Using machine learning to determine the positions of professional soccer players in terms of biomechanical variables
This study aimed to predict professional soccer players’ positions with machine learning according to certain locomotor demands. Data from 20 male professional soccer players (five defenders, eight midfielders, and seven attackers) from the same team were tracked daily with a global navigation satellite system. A total of 1910 individual training sessions were recorded. The 10-fold cross-validation method was used. Soccer player positions were predicted using predictive models created with random forest (RF), gradient boosting tree, bagging classification, and regression trees algorithms, and the results were evaluated with comprehensive performance measures. Ratios and an importance plot were used to analyze the importance of the variables according to their contributions to the estimation. The findings show that the RF model achieved 100% accuracy, which means that RF can predict all player positions (100%). Running distance (26.5%), total dis tance (17.2%), and player load (15.8%) were the three variables that contributed the most to the estimation of the RF model and were the most important factor in distinguishing player positions. Consequently, our proposed machine learning approach (RF model) can reduce false alarms and player mispositioning.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/
Evaluation of asian hornet (Vespa velutina) trappability in Alto-Minho, Portugal: commercial vs. artisanal equipment, human factors, geography, climatology, and vegetation
Trapping the Asian hornet remains a viable alternative to monitor its presence, dispersion,
and ecological niche. With the objective of evaluating the effectiveness of baits and traps, an Asian
hornet (Vespa velutina) capture trial was conducted using combinations of artisanal and commercial
baits and traps. The second objective was to explore the relationship between the species’ dispersal
patterns and the influence of human, geography, climate, and vegetation factors, to identify the
preferred conditions for its colonization. We identified beekeepers in the Alto Minho region of
Northern Portugal, where the different combinations of baits and traps were placed. The traps were
monitored from February to September 2023, and the captures were counted. The temporal variation
of the captures showed a first peak at the beginning of April, corresponding to primary workers. In
September, when the trial was halted, the second peak, corresponding to secondary workers, had
not yet been reached. The peaks of captures were used to fit models to allow the characterisation
of their ecological niche. Statistical analysis of the captures revealed no significant differences. It
was concluded that there is no advantage in using the commercial devices and baits tested. The
ecological niche where the higher number of captures is observed is characterised by an abundance
of vegetation, humidity, and higher temperatures. Elevation and slope also favour the presence of the

Context: The promotion of active, healthy, successful aging (SA) has been a path pointed out as a response to the challenges of population aging. However, Fernández-Ballesteros (2019) argues that there is no consensus on the definition, measurement, and criteria of SA. Over the last few decades, various theoretical models have been developed, including the MacArthur Foundation's biomedical model, the selective optimization model with compensation and the preventive and corrective proactivity model. However, recent studies have criticized the theoretical models of SA, emphasizing the importance of exploring the concept from the perspectives of laypersons, that is, ordinary people who are not experts in the field. The evaluation of SA from the perspective of laypersons is currently predominantly qualitative. However, Tong et al. (2022) identified some measurement instruments, such as the Successful Aging Inventory (SAI; Lee et al., 2017), as being of high psychometric quality.
Objective: To analyse the psychometric characteristics of the SAI, namely the validity and reliability of the measure.
Method: To achieve these objectives, around 100 participants were included in this study. Data collection included the following instruments: a sociodemographic questionnaire, prepared for this purpose; the Portuguese version of the Successful Aging Inventory (SAI; Lee et al., 2017), the object of study in this dissertation; the Portuguese version of the geriatric depression scale (Yesavage et al., 1983; Barreto et al., 2003); and the Portuguese version of the life satisfaction scale (Diener et al., 1985; Neto et al., 1990).
Results: The 110 participants, aged around 75, were predominantly women (63.7%), married/married filing jointly (54.5%) and had a wide range of educational levels. The exploratory factor analysis revealed three factors explaining 61.3% of the total variance. In terms of internal consistency, there were values ranging from α=,737 to α=,798 in the dimensions of the SAI and α=,859 for the overall scale. The analysis of the correlations between the SAI and other measures of similar constructs went in the expected direction.
Conclusion: The results obtained in this study are promising. However, if we consider the original version of the SAI and the associated studies, further research is needed in the field, given the implications for policies and practices in the face of an ageing population

From algebras to objects: generation and composition
This paper addresses objectification, a formal specification technique which inspects the potential for object-orientation of a declarative model and brings the ’implicit objects’ explicit. Criteria for such objectification are formalized and implemented in a runnable prototype tool which embeds Vdm-sl into Vdm++. The paper also includes a quick presentation of a (coinductive) calculus of such generated objects, framed as generalised Moore machines.EC18-399D-CF16 | ANTÓNIO MIGUEL RIBEIRO DOS SANTOS ROSADO DA CRUZN/

Enhanced HPLC method for boar taint quantification
Boar taint is an unpleasant odour found in the carcasses of entire male pigs, resulting from androstenone and skatole accumulation during pubertal development, and impacting pork quality. This study proposes the validation of an adapted chromatographic method for quantifying skatole and androstenone in the pigs’ liquid fat using fluorescence detection. A good chromatographic separation was achieved, with skatole (SKA) and androstenone (AND) elution at 4.4 and 9.9 min., respectively. An external calibration method was applied, with calibration curves correlation coefficient of 0.9999 for both analytes. Detection limit values were 1.53 and 16.02 ng/g for SKA and AND, respectively. SKA recovery was 99.72±2.34 % (2.34 % RSD) and 102.84±1.62 % (1.57 % RSD) for AND. Results showed good precision values (repeatability <2.46 % RSD for SKA, <6.85 % RSD for AND; intermediate precision <2.87 % RSD for SKA, <6.98 % RSD for AND). The method‘s robustness was tested and the values were within the reference ranges. The validation results proved that the adaptation of an existing method resulted in good assessments of robustness, reliability and accuracy.9814-6B05-9C03 | Ricardo Miguel Pereira PintoN/
Monitoring within-individual dose–response relationships in professional soccer players: the importance of fitness level
Purpose: To (1) examine within-individual player dose–response associations between selected training-load measures and changes in aerobic fitness level via submaximal exercise heart rate (HRex%) and (2) measure the relationships between these dose–response associations with basal HRex% (to study the influence of fitness level on dose–response relationship). Methods: During an in-season phase, selected training-load measures including total minutes, total distance, mechanical work (the sum number of accelerations and decelerations > 3m2), high metabolic load distance, and Edwards’ training impulse were collected via Global Positioning System and heart-rate sensors for analyzing accumulated load. A submaximal warm-up test was used repeatedly before and after 9 phases to elicit HRex% and track fitness changes at an individual level. Results: Negative to positive extensive ranges of within-individual associations were found among players for different metrics (r = −.84 to .89). The relationship between pooled HRex% (basal fitness) and dose–response correlations showed inverse very large (r = −.71) and large (r = −.65) values for accumulated weekly minutes and distance. However, moderate values were found for all other measures (r = −.35 to −.42). Conclusions: Individual players show extensive different ranges of dose–response associations with training measures. The dose–response association is influenced by players’ fitness level, and players with lower fitness levels show stronger inverse relationships with accumulated minutes and total distance.9E1A-F9DD-3EB8 | Filipe Manuel ClementeN/
This report was written in the context of the Supervised Teaching Practice (PES) curricular unit of the Master's Degree in Pre-School and Primary School Education at the School of Education of the Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo. The document is organized into three chapters.
The preservation of biodiversity is essential to guarantee the continuity of the ecosystem services that sustain life on Earth and, for this reason, involving children in the natural environment from an early age is crucial to developing attitudes of respect and protection of species.
The study in question was carried out with a group of seven five-year-olds and its main objective was to explore the effectiveness of the activities proposed in promoting these children's connection with nature. Based on the research question “How did the activities in the proposal ‘Connecting with Nature in Kindergarten’ enable seven five-year-olds to connect with nature?”, and in order to respond to the outlined objective, several practical activities were implemented, including the construction of a “Caracotel” (a shelter for snails), the creation of a “Butterfly Garden” and a snail race.
The methodological approach adopted was qualitative with a case study design, using direct observation, children's records and audio and photographic documentation to collect and analyze the data.
During the activities, the children were exposed to important concepts such as the importance of butterflies and other insects as pollinators and the role of ants in balancing ecosystems. These experiences not only contributed to the children's knowledge of the environment, but also sparked a genuine interest and a new perception of the local fauna and flora.
The results showed a significant increase in the children's understanding of animals and their ecological roles. The activities allowed the children to develop a deeper bond with the natural environment, evidenced by their growing curiosity and empathy for living things. Practicing outdoor activities, such as creating habitats and exploring nature directly, proved to be effective in transforming complex concepts into concrete and engaging experiences for the children, involving the acquisition of knowledge, but also of pro-environmental values
Aim: We sought whether physical activity status influence sleep quality in BrC survivors.
Methods: Participants in an ongoing exercise intervention project from Viana do Castelo of exercise for women with BrC (n=34, 54.7±8.0 years) were included in this study [(IPVC Ethics Committee approved (29/A/2022)]. Data from present study was based on cross-sectional assessment. The Internacional Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) was used to classify BrC survivors as inactive or physically active (PA; ≥ 600 METs), after conversion of IPAQ into METs-min/wk. Also, BrC survivors completed the Portuguese version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), validated for cancer patients, which consider the following domains, subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, habitual efficiency, sleep disturbances, medication and daytime dysfunction. Perceived health status and quality of life were assessed by EORTC QLQ-C30. Statistic test for independent samples was used to determine differences between inactive group vs. PA group (significance was set at p≤0,05). Effect size (ES) was calculated to determine the magnitude of difference as: trivial (0,6 – 1,2), large (>1,2 – 2,0) and very large (>2,0 – 4, 0). Spearman correlation was also determined.
Results: 21 (61,76%) of BrC survivors were in post-treatment phase, and 13 (38,23%) were in cancer treatment phase, including chemotherapy (4; 11,76%) or radiotherapy (9, 26,47%). Of all, 25 BrC survivors were classified as PA (1108,89±136,91). Regarding sleep quality, 15 (44,12%) BrC survivors obtained a classification of “good”. Although no statistical meaning, subjective sleep quality and sleep efficiency (p=0,06), PA group showed higher score large ES (ES= 1,00) compared to inactive group. No differences were found for Não health perception or quality of life (p>0,05) with trivial ES (ES=0,8). An inverse weak correlation was observed between total METs-min/wk and daytime dysfunction (p=0,023; r=0,44).
Conclusions: preliminary data suggest that physical activity observed a weak trend towards better sleep quality in the physically active BrC survivors
