, comparative, documentation analysis.
Results: The discussion shows that the multinational corporation within the retail sector succeeded in the research period. Walmart implemented the suitable mechanisms, solutions, and actions that mitigated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and, in consequence, positioned the world pioneer in multinational corporation retail in the leading rank against the rest of the entities competing in that diversified market

Get PDFThe publication of Shakespeare\u27s First Folio in 1623 marked the beginning of a period, lasting over three centuries, in which the critical reception of Edgar in King Lear was often unenthusiastic, judging by the opinions of subsequent theatre practitioners and literary critics. There were voices that questioned Edgar\u27s relevance to the plot and considered him a superfluous character. Moreover, Edgar\u27s heteroglossia was increasingly toned down in stage interpretations, removing the complex polyphony of Shakespeare\u27s character by omitting lines given to the character in the Quarto version of the play. Since the mid-twentieth century, however, the critical (and textual) reception of Edgar has changed, as evidenced by the research of textual scholars who seek to preserve the ethical meaning of Edgar in the play. This has resulted in Edgar\u27s text being revisited in stage performances. In addition, recent critics are paying more attention to Edgar\u27s dexterity in the use of language and disguise, which they believe restores the character\u27s role as crucial to the play\u27s plot

Get PDFThe present paper analyses the fates of the native nouns illness and sickness and those of the French borrowing malady in Middle English. Focusing on the regional and temporal dimensions of their rivalry, the study uses the evidence from the Innsbruck Corpus of Middle English Prose (ICMEP, Markus 2008), a collection of 129 works of Middle English prose. The analysis also makes use of other databases such as Collins English Dictionary (CED), the Historical Thesaurus of English (HTE), Middle English Dictionary online (MED), Merriam-Webster Dictionary (MWD), and the Oxford English Dictionary online (OED). The degree of the adaptability of the terms in question is best reflected in their varied frequency in the ICMEP’s texts. The tentative research results place malady (107 attestations in total) far behind its Germanic equivalent sickness (701 attestations). A single instance of illness testifies to its low recognisability in the Innsbruck Corpus of Middle English Prose, probably due to its being often replaced by sickness, which leads to a considerable reduction in the use of the term
Impact of cooperation flexibility on innovation flexibility in SMEs
No full textResearch background: Flexibility has become a possible means for manufacturing companies to better compete in competitive markets. Furthermore, innovations are perceived as an important factor in company strategy, which can differentiate the company from the competition.
Purpose of the article: This present study investigates the problems of cooperation flexibility and innovation flexibility in manufacturing companies among electrical engineering companies in the Czech Republic. The aim of this paper is to identify the impact of cooperation flexibility on innovation flexibility in small and medium-sized manufacturing companies.
Methods: A questionnaire addressed to SMEs in the form of the Likert scale was prepared to gather information about cooperation flexibility and innovation flexibility. All parts of the questionnaire were tested using Cronbach Alpha. Spearman correlation and regression analysis were used for analysis.
Findings & value added: The results of the research show that external cooperation flexibility and internal cooperation flexibility is related to innovation flexibility in SMEs. Results of the research show that there is a positive relationship 1) between external cooperation flexibility and innovation flexibility and 2) between innovation flexibility and business performance at SMEs. The findings of the research contribute to an understanding of the relationship between cooperation flexibility, innovation flexibility and also innovation performance. The novelty value of this paper lies in its perception of flexibility as having two parts, namely external (with suppliers and customers) and internal cooperation flexibility. In addition, innovation flexibility was investigated in two fields, product, and accompanying services to products. The view mentioned provides a complex view of flexibility
Links between crime and economic development: EU classification
No full textResearch background: Although some authors propose that economic growth should reduce crime rates as wider opportunities to earn money in a legal way diminish the incentives to commit illegal activities and lead to rising costs of the latter, the results of many studies indicate that an increase in crime rates is also possible under the conditions of economic growth. There are also differing views on the relationship between various economic indicators and crime rates as well as the nature of the relationship between the above-mentioned phenomena in the long and short run.
Purpose of the article: After classifying the EU member states by their crime and economic indicators, the main objective of the article is to assess the relationship between the crime and economic development and identify the causes of this relationship.
Methods: Systematic and comparative literature analysis, the Promethee and Entropy methods, Spearman?s correlation coefficient.
Findings & value added: The Promethee method, together with the Entropy method, were used to estimate the weights of the EU member states with respect to their crime and economic development indicators. The most pronounced differences were recorded in Portugal, Spain, and the Slovak Republic. The rankings estimated for the EU member states revealed that although economic situation affects crime rate, it can also be affected by the differences in cultural and political development. Scientific novelty lies in complementing the theory of the shadow economy with the results showing that compared to other crimes, corruption has the greatest weight when examining the relationship between economic development and crime. The practical significance of the research lies in classifying the EU member states into 4 groups with consideration of the relationship between crime and economic development, which may help public authorities to devise the target measures for the effective fight against crime given the nature of the relationship between crime and economic development
The economic valuation of ecosystem services: bibliometric analysis
No full textResearch background: The services provided by ecosystems are the main support for human populations and for the development of any type of activity. Today, the provision of these services is under threat. The economic valuation of ecosystem services is vital to design appropriate policies, define strategies and manage ecosystems.
Purpose of the article: The objective of this study is to analyse the evolution of research on the economic valuation of ecosystem services over the last two decades. More specifically, it aims firstly to identify the main agents driving research and, secondly, it seeks to synthesize in a single document the relevant information on the main economic valuation methods, relating them to the categories of services, ecosystems and regions where they have been employed.
Methods: A quantitative review was first carried out through a bibliometric analysis to identify the main drivers of this line of research and its development trends. Secondly, a qualitative review was conducted through a systematic review focusing on the most commonly used valuation techniques in relation to the characteristics of the service, the geographical scope and the ecosystem analysed.
Findings & value added: The main novelty of this work, compared to previous literature, is that the relationship between the study area, the type of ecosystem, the category of service and the economic valuation methodology are analysed for the first time. The results highlight the need to continue expanding knowledge in relation to the temporal and spatial scale in the economic value of ecosystem services, the subjective nature of the estimates and the heterogeneity between the different social sectors with respect to the benefit obtained
How Industry 4.0 supports the strategic agility of companies. A systematic literature review
No full textThe aim of the article is to identify and assess the state of knowledge in the field of using and supporting Industry 4.0 technologies for the development of companies\u27 strategic agility. In particular, it is of keen interest how the individual Industry 4.0 technologies selected by the authors support the attributes that contribute to strategic agility. The article uses a systematic literature review (SLR), and strives in a rigorous and reliable manner to organize knowledge of the use of Industry 4.0 technology in the development of strategic agility. The systematic review research procedure consists of a five-stage approach, including: formulation of the research questions and determination of the research objective, selection of the literature sample, evaluation of the identified papers, data analysis and synthesis, and reporting on the results. The applied research method allowed for synthesis and consolidation of the existing scientific achievements in the field of supporting Industry 4.0 technologies in the development of strategic agility in companies, as well as indication of the most desirable directions for further research. Simultaneously, the research results allowed a reasonable context for future research to be defined. The literature clearly indicates a scarcity of papers in the field of linking Industry 4.0 with the agility of companies, as well as a lack of information on the state of research in this area, both in theoretical and empirical terms. The use of artificial intelligence methods in the analysis of the results of vehicle braking deceleration tests in the diagnostics of the braking system of a motor vehicle
No full textThe article presents the concept of using an artificial neural network to approximate the parameters describing the vehicle braking process, from the point of view of the application of this method in the diagnostics of the braking system. The artificial neural network of non-linear autoregression was used to approximate the dependence of the braking deceleration and the pressure in the braking system. The effectiveness of the neural network was checked depending on the number of neurons in its hidden layer and on the applied learning algorithm. The operation of the neural network was verified based on the actual braking processes of the Skoda Octavia, carried out with different dynamics, with different car weights and different tire inflation pressures. After verifying the neural network, it was used to approximate the braking deceleration values for the pressure values exceeding those present in the input data set. This action allows the analysis of the possibility of the vehicle obtaining a braking deceleration, which qualifies its braking system as efficient. Two concepts of using a neural network to solve this problem were analyzed. Conclusions related to the validity of the development of the discussed methods were drawn
